Across Nowtv, Disney and Amazon, I pay about £30 a month, I guess. Do I watch more than 8 or so films a month? Probably not at the moment, but the kids do. Would be an experiment I guess.

Watched a video on YouTube about disturbing films, and decided to watch two. Though I don't know how disturbing the two I chose are, but wasn't watching bloody Serbian Film.
Funny Games Remake Had seen both versions before. Not really sure it lends itself well to rewatches. Not sure, but I knew what was going to happen the whole way through. It's a bit strange, especially the lingering on scenes when nothing is happening. But it is decent, and well acted for a US remake. Not disturbing/10
Requiem for a Dream Had not seen this before. I'm sure it's Aronofsky doing a message that has gone over my head, but way too clean and Hollywood a depiction of addicts. They have the most perfect white teeth I've ever seen. Must have been intentional. I guess there's all types of drug addicts as the film does portray with the mum. But not anywhere near as disturbing as YouTube documentarys about drug addicts. Still decent and well acted though.
Mild disturbing/10

Trouble is, even if I did go back to hard copy, the kids are so used to having stuff on tap, we'd have to sub to streaming anyway. My kids think I’m joking when I say anything about cassettes, DVDs etc.

Not sure I’ve ever seen anyone say Requiem for a Dream is too clean and Hollywood before.

My kids are quite happy to watch movies on DVD, but we'd still need streaming for the TV element. That said, free stuff like iPlayer, itvX, all4, FreeVee, etc.. goes a long way. And they mainly want to watch youtube anyway
PS/ Thanks youtube for recommending the Deadpool trailer to my youngest.

Yeah, we still have an extensive dvd and blu ray collection but it's mostly for when travelling (dvds especially). Rarely put one on at home unless it's not available on streaming (mostly retro stuff...).

We don't have an extensive one, but it's usually cheaper to pick up a used DVD than it is to rent a movie for 3 days, so if I know it's something we're going to rewatch then I might grab it that way.
(That said, I keep meaning to rip them all onto Kodi, but I just never really seem to get around to it)

I find Requiem For A Dream weird, I've just never felt it emotionally resonate with me. Except for the grandmother figure, she was tragic.
But I just found the younger characters a bit annoying and it didn't ring entirely true, like I never really bought into the characters as being real.
Still I think the cinematography and score great, and still find it nicely odd that such an iconic piece of music as Lux Aeterna was written by the guy from Pop Will Eat Itself.

Twilight Samurai
Forgot how good this was - such a beautifully understated film.
On topic - had to watch my DVD copy as it's not available to stream anywhere.
8/10

I know it's fun to shit all over blockbuster, but at least you were likely to find anything which had come out in recent years. Such a fucking pain in the arse trying to work out which streaming platform has what so you can watch the bloody thing. justwatch.com

Feel like this is whatever the opposite of recency bias is. Renting a film off Apple or Amazon is far quicker and easier than old rental services like Blockbuster or Lovefilm, and the film is more likely to be there especially on a Saturday night. That coupled with "ffs, I pay for these services and it's not on there" syndrome. Part of the reason I dropped Prime was because everything I wanted to watch is either a standalone rental or pay of a top-up subscription channel.

Even though Justwatch can help you find where films are it still doesn't mean I'll have that particular subscription at that particular time, and I don't watch enough to justify more than one sub at any one time.
Whilst Lovefilm was slower and less convenient in most ways, it did have a very comprehensive catalogue that no *single* streaming service matches.

I've watched it a few times and it's just bloody ridiculous. There's a bit in Hereditary where I gave up and started laughing - if you've seen it, then you know which bit. A Serbian Film is that but over and over. It's the Aristocrats joke of film.

I do think streaming is great, I just wish it wasn't so fractured. And the incremental price increases are not overly justified.. considering they pull stuff. I didn't realise Amazon had changed their price structure, as over the weekend we watched Thelma and Louise, and suddenly there was an advert. My partner was fuming haha.

It's more the getting everything on one service that I think some here were getting at, which the old days of Netflix (mostly in the US) and lovefilm were good for. Lovefilm had it's drawbacks but I saw it as good value for the range. Now the problem is that even if there still is a lovefilm type service (cinemaparidiso noted) there are so many films and TV shows now that just aren't on dvd or bluray because they're made by the individual streaming services. That's completely lost now.

Of course it’s a bummer that the video streaming platforms aren’t as comprehensive as the music ones are. It would be absolutely incredible if there was a Spotify for film. I understand the very specific niche that Lovefilm had has no direct equivalence in the streaming world and I get why people miss that.
There is still a tendency to forget the negatives and romanticise the positives with these things. And I don’t think there is really any advantage that Blockbuster had over the digital equivalent.

Blockbuster was more for Nostalgia. I 'member winning a Nickelodeon competition that included 100 free Blockbuster rentals.
7yr old me rented the Mask for about 98 of those rentals.

Cronenberg was my favourite director at one point. He's got a great varied selection of films, but since Eastern Promises he's been a bit shite. I like a lot of his output, but have a particularly large soft spot for A History of Violence, fucking brilliant film.

I'd hardly call 3 watches of video nasty a "red flag". Bit of a stretch there. Coming across all Tipper Gore.
