Children Of The Corn (2020) - part of the ‘how the fuck did this many get made?’ season, apparently this is the 12th Children Of The Corn movie. I’m assuming the other 11 follow some kind of vague continuity (I’ve only seen the first two) but this is the now obligatory reboot.
It’s absolutely wank. I can’t imagine any of the other movies are much worse. The cult/satanist aspects are gone and now it’s just a monster in a field and the kids go nuts for no real reason. Total lazy hackery from Kurt Wimmer.
2/10

Singles (amazon rental)
Charming romantic comedy drama with a cool setting and fantastic soundtrack. It probably doesn’t need the fourth wall breaks or chapter cards but vignettes were clearly in for alternative movie makers in the early 90s. Even though everyone has quite separate arcs I think that the cast manages to be better than the sum of its parts.
Lots of excellent cameos too, although quite how Chris Cornell is so bad at acting that he makes standing in silence look so unnatural is really something.
I am very happy that discovering Loudermilk has sent me off to revisit this kind of thing after watching so much mediocre sci-fi over the last few years.

Singles is a film I've seen once, close to Reality Bites and that one about a record shop. I can remember bits of each but not all of them.
I DO remember the amazing soundtrack and managing to get Pearl Jam and AiC to produce songs for it (arguably some of their better ones, too) is an achievement.

Ooh, I was weighing up Clerks or Chasing Amy for tomorrow but I don’t think I’ve watched Reality Bites since I was in sixth form

Clerks is generally my favourite for multitude of reasons but it's been about 5 or so years since I watched it.
Chasing Amy is technically more accomplished but I'm not convinced I could suffer it, or Joey Lauren Adams' voice, these days.

Kurt Wimmer of Gun-Kata Equilibrium fame?! Say it ain't so! Small world, Kurt wimmer also directed ‘one tough bastard’ starring Brian bosworth which I reviewed on here a few days ago. Thoroughly recommended 90s action crap with an amazing Bruce Payne as the villain 👍

Had no idea there were so many Children of the Corn films. The original wasn't even particularly good.
Been down an enjoyable Wiki hole reading all about them though. Even Wiki gave up by the time of Children of the Corn: Runaway, which doesn't get the honour of a Wiki page. Lots of big Hollywood stars had early roles in the films though.

I remember one of them (maybe #3?) being good in a batshit insane kind of way. But they're not high on my rewatch list.

There's an extended version knocking about somewhere, which is really just long fade out. Siamese Dream but they made some daft choices on what to include on it. Omitting Drown was one of them.

That's a film I haven't thought about in some time.. 2003.. damn. I can remember playing Enter the Matrix, and renting Equilibrium from the video shop. I don't think I've seen Equilibrium since.

I go back and forth whether that or underworld is the best The Matrix coat tail rider. I watched it relatively recently and while it does suffer from the same problems all the 'we suppressed our emotions' movies do, Bale is absolutely excellent and you do believe he is the hero of his own anime.

Was it The Thirteenth Floor that came out at the same time as The Matrix and was largely ignored, but had vaguely similar themes..

Dark City was a very similar time but I think just before. Late 90s was a hotbed of "what if we're not real and just like, plugged into a computer, maaaaaan?"

Finally saw Poor Things last night. Pretty much excellent, fantastic performances, incredible production design, mad as a box of frogs, about twenty minutes too long, entertaining accents.
If you've ever wanted to see The Incredible Hulk repeatedly scream the c-word at Gwen Stacey, this is the film for you.

Disney+ could probably spin that out into a six-episode miniseries.

I really appreciate Emma Stone's attempt to do interesting films and choices. Her English accent is also pretty decent.

Since everyone keeps saying that Poor Things is just 90% Emma Stone shagging, I feel like it might be a bit awkward to watch in a movie theater full of old ladies. Maybe I'll wait to be able to watch it at home. Without the old ladies.

Yeah a Cronenberg.
Not seen it for decades now, wonder how it holds up.

Dark City is very different to that, how dare you Though they approach it differently they do both have that "like, what is reality, maaan" vibe. Thirteenth Floor was another, though my memories of that are even more vague.
