One tough Bastard (also known as one man’s justice) - 7/10
I needed some more Brian bosworth in my life. This is his next film 5 years after stone cold bombed. Straight to video but top tier straight to video. It also has one of the top five villains of the 90s with Bruce Payne playing a corrupt fbi agent with David Coverdale hair and a nose ring. It’s typical revenge fodder but done very well and the Boz is on fine form. It’s worth watching just for Bruce Payne though, he puts on a master class of over the top acting.

He’s normal in the first Band of Brothers episode, and kinda normal in the Bond film he’s in. Second episode, to be precisely exact.

Only watched the first 2 episodes of that, and I don't think he'd turned up yet. Probably should watch the rest of it. He turns up in the second series. It's such a great show though. Best comedy I've seen in years.

Visted the local civic arts centre and watched these for £5.50 each:
The Holdovers: 7/10. Vintage vibes. Would happily watch this again. Poor Things: 8/10. Strange vibes feelings consternations. Loved the costumes and set design.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Off to see Wonka tomorrow so just watched this in anticipation. It’s at least 25 years since I last saw it. I think it might be the best non-animated children’s film ever made (for classification purposes Paddington is classed as animated). It’s just the right balance of funny and sinister, warming and disturbing. Wilder is a true master.

They missed at trick not getting Carmy from The Bear as young Wonka.

Uncharted
I know, I know, didn't go in expecting much. But I'm a big fan of Naughty Dogs output, U2 is one of my favourite games, and I love a treasure hunt movie having grown up with Indy and Romancing the Stone and sequels. Faux history, implausible mumbo jumbo and quips is fine by me.
It's not terrible, but it's such a missed opportunity. Badly miscast and as a result misses the relationship dynamics that made the games such fun. Nolan North's brief cameo only serves as a reminder of how charmless these characters are by comparison.
Effects are good, and it's all very competently put together as a generic action film. Looked and sounded fantastic via Bravia Core. It just wastes the license and left me slightly sad.

Hero (2002) (on a platform you don't have access to in Europe)
First time watching this in absolute ages.
If you can get over the "oh yes please Mr Autocrat, unite our country under your bloody iron fist, you know what's best for us we're ever so grateful" political stance of it (you used to be cool Zhang Yimou, why'd you have to sell out?!), Hero remains absolutely exceptional. Visually lush, with a great soundtrack and great fight sequences between people who know what they're doing (JET LI AND DONNIE YEN REMATCH).
And you get Maggie Cheung! And Tony Leung! Together again! Oh and I guess Zhang Ziyi is there too.
It loses one point for the boot-licking politics, and another for some slightly dated and unnecessary visual effects. Still brilliant though.

Barbie
Bit disappointed by this. Did not expect her to get upstaged by Rhea Pearlman, for a start. Also felt that Ken had a clearer character arc and the ending sort of came out of nowhere.
On the one hand, if it resonates with people - particularly the two speeches (and the killer line Pearlman gets) then that's good but there's definitely a clearer narrative in there. I also felt like Barbie was floating through it and things happened around her, without it actually being HER that affects the story.
Some of the jokes were brilliant, though.

It's storycraft 101. Give your protagonist a flaw which they must overcome to achieve a clear goal. This character growth is the basis of all drama.
I haven't seen Barbie because I'm a 40 year old man, but it sounds to me like Ken was the flawed character with room for character growth, and was the natural protagonist.

You really should, it's not a film about dolls. I thought it was excellent, if a little too unsubtle (although I understand why).

Dont let being a 40 year old man stop you from watching it - although I’m with Geefe on this one as I found it quite disappointing.

How clearly articulated any message in Barbie was is overridden by the fact it’s brilliantly crafted visually and funny as f*ck.
A seriously enjoyable film that will be regarded as a minor classic IMO.

It wasn’t as funny as I was hoping it would be, but one thing I can’t disagree with - visually it’s as spot on as any film I can think of.

Visually it was fantastic. Everything was real, as far as I could tell and it really did give you a sense of place. Can't fault the look and feel of it.

Hey, you make a film about Barbie and you’d better be catering to the male middle-aged demographic.

I still think it was really good. Not just being funny, visually stunning and having some catchy musical numbers, but because it actually addressed a bunch of issues in a reasonably complex way. It's not subtle about it, but it's also not just "Girl Power!" and manages to not only address the dichotomies of girl power, but also the whole incel thing and young males feeling dis-empowered.
As a 40s man I thought it was great, but it's also very much for younger men and parents.

Let’s get away from this barbie talk.
Double team - 7/10
Van damme and Dennis rodman team up to take down Micky rourke. Incredibly naff but also very entertaining. Seems very big budget and I think this was van dammes swan song before he went straight to dvd. It’s funny how these movies all seemed to have aged better over time, as the camp/naff factor, massive real stunts and over the top acting all combine into pure entertainment.
Van damme is great and he has a training scene with a bath which is weirdly sexual. Add or deduct a point based on how much you want to see this.

I thought Barbie was fucking great. I loved it's self awareness but most of all I got the impression that the cast were just having fun in what they were doing and that's not a regular occurrence to see. I even saw the terrible Spanish dub as I waited for the English version to reach the cinema.

Which was the one with Van Damme starring opposite Van Damme?
