Beverly Hills Cop 2 & 3
Whilst 2 is the better rated on IMDB, I enjoyed the ridiculousness of 2 more.
At the start of 3 I was starting to get fed up of the Axel F theme, which works really well in the first - however, in the third they transition to a brass band version and it works well.
Kinda looking forward to the 4th one now.

The Little Things
Extremely Fincher derivative detective cat and mouse with a cast far better than deserved, but they do lift it and Denzel could make literally any script engaging. I also don’t really mind Jared Leto (on screen at least). It’s not awful but it’s not very good either.
5/10
Death and the Maiden
This is good stuff. Heavyweight performances from Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley and really complex nuanced subject matter. My only slight criticism was it assumed some knowledge of Pinochet’s regime in Chile which at the time of he release was probably quite topical but I had to pause and quickly bone up a bit. Superb film though.

8 Crazy Nights
Yeah, for whatever reason I thought was worth a reappraisal.
I mean when I saw it about 20 years ago I seem to remember getting some enjoyment out of it. It’s a Christmas but not Christmas movie all about redemption across the eight nights of Chanukah. I still think that’s not the worst idea in the world - it’s an inclusive take on the genre. Moreover, I was young and in love and that’s actually where I’m getting the positive memories from.
But today, hoooooo boy. The Adam Sandler funny voices start in the first few minutes. The inevitable product placement kicks in at the ten minute mark (and boy there’s a lot of it). And around about 20 minutes in there’s some language and really nasty jokes that should disqualify this film from ever seeing the light of day again.
But even without that there’s just no getting around how utterly mean spirited it all is. Even for a redemption story it’s too much. Davey Stone’s antics, not limited to theft and bullying, are played for laughs but there are no laughs to be had. He’s just a cunt. He makes Billy Bob Thornton in Bad Santa look like Jimmy Stewart.
I only needed to watch 30 minutes to have had enough. As Sandler films go this is down there with the worst of them.

Bottoms (Prime) Contemporary American take on the classic British sitcom but with more realistic violence replacing the slapstick and 2 lesbians taking the parts of Richie and Eddie. Well maybe not, but there are definite parallels and I can see the 2 lovable losers approving of the girls' hare-brained scheme to get a shag. Plot is as predictable as they come but it raised a chuckle in parts. I'm probably not the right age to really appreciate it, but then I didn't really like Ferris Bueller when I was the right age so maybe I'm just a monster.
If you want to see women get punched in the face by other women (and sometimes men) then this is definitely the film for you.

I was reading the synopsis on Wikipedia and it was all regular teen comedy stuff and then suddenly started going all the other school planned to kill a student, as they do every year, and then lots of people got killed
which seemed rather out of left field. I've spoilered myself now though.

Last Action Hero
What a bizarre film. Haven't seen it since somewhere around 1995/96. It reeeally fucking outstays its welcome and had to do it in 2 sittings.
It's actually pretty smart for the first section and then sags in the middle. The Robert Patrick and Sharon Stone cameos are fantastic.
Chop off about 20-30 mins and it probably gets remembered more fondly. If I recall, it kinda made little impact and got forgotten pretty quickly.

It was a bit of a bomb when it came out iirc. Same approx time as Jurassic Park, so that probably didn’t help

The Tenant (1976)
Polanski’s 1970s output is really exceptional. I hadn’t seen this before but it is very similar thematically to Rosemary’s Baby and Cul-de-sac and like them is a kind of paranoid horror about an apartment and strange behaving neighbours. It’s a very smart and engaging bit of cinema. I really liked it.

All Of Us Strangers (Castle Cinema, Homerton, nicer seats than Curzon Bloomsbury) - 9/10
Moriarty and the hot bloke from Normal People embark on a relationship whilst the former spends his days visiting the ghosts of his deceased parents.
Really affecting. Absolutely heart wrenching in places. There's a lot in here - for me, seeing the parents work through decades of self-repression and open up to their son was particularly poignant. Yeesh.

It really should've been a Best Picture nomination. But there are a lot of great nominations this year tbf. A vintage year imo.

I saw All of Us Strangers earlier in the week and thought it was superb too. Deeply sad, but beautifully done. As you say, some cracking films in the Best Picture category, but I would say it should have been an easy pick as a contender.

I don't think I've seen Andrew Scott play a normal person in anything, he's always been some kind of weirdo or scary psycho. It'd be interesting to see what he's like in normal person mode.

Only watched the first 2 episodes of that, and I don't think he'd turned up yet. Probably should watch the rest of it.

He was fairly normal in 1917 for the 4 lines he has. And he was a pen pusher in Spectre, which was fucking terrible.
