I’ve no idea to be honest but would a lower temperature stop the garlic from burning or crisping?

Not really. At a super low temp you’d get some infusion going on without it burning after a long enough time, sure, but slicing it razor thin doesn’t do anything for that. Just smash it with the back of the knife and finely dice it.

I think it works best when mashed because it’s the juices you want so it’s best to just smash it into a paste. I think I saw it on Jamie once. It’s why roasting it until it’s goo works well, too.

Just started stone cold. Wow this is another level of cheesy 90s action, it’s definitely in so bad it’s good territory

I remember reading a story in history of a Finnish sniper who killed something daft like 300 Nazis. That sounds like a fun film but probs just a Sniper Elite training level. You're probably thinking about Simo Häyhä in the Winter War against the Soviet Union, so it was Russians and probably 500+. Finland was allied with Germany during the Continuation War, and though they had to drive the Nazis out of the country as a condition for peace with the Soviets (that's the general setting of Sisu btw) there wasn't much fighting.
If anyone wants to see a more serious movie about that time I recommend "The Unknown Soldier" (Tuntematon sotilas).
It might have been the same guy that killed a load of Russians after they invaded Finland in the early stages of the war. Amazing really that such a small country like Finland could repulse the Red Army. I guess Stalins purges was a big factor but there were many Finnish heroes. There's the old joke from back when Finland was part of Sweden, that "we will fight to the last Finn". The Soviet invasion was completely idiotic, but that doesn't take away from how smart the Finns were. Russia just yeeted tons of untrained and underequipped troops in, while the Finns for the most part didn't engage and went around them on skis to harass and take out their logistics. So when the Russians tried to push forward they'd end up stranded in the Finnish forests in winter with no fuel or food and not enough equipment for the cold.
Of course the Russians learned from this and would never make the same mistakes again.

Also: Northern Soul: I’ve been listening to the soundtrack all day because it is, obviously, banging but the movie itself is a bit of a wet fart.
Nerd meets cool scene guy, cool scene guy turns out to be a dickhead, drugs, bust up, valuable life lessons. It just kind of grimly bumbles from one music movie 101 cliche to the next without really letting us get to know the characters.
It does accurately capture that it’s grim up north, though.

Ha, I just watched Northern Soul too but liked it more - though mainly for the music and the nostalgia as I’m from the grim north.

I’ve seen it too, remember that it was ok, worth a watch. I also read The History of Northern Soul around the same time. I was too young for that scene but I too am from the grim north so it’s interesting to me
Especially when you stand on the spot where the Wigan Casino’s doors used to open and see that the only recognition of the history is a small blue plaque

Northern Soul made for great music, but that film is pretty poop.
Been ages since I saw it, but definitely no drive for a re-watch.

Rent-A-Pal
Interesting thriller about a lonely care-giver trying to find a match using video dating in the 80s. He gets a little bit too obsessed with a video of Will Wheaton.

Inception
A re-watch with the kids this time, and one of them had their mind blown whilst the other just couldn’t get her head around it. 3rd watch for me over the years and for some reason I found it way more entertaining. I think this might be the last movie in which Tom Hardy was good.

I liked Northern Soul. I thought it did what Quadrophenia did for Mod culture and that’s what I liked abouin.t it. Basically a kitchen sink drama that showed an obviously very stylised vision of what a very niche subculture was like to be
I don’t think it’s as good as Quadrophenia obviously.

Tom Hardy was good in Tinker Tailor. In fact, everyone was good in that but it became less than the sum of its parts. Shout out to Kathy Burke too.
Hardy is also good in Locke, which is a difficult film.
The problem with him is that he is somehow very nothingy. I couldn't tell you his real accent or even when he's being English.

I actually watched Quadrophenia on Friday, having not seen it before. Was surprised at how great it was, and not just the soundtrack. Holds up very well, besides the odd bit of unnecessary racism chucked in.

To be fair, I didn't realise Locke was newer than Inception - I'll give you that one.

InceptionI think this might be the last movie in which Tom Hardy was good. Locke and The Drop were after this. And his career peaked with those CBeebies Bedtime Stories.

The Drop was a weird one. I remember it was watchable but not a lot about it. I don't even remember Gandolfini's part, other than it was his last film.

The Drop wasn't a great movie (I always conflate scenes from it and The Town), but the role suited Hardy. I'm not a big fan of him in Inception - he somehow doesn't suit the plummy private school accent and background... even though he's basically playing Tom Hardy.

The Town is good but such a shit name for a film. The heist scenes are great. The romance angle, less so.

Creep The London Underground one with some scientific lab creep, not the one were the guy from The League is a big creep. Very similar to Midnight Meat Train, but a bit older and much smaller budget. Pretty decent watch though, despite the usual horror tropes of the characters being idiots.

Strange Days (Blu-ray) - 5/5
One of my all-time favourites. They don't make films like this anymore. It would be effectively impossible to make this film now. Kathryn Bigelow directs and James Cameron writes, and the result is a powerhouse of chaotic, vibrant, frenetic energy. It's dark: the central plot revolves around corrupt racist cops entwined with the sadistic rape murders of street women, whilst being recorded on a device which allows playback straight into the brain. These flicks are regularly sold on the black market. It's a cyberpunk neo-noir and feels plugged in to the Blade Runner timeline.
It's interesting that it's set in the extremely near future (it was made in 1994 and set in 1999), and the only sci-fi element is the brain recording tech. The idea that one big technological advancement can have seismic implications on the world is prescient.
Angela Bassett rules really hard.
From the wiki:
Just wild.

harrypalmer I only found out recently that the vocal sample in Fatboy Slim's Right here, right now was taken from Angela Bassett in this. Not sure how I missed that while watching it. I need to give that another watch.

Strange days was brilliant, and as you say quite forward looking in a lot of ways. Strong black female lead that didn't feel shoehorned to be politically correct, she was just great.

The Town is pretty good but I find the films where he plays hard working class people really cringe. It’s obviously a bit of a fetish/fantasy for him.
