Batman Returns could do with being a little tighter and the ending is silly, but I love the style and tone and it’s got some iconic stuff in it.
I also really enjoy Nolan’s take. I like all of them in fact to varying extents including Schumacher’s.
One of the best things about Batman comics is how many different takes on him there are. He might be the best character of them of them all for allowing writers to create a version of him through their lens that feels both distinct and consistent. It’s something that has translated well into the cinematic versions also. There’s a far greater difference between the film versions of Batman than there are with Spider-Man for example.

Quite. I like the variation. I can enjoy, to an extent, the different elements. Though stuff like Batman Inc and the more fantastical JLA stuff doesn't work for me.
I think you hit the nail on the head with the ending being the issue for Returns and pushing it too far. Walken/ Pfeiffer were great and that storyline works. I also think DeVito would work in a separate thing but it's just too messy.

I've seen Batman Returns recently, and I still think it's the best batman movie. It's kinda the Empire Strikes Back to Batman's A New Hope. Batman/ANH is good and has some iconic scenes and an iconic bad guy, but it's also very simple in structure. Batman Returns/ESB takes that and adds more complexity and relationships and depth. I guess that makes Batman Forever the Return of the Jedi, which makes Robin an Ewok.
PS/ That reminds me, the player decided to go directly from Batman, not to Batman Returns but to a 1940s batman serial. Much to the kids amusement.

I like Batman forever a lot. Kilmer is criminally underated in the role.

And what does that make Batman and Robin? We don't talk about Batman and Robin. It's like that alleged 4th Indiana Jones movie.

Batman Returns is easily one of the better Batmans. I don't get the notion that Burton wasn't interested in Batman any more on the basis of this film, the last thing you can lay on this film is that it's half arsed.
I think the weird ending re Shreck is because he was originally intended to become Two Face, but was changed late in production.

It's one of the few good Burton films, geefes comment is typical geefe with no basis behind it.
It's the first Batman film I watched as a kid and I've loved the character ever since.

Ha. Ok. My basis is that I liked it a lot as a kid but didn't like Batman 89 as much. Then in covid, I rewatched both. I liked Batman 89 and didn't feel Batman Returns held up as well.

Well that's just mad. 89 is the one that feels a bit stagey now, and batman can't move. Nicholson is having a good time though, making shit loads of money etc.

I like the Schumacher films. They’re camp and funny and I think we’re probably due a break from all the grimdarkness for a new iteration of Batman sometime soon.

Again I can find some enjoyment in both of them, Forever in particular. The main problem with that one is the villains. Two Face and the Riddler are somehow both retreads of Nicholson’s Joker.

More about it being a film Burton didn't want to do. No, it's pretty well known that it took a lot of arm twisting to get Burton on board for Returns. He didn't have any particular interest in it and seemed happy to go back to making weird little films. Warners had to basically lob everything at both him and Keaton to get them on board. Burton was given almost free reign, which is why we end up with this chaotic clusterfuck. Watching it, it just feels like he's half making a film that appeals to his sensibilities and half seeing what he can get away with. Does it have its positives? Absolutely. It attempts something new, the Walken/ Pfeiffer storyline works well and the plot is kinda decent. But it's also just fucking insane with the penguins and the giant rubber duck and the clowns. It would have been better if the studio had said "maybe keep to one narrative thread, mate" but then it wouldn't have been made.

He had lots of interest in it, just wanted creative control to make the film he wanted so not really half arsing it. Felt the studio got too involved in the first. So if anything he was much more invested in Returns.

If I remember correctly he was supposed to make a third, but Returns was marketed as a kid's film by WB and there was a huge backlash from unhappy parents in the US. McDonald's had a range of Happy Meal toys made to promote it, but ultimately refused to run the promotion due to the outcry surrounding the film.

Didn't get on with the monsters at all. Still, at least they were slightly more entertaining than anything else.

WotW starts well then gets steadily worse I thought, seems the curse of recent adaptations, the BBC version had a good first episode then turned awful.

The End We Start From - something about the title of this just will not stick with me. Fortunately, the rest of the fun is pretty good. Very low key story of a mother travelling with her newly born child, following extreme flooding in London. Gives a good sense of the chaos that would follow such events, even though it mostly happens off screen. Nothing too showy, but honestly got a bit choked by the end.
