It's absolutely batshit. Just fucking insane. 10/10 documentary production.

Still mulling over Saltburn after just finishing it, overall thought it was a very good film and it built up the tension well, and the ending did land for me. Have spent a while reading what the director was intending, the themes were generally clear but unlike Promising Young Woman I wasn't sure what the main point was she was trying to get across.
*That* particular scene will stay in my mind for a long time, but it was very well done and conveyed everything the character was going through.

Poor Things
If you thought Yorgos Lanthimos's last film The Favourite was on the odd side well his latest is even more fucking nuts than that one.
A combination of Frankenstein/Doctor Moreau and Wes Andersonish weird with a story that you can't really explain without sounding a bit mental. It's a steam punk world where Emma Stone's Bella lives with Willem Defoe's God(win) a famous surgeon who was seriously fucked up by his Dad as a child, a student of God, Max (Ramy Youssef) is hired to observe the actions of Bella as she slowly develops from a childlike idiot into something approaching a normal person.
It's a very, very, very weird film, it's very funny too as well as being bloody horrible at times.
It's a rare 18 as well, almost certainly down to the huge amount of shagging rather the tons of swearing. If you want to see Emma Stone in the nude a lot this could be for you but it's most definitely not a film for everyone. Certainly not something to watch with your Granny.
I enjoyed it and I'll probably be thinking about it for a while.

Under siege 2 - 6.5/10
I’d never actually seen this before, so it was a pleasant surprise. It’s also very big budget and I thought it was going to be straight to dvd fodder. Segal is pretty much unbearable in this one, it’s obvious he thinks he has now made it as a AAA action star and has far too much sway on his character and the script. He’s basically superman with awful quips. If this had Stallone, Willis, Gibson etc. in it it would be a solid 8. The villains are all good too, just not the same level as Busey and Jones. Gutted it had no throat rip.
Saying all that it’s a lot better than it’s reputation and never dull👍

Okay I need your help fellow font geekers. You may have noticed I have been trying to relive my youth and have been watching 80s'/90's action classics I've not seen for 20 years. Point Break.

Past Lives 10
A Korean love story, that is just subtle and beautifully moving. It tells the tale of two youngsters who meet in later life when their lives are in a different place. It’s a poignant love story and the story of an immigrant too. I can’t recommend it enough. It’s slow and measured in all the right ways.

Vertical limit - 7/10
Amazing scenery, cinematography and stunt work. O donnell is okay, Paxton is brilliant. So many edge of your seat hanging off cliff moments you start to roll your eyes, but it is a very well made film. The drama is serviceable, the action is good.
It’s no cliffhanger or Everest but still a good watch.

I’ve recently acquired two nights a week where I can have the big telly to myself and have decided to dedicate one of these to watching a film the other half won’t.
This week’s - Fast and Furious 8 or whatever it’s called.
Haven’t seen the last three. This was almost too fast, too furious. Some good comedic turns like Statham with the baby and the little Helen Mirren cameo (seriously a film this objectively bad doesn’t deserve the cast it has). (I’m talking Mirren and Kurt Russell not Statham)(Although I do enjoy The Stath in action).
Alright I know it’s wrong and they are crap but these films are just perfect escapist dribble.
7.5/10. Did not match the better films in the serious but loads of fun.

I tried to get over myself and finished Saltburn and I still didn't really like it. Admittedly, I was not watching it blind and had the shit spoiled out of it for me but I thought it was quite one gear and obvious. Like the twist wasn't really a twist and when the capers started, it wasn't really that interesting. I dunno, I think I was set against it initially because I just do not like Keoghan but I found the film itself to be a bit of a drag. Looked nice, though.
Apparently, Timotheeeee Chalamet was the front runner for the main role (because he is so hot right now), so it would have been an American infiltrating high society which I think would have worked better, maybe.
6/10

Spoilers ahead, maybe.
Yeah, I watched it last night and feel basically the same. It was ok. The main thing that ruined it for me is it all just felt extremely implausible and the main character wasn't very convincing as anything other than a huge weirdo. Certainly not the criminal mastermind he's kind of meant to be.
Perhaps that was intentional, going with the exaggerated, surreal dreamlike tone, but it didn't work for me.

I think the Timothee Chalamat / US angle would have been an extra layer the film didn’t need. It would also have led to a flurry of misunderstandings and confused distortions as US Youtubers tried to make him a class hero and nothing else.

I can see Tim for the Felix role, but not Oliver. He needed to be unconventionally looking, in my eyes.

In all seriousness, I think Keoghan was fine in the role. It wouldn't have worked with a more conventionally attractive actor imo. I guess my issue with the character is that I never really know what his deal or motivation is. That's quite a lot of work to go through for what he gets at the end, and he does it for... reasons? He's just a social climber? Did he love the rich guy? Does it matter?
I guess Ripley (the obvious parallel) doesn't have much motivation either aside from being a sociopath, but Ripley didn't get a weird backstory with loving parents. He doesn't really need a backstory!

Also, the class politics of this are weird to me, given that the director went to Oxford too.

I'm probably the only person who hated the 4:3 aspect ratio. I can't understand why somebody would try and make a film look like a 1990s TV show...

It read like someone who wasn't QUITE in those circles but really wanted to be and was looked down on, so has written this film. Needless to say, she had the last laugh.

It actually made being extremely rich old money more attractive to me. I'd have loved Felix's life when I was younger and his dads life now. It basically glorified being stinking rich. I'm not sure that's what she was going for...

I found it less noticeable than in Justice League Shitty Cut. I'm still not sure I understand what it ADDS vs what it takes away (and yes, I've read the internet).

Ok, but if she wanted Oliver the class hero to take those rich assholes down a peg, maybe she shouldn't have made him such a creepy weirdo! The message feels really confused to me. Hey look at these rich pricks, watch as they get destroyed by an evil poor person!
