Next you'll see be saying that Saltburn is better than Weird Science you animal! Weird science is fucking awful. It was great when 12 year old me watched it on telly one night. But good Lord, no. It's very of its time. That's the joke.gif

Yeah I feel like the moan was really that slightly shitty mainstream action films like John Wick 15 are longer than the equivalent shitty sequel would have been in the 80s. Which is probably true.

It's silly to talk about length of movies in general. How long a movie can be depends on the material.

A Trip to the Moon is less than twenty minutes long, and they go all the way to the fucking moon!

That's the joke.gif I think of that era with those classic teen movies, Risky Business, Weird Science, Class, Ferris Bueller etc, Weird Science really is pretty dire these days, the rest are still great.

I don’t have time to sit and watch a film these days, I just watch watch tv series the day they drop on Netflix

Who needs to watch a movie when they can just skimread the plot summary on Wikipedia.
This is obviously assuming people can read.

Weird Science is clearly a very, very stupid film but it's one I still enjoy. And I've not worn a bra on my head for some time.

Watched Chitty Chitty Bang Bang over Christmas and was shocked to discover that it is almost 2 1/2 hours long.
But, yes, I think it is a misnomer that films are longer now (which seems to be backed up by data). Even modern comic book films are about the same length as the 1978 Superman film's 2 hours 20.
It might be that the 80s did have shorter films and I wouldn't be surprised if that decade was a blip on the average film length, making those that grew up around then think films are longer. You had a lot of cheaply made films getting pushed for the home video market, likely with short runtimes to keep costs down and focus on quantity instead of quality, as well as being made by small teams of people. You also had a shift towards younger audiences and they may have thought it best to keep runtimes shorter for an expected lower attention span of kids and teenagers (films still predominantly target that market, but don't seem to worry about that so much). The dawn of the multiplex would also have encouraged studios to keep runtimes down to be able to cram in more showings across multiple screens
The longer runtimes we have now are just readjusting back to what it was like pre-80s and 90s.

They had intermissions in the olden days, bring them back and people will be happy for long films.
Cinemas won't be happy though, while they'll sell more concession stand items they won't be able to pack in so many screenings.

Wonka - 9/10
Took the kids to see it. We all loved it. It’s up there with Paddington 1 and 2 as one of the greatest modern kids movies. Wish it had more hugh grant though.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang also feels long because it’s absolutely shite. The opening credits with the stock racing footage are six fucking minutes long.
Man, I *hate* that movie.

Really enjoyed Rebel Moon (Netflix). Despite all of its flaws.
I don't have my ear to the ground on whats hot and what is hot too much so not sure if it's been well received or widely known about. I only heard about it from some guys at work.
Anyway, give it a go? Western Sci-Fi Star Warsy nonsense with terrible acting and Zak Snyder slllooowwww mooooo what's not to love.

The Lodge
Slow, but well crafted horror. I basically echo what everyone else said.
BUT WHY ARE THESE PEOPLE SPENDING CHRISTMAS IN A CREEPY SPOOKY SCARY DEATH HOUSE???
7/10
I wonder why it wasn’t really picked up on release? Maybe Hereditary stole its thunder?

Leave the world behind - 7/10
Pretty enjoyable stuff. Loses points for the absolutely cringeworthy bit of dancing from Roberts. Had to stop and check if the boy was John Travolta's son at one point.

Watching Crystal Skull again. Can’t believe John Hurt is actually in it. It is not that bad, and far more “indy” than I remember. The ending is going to suck though, if memory serves.

Cinemas won't be happy though, while they'll sell more concession stand items they won't be able to pack in so many screenings. This is the part of the conundrum that I don't quite get, how come films haven't got *shorter*? Given how studios have had to change their model to front load profits into the first opening weeks, you'd think they'd want films to be shorter to get more screenings in a day. Maybe there's just enough multiplexes everywhere now they don't need to worry about it anymore.

My other half has proposed we find a top 100 films list and try to watch all of them, which is pretty cool given how she's rarely that into movies. Can anyone recommend a good list?

My lad has a scratch off poster thingy of top100 on his wall. It’s pretty good. So maybe get one of them scratch off poster jobs.

That's a pretty good idea imo. Movie roulette with no backsies.
And speaking of top 100, watched The Shawshank Redemption (again) with the eldest. 10/10. It's just the perfect film, full of wonderful scenes. It's just amazing.

X - The terrible Channel 4 app
God I hate unskippable ads during tense films.
I enjoyed this. Very grindy. Very gory. Boobs but also willies. Steals a sight gag from Bottom.
If they did an RE7 film like this I’d be cool with it.
8/10

Twas the 60s to be fair, and said by a guy who'd been in the place since the 20s. I doubt his sartorial priorities were in the right place.
