Triangle of Sadness
White Lotus and The Menu meets Below Deck. Some proper belly laughs and while it's not subtle it's always funny. Great cast too.

In the 2000s I tried to complete the IMDB Top 250 list. Itās not as onerous as it sounds as if youāre a certain vintage youāve already seen the older stuff on ITV on Sunday afternoon and caught most other stuff as it came out but because it was pre-streaming there were a handful of movies I just couldnāt find. I might actually try and finally finish it.
But, yeah, you could do worse than that. Itās a decent mix of older classics and popular modern stuff.

I got that poster. Me and the missus agreed to adhere to watching all of it.
About two weeks later Baby Shark arrived. Movies became an unobtainable dream for so long. We just started watching them again, and even then The Lodge was a two-part event. (At 130 minutes)

I don't think its tends to shift much. You get the odd big release that goes straight in but the chances are you've seen it anyway.

A shot in the dark
Seen it many years ago, I wanted to watch it again as i didn't remember almost anything.
It's a crescendo for sure, starts a bit slow but it's a riot by the end. Peter Sellers is great of course, but if you ask me, Herbert Lom steals the scene everytime he appears.

Letterboxd has loads of really good lists to work your way through. Thatās really the best thing about it imo.

The Creator
Was really excited for this one and was disappointed to hear it got mixed reviews. Firstly it is visually stunning and the first 1/3 is pretty solid. It then just falls away and the plot is pretty bad. The writing is terrible and they really missed a good opportunity to make a classic.
Ironically they probably should have got chatgpt to write the plot. I have no doubt it would have been better.

Tetris 7/10
I knew pretty much nothing about the story behind this going in, apart from Alexey Pajitnov obviously getting shafted out of royalties due to communism. The Maxwell involvement was a new one to me. Well acted and a fascinating story. Egerton was surprisingly great seeing as I've only remembered him from the Kingsman films previously.

The Fabelmans 9/10
Not the sort of film I get to see much these days. Loved it though.

No One Will Save You
Not often you have a modern film with almost no dialogue. Kaitlyn Dever is excellent in the role (imo she should of been Ellie in the TLOU tv show) You can say the film has been done before as its home invasion with roswell style grey Aliens but its done so well. on disney plus in the UK

Might suggest The Fablemans for tonight's viewing. It's tricky at the moment as the eldest just wants to watch things he knows he shouldn't (15s, mostly with horror basically).

I always find Spielberg films strange. Outside of his obvious blockbusters I rarely want to watch them but then I really like them when I do. Thereās little thatās flashy about a lot of his direction but it still feels so different to nearly all other directors.

BFI has a very eclectic top 100 on their website (think it is the Sight and Sound one). From all sorts of eras and plenty of foreign language films there. Looks like a very good list to me, but perhaps a little avant garde for some tastes. The AFI has one too, which looks to be a little more mainstream (think it may only have films from the US).

When people talk about the magic of cinema my head goes straight to Spielberg. He understands storytelling in such a pure and joyous way and has complete mastery of his craft. He tips into schmaltz a bit sometimes but thereās room for that.
He was really my route into loving film when I was a kid and itās been great seeing my own kids fall equally in love with him. If I had to pick a GOAT I think pound for pound he takes it.

He is, barring a few misfires like Hook, astonishingly consistent. I didn't like BFG but that's probably because the cartoon version exists.
But the dude still manages to push stuff out like Bridge of Spies like it's nothing. Other directors would consider that a high watermark and for him it's just par.

I think the only people who didn't like Hook were critics and Spielberg himself. Bangarang user geefe.

Saw it as a kid. It was shite. I vividly remember it getting turned off in favour of Labyrinth.

I was the wrong age at the time so I donāt have a nostalgic relationship with it and objectively itās long and a bit clunky. Also I never feel Robin Williams is really on form in it. Even once he goes āfull Panā itās not him at his manic best. Iām guessing he wasnāt given room to improvise which is where he really shines. Hoffman totally steals the show and is by far the highlight.

It's definitely a good possibility, I've always found the top part of the imdb list to swing very dad film/bro movie types, but it's surprisingly stable for such a online entity that's been around forever. Not sure if I can convince her to up it to 250 films though.

How cool is Rufio though. With the skateboard. Definitely not as cool as the BMX kids in ET. Thatās a good point of comparison of where Hook fails. Itās just trying too hard to be magical and charming where ET pulls off both by the bucketful but with a much lighter touch. I see Hook is sitting on a measly 29% on RT so itās definitely fairly widely considered a bit of a dud.

Always loved it as a kid but haven't watched it since. Can remember it scene for scene so must have watched it a lot. Might watch it with my daughter to see egos it holds up.

My most unfavourite Spielberg movie is probably Ready Player One. It just feels like a waste of his talents, like any old hack could have done a CGI version of a 45 year olds toy drawer.

Saw it at the cinema but I have no memory of whether I liked it or not. I only really remember the bit at the start with the old woman.
