Having a chat with a mate and it seems films have actually gotten about 30 mins longer, on average, compared to the 80s.
Runtime for 2022 average is 140 mins
1981 was 110 mins.
Absolutely bullshit. More content does not mean more good.

I think people are probably less concerned with whether anyone would watch it at the cinema even though I’m actually far more time sensitive when watching things at home.

Took me a minute to google and find out that’s bollocks. towardsdatascience.com/are-new-movies-longer-than-they-were-10hh20-50-year-ago-a35356b2ca5bConclusion for the TLDRs In conclusion, our intuition was wrong. There is no trend in the movies runtime. The differences are too small to be noticed. We can say that for the last 60 years movies on average have the same length. No matter what criteria we take into account, the result is the same. Thanks for the read! Now we can go back to watching movies!

I have noticed that the numbers of people moaning about runtimes has increased.

I think, as above, we may just be noticing it more as the way we consume them changes. Having access to everything, all at once we don’t make ‘movie time’ anymore, we chuck them on as content like we would an episode of friends so run times matters more.
I dunno, I can see why it would feel like it as length is surprisingly high on my list of priorities when I’m looking for something to just stick on. I will make time to watch a long movie I know will be good but I wouldn’t necessarily take a punt on a random pick running excessively long.

If we go back far enough you could say films are now shorter. In the 1920s films were regularly 150+ minutes.

I think being able to see the little runtime bar on your streaming service probably has an impact on your perception of the runtime. In a cinema you don't have that distraction and can (ideally) just focus on watching the movie.

I've seen the data about movies not getting longer before, but I still don't really believe it. There have always been long movies of course, and it totally depends how you break it down, but I've been watching a bunch of classic 80s/90s movies recently and it's noticeable that most of them are 20-30 minutes shorter than the modern ones I've been watching in the cinema.
It probably depends a lot on the type of movie, but I feel like big action movies in particular have gotten longer.

I wanted John Wick 4 to go for 5 hours. He could have fallen down those stairs at least a few more times.

Also why are we holding up 80s cinema as the pinnacle to aspire to?
Saltburn is better than Under Siege despite the shorter runtime.

Cinemagoing habits were completely different in the first half of the 20th century. People would just come and go as they please. A lot of the audience were just killing time before the next tram. You’d have huge epics that people would watch over a number of visits.
Gone with the Wind is so long it feels like it plays out in real time. It’s a Xmas TV schedulers dream as it’s pretty much the only thing they have to slot in on that day.

Maybe they just seem longer because back in the ‘80s we were young and had all the time in the world, whereas now we can sense the breath of the reaper on our necks so we feel the passing of each moment more keenly?

Yup. Hopefully someone will come along in a minute to break the tension with review of a film we’ve all seen a thousand times.

The Equalizer 2
Denzel goes on a main quest to avenge the death of someone close to him, but has a few side missions to take care of too. There's absolutely zero surprises in the plot, there are bad people and Denzel kills them.
Pedro Pascal is in it.
Uhhh... yeah, it's fine really. I liked the first one more.

Oh, and the runtime is a svelte 121 minutes.

I wonder if it's because the editing of modern movies, especially action, tends to be much faster. So even if the movies are the same length as the ones from the 80s or 90s, they feel longer.
(just thinking aloud using my purely cognitive biases)

There could be something about films of specific genres being longer, potentially. I can't be arsed to find out. It's possible it's more about our attention spans and genre fatigue that makes movies feel far too long now.
