Sakra (Prime video) - Donnie Yen produces and directs a 60 year old Donnie Yen as a 30 year old Kung Fu master in this tale of murder, mystery and Kung Fu Mastery. Its actually pretty good. Donnie kicks a lot of arse, the effects aren't bad and the story is interesting enough.
It has a lot of the asian cinema quirks in that the plot tends to jump around all over the place and things happen absolutely inexplicably and 'just are', which you are either on board with or you aren't. One minute he is being left as a baby, the next he is the leader of the biggest criminal gang in china and has learned the highest form of Kung Fu in Shaolin Temple off screen and is the best in the world at it.
7/10

Remember Terminal Velocity well, went to the cinema to see it, I even remember getting half price tickets via a deal at the local Quaser Laser Tag arena. It was one of the two big skydiving flicks that year, the other being Drop Zone.
It wasn't fit to tie Drop Zone's shoelaces quite frankly, but it had it's charms.

I remember thinking Drop Zone was crap. But this is all based on very old memories.
Terminal Velocity had a really cool opening sequence, until it morphed into Charlie Sheen's butt. Plus it had Natasha Kinski and the cool bit with the sports car. Drop Zone I remember nothing about, except it had Wesley Snipes and wasn't as good as Terminal Velocity.
I did watch Blade recently and that's still ace. Top Snipes.

Ooh, I remember wanting to watching that metalhead film when it came out. Thanks for the reminder. Same, it sank without a trace and never appears on streaming. Ended up buying it on bluray from Fopp! But you can rent it on prime.

Under Siege (Netflix) - 4/5
Still absolutely bangs.
The best Die Hard clone. Not one, but two insane villains in Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey. I’m not sure why the latter has to dress up as a woman but it feels essential.
I can’t decide if Seagal adds or detracts from the whole thing but it’s his best film. Erika Elenak acts him off the screen.
I must have seen it a million times in tv but I don’t remember the throat rip. The knife fight at the end is hilarious. I miss films like this. Ridiculous but really well made.

Ended up seeing Wonka for a second time in less than a week, as a friend wanted to see it. Was lovely the second time too.

Sisu
Some nazis try to steal an old mans gold and shoot his dog. Old man who should have died within 30 seconds spends the next however long the film is denazifying his little corner of the world.
Amusing enough if ypu like that sort of thing.

Ridiculous but really well made. I was thinking that one wouldn't hold up so well. Though I remember being very excited to go watch it at the time. Possibly due to being a teenager and Erika Elenak. I don't remember a throat rip, but maybe it got edited out of the TV versions. Better than Speed?

I think it’s better than Speed, but haven’t seen that in a while.
It definitely follows the Die Hard blueprint more closely.

Freelance - Stop me if you've heard this one before but..... Ex-Special Forces guy now living as a suburban dad with a mini van gets drawn back into a wacky caper where he has to run about with guns and shoot people, but this time its set in Just Cause!
I think this is like the 10th incarnation of this movie I've watched in the last few years but this one particularly feels like it was written by chatGPT. The characters in particular don't feel like they were written something non-human. Its genuinely jarring, like the AI doesn't really understand that one random detail doesn't make a back story or motivation. Its so odd.
Would be a 3/10 but Alison Brie raises it to a 4. Its genuinely a delight/mystery to see her slumming it but she got a bag plus a holiday to wherever they filmed this so fair play.

Alison Brie sharing* top billing with John Cena genuinely depresses me.
*obviously she got paid less because patriarchy.

I'm all for a bit of naff Seagal, especially Under Siege, our VHS copy was suspiciously worn out near the birthday cake scene. I even really like the sequel, but...
...better than Speed?
Terminal Velocity better than Cliffhanger?
This thread is going all out for it's current namesake the last couple of pages!

Its why I watched it. Ive never not liked her in anything, even that 'one for her' movie where she is just annoying for 90 minutes before getting kidnapped by Aliens

Terminal Velocity better than Cliffhanger? This thread is going all out for it's current namesake the last couple of pages! Obviously I need to rewatch Speed, but I dont really consider it a proper Die Hard clone, in the same way that Die Hard 3 isnt really a Die Hard clone! Speed evolved the concept into kind of it's own thing (which probably influenced Die Hard 3) whereas Under Siege is pretty close to the Die Hard blueprint, beat for beat. I dunno, I've always loved Under Siege, I would even go so far as to say that if in some parallel universe, Bruce Willis was in Under Siege and Seagal was in Die Hard, Under Siege would be considered the better film. What a tangled web we weave, from the Die Hard 3 wiki:

It is a cracker. Watched it with the eldest last year, he loved it. I don't think I've ever seen the sequel though...

Speed is great! Under Siege is also great! I even like Under Siege 2.
This was tho in my days of innocence before I realized Steven Seagal was a terrible actor, although it isn't as obvious until later films. I also enjoyed the one where he died quite unexpectedly quite near the start of a film! Was a bit of an early Sean Bean GoT moment.

Under Siege 2 is better than Speed 2.
To clarify, I'm not saying Under Siege is a better film than Speed, I'm saying it's a better Die Hard ripoff than Speed, which I don't consider to be a direct ripoff, although influenced by. It was important that I get that cleared up.

The Creator, the sci-fi reboot of The Golden Child I didn’t ask for and I’m not sure I wanted 6/10 I'm glad I'm not the only one who wasn't impressed by The Creator. I thought films like Terminator 2, Ex Machina, and Her all explored our relationship with AI more successfully, with a far stronger human-machine at the centre of the film. Despite the brilliant actress playing The Child in The Creator, I felt it's central relationship fell flat, and the film ultimately boiled down to people running around shooting at each other for 2 hours, which I found boring.

What's John David Washington like in it? I've not seen him be good in a single thing.
