Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Felt more like an Uncharted movie than the Uncharted movie did. Waller-bridge brings some Chloe-esque energy to the proceedings while Indy tries not to avoid breaking a hip. Was mostly good fun but way longer than it needed to be and somehow managed to have a climax even more ridiculous than the Crystal Skull.
6/10 I think I kinda got the same feeling during the train sequence. And then again during the tuk-tuk chase. The movie didn't need to be that long, because those scenes didn't need to be that long.

They really, really didn't. What I found more frustrating was that it really didn't need to exist, the inclusion of Antonio Banderas for all of 5 minutes really gives flesh to this idea. For all of the issues I have with Crystal Skull it at least gave a definitive ending for the character.

I saw Dial of Destiny maybe two months ago, and I literally can’t remember anything about it. Not one scene. Say what you like about the monkey chase in 4 but at least I have a memory of it.

I suppose you could say that at least Crystal Skull brought out an emotional reaction from you, case in point the ridiculous CGI swinging scene. I can vaguely recall the set pieces in DoD but just fuzzy outlines nothing really concrete that I can call back. Shit, that's quite damning.
No wait I distinctly remember the kid in DoD killing a man by handcuffing the giant henchman underwater. That was grim.

Crystal Skull is still Spielberg. Ok, it’s the shitty phoned in sequel version of Spielberg, but he still knows what he’s doing and there is as a result the occasional little micro moment of cinematic magic.

Just got in from Godzilla Minus One. That was bloody brilliant! Yeah, watched this a week or two back. Just great. I'll probably get slaughtered for this but I also watched Oppenheimer recently and found it fairly odd. I just couldn't get passed the way it's shot and cut. Every 10-15 minutes does the 'serious music over mini montage' type thing. It doesn't flow, it just jumps from scene to scene. Interspersed with intense-music bits. It got tiring. Visually impressive, great subject, but it was trying way too hard. I usually don't mind long, cerebral films but this was a bit crud. Maybe needs a rewatch.

Oppenheimer sometimes fell victim to its own need to shoehorn famous names/events/dates every ten minutes, usually with a dramatic pause right before whenever it happened. Still, I very much liked it, but I thought the Barbie side of the equation was more fun. Even if that movie also had its fair share of issues (mainly the nonsensical plot).

I enjoyed Dial of Destiny well enough, but good god the action scenes did all go on twice as long as they needed to. Plus there was a distinct lack of actual tomb raiding type stuff. And stuff like Antonio Banderas was entirely pointless. I can only assume he was mates with someone on the movie and said something like 'you know, I've always wanted to be in an Indiana Jones movie...'
Talking of unnecessary sequels:
Toy Story 4 (iPlayer)
This was a bit rubbish. Not unwatchable, but not a patch on the first 3. There were a few nice individual scenes, but the whole thing was really unfocused and meandering and just felt like kinda a mess. It kept getting distracted and going off in different directions.
I liked the idea of a mad-max style Bo-Peep, but it didn't really follow through with it, or with anything else really. Buzz was pretty much sidelined, so you didn't get the usual Woody-Buzz banter. And all the other regulars basically weren't in it, shoved aside for bland characters like Forky, the annoying stuffed toy duo and Evel Knievel. None of whom really got enough time to make much of an impression.

Crystal Skull is alright until it gets to South America when it just commits suicide. The first half/two thirds are better than anything in dial of destiny.
I think ‘feels like a Spielberg movie’ is important, as important as pretty much anything in them and one of many reasons DoD is such a piece of shit. I have Covid (boo) and have watched a few Spielberg movies over the last few days and there is a real unmistakable quality to them.
Like Close Encounters. You could watch that and be able to tell who directed it without being told. It’s almost dreamlike.

There was a Tom Hanks triple bill on Channel 5 today. Money Pit still has me in stitches.
I’d never watched You’ve Got Mail before, and this was no exception as I moved on to do some chores about fifteen minutes in. It was just funny seeing Greg Kinnear, Dave Chappelle and Steve Zahn all so fresh faced in early roles. And I feel like I needed to be reminded about how cute Meg Ryan was once upon a time.

Speaking of actors that have changed, what the fuck has Beverley D'Angelo done to herself? Wouldn't have recognised her in Violent Night if it wasn't for the voice.

Toy Story 4 wasn’t as essential as the previous trilogy, but I’m glad it exists. If only to close out Woody’s story and give him a retirement. Or even to just give some kind of comfort in the knowledge that forgotten toys don’t all end up in the incinerator from Toy Story 3. It’s very much the empty nest chapter (or epilogue) of the series.
But you’re right, we don’t need any more.

I quite enjoyed the ending of the latest Indy, as a spectacle. It looked pretty cool and was a fun idea. The rest of it, not so much. PWB brought nothing to proceedings, it was depressing enough seeing old Ford last time round, and the sheer amount of CGI this time round was equally so.

Toy Story 4 and Dial of Destiny have the exact same problem, they're films that really don't need to exist. TS3 finished in such a good place to call it a day, the toys had a new home and the story was done. Same with Indy, that really didn't need to go past 3 films either but it had two more that really added nothing, in the case of Crystal Skull it made money which is something DoD didn't.
I guess we can all look forward to more flogging of the dead horse with Toy Story 5, DoD's failure let alone Harrison Ford's age means that's the last time we'll see that version of Indy.

I just think it's sad that so many actors feel they have to go under the knife as they get older. I get that Hollywood creates an (unrealistic) expectation but be more Judi imo.

They can’t win whatever they do really. “Ageing gracefully” like Judi Dench or Helen Mirren really means having just enough surgery to not look offensively old without going so far as it to be obvious, staying in ridiculously good shape for your age and being blessed with genetics.

I'd really like Disney to produce a AAA hand drawn animation again. And not some straight to video affair. Surely there's a market for 2D traditional stuff again now after all this time, with the nostalgia and novelty of it?

Everyone I know who has seen wish (my wife and daughter) has said it would have been better as a more traditional hand drawn movie.
And of all the movies that came out when she was growing up, Princess and The Frog is still her fave.

Yeah, that’s the sad bit. Nobody went to go see The Princess and Frog, but it was much better than Tangled, which made all the money.

I’m less sure it would be financially viable these days.

Surely Princess and the Frog is a shoe-in for a live action remake?

I wouldn’t be surprised if they logistically couldn’t given their direction of travel these last few years. I can’t imagine their hand drawn animation department is well staffed these days.
Which is a shame. One of the coolest things we did when we went to Disney was an animation workshop where an animator does a workshop on how to draw Disney characters. Ironically, the ones we did were from zootopia, a very 3D movie.

Tron
Somehow I never watched this until now. A relic from a time when cyberspace was still a new concept... one that looked like a flat-shaded version of Battlezone. I didn't mind this romanticized take on computer programs, even if it's basically a kids movie with a neon coat of paint - also one without especially engaging or fun action.
6/10
I still prefer the System Shock take on cyberspace and malevolent computers. Incidentally, you might say that game takes a few visual cues from Tron.
Anyway, it's interesting how between the 80's and the 90's, people had all sorts of ideas of what computers would be like, but they all boiled down to "if we let computers run things, we're screwed". I wonder what a subject like that would look like today.
.... also, now I want to try Tron 2.0.

Probably a movie where a teenage boy is the hero and his partner/love interest is a big titted AI from Midjourney.
