Poor Things
The latest from FG-favourite director Yorgos Lanthimos, about Emma Stone with a baby brain and her various sexual escapades. Willem Dafoe is in it as a Frankenstein, and Mark Ruffalo is a foppish horny dandy.
Weirdly arousing.

I remember the short of Mama. Don’t think I ever saw the film based on it. But the short was very memorable. The short is basically the best bit and I think it's better than the one in the film from memory

Inspired by treating myself to the new game, OG Robocop. My favourite film of the 80s and certainly IMO the best action film of the 80s. Not only is the action and violence and gadget stuff just perfectly done but it’s a chilling prediction of what has basically happened to the world. Some chilling and sad bits, lots of funny bits with pitch perfect satire. Don’t think I got the Frankenstein parallels as a kid either. 15/10. . How is the game?

Just back from Wonka. Thought it was a delight throughout. Some good tunes (courtesy of The Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon) and does a surprisingly good job of capturing the tone of Roald Dahl's stories. I expect this will become a favourite for lots of families, just like Paul King's Paddington films.

Nails the atmosphere in certain ways but not others. The acting is pretty crap, but the storyline so far has been half decent. The shooting is half amazing and half meh. It’s also surprisingly slow paced - there’s a lot of talking and detective work - think the Arkham games maybe. A 6.5 which you can elevate to an 8 if you really like the world.

Home Alone - Me and my Mam spent Christmas with my sister’s family. On Boxing Day, they were looking for a film for the six of us too watch. Home Alone was mentioned, and I said that I had never watched it. I wish that was still the case. It might have cut the mustard back then, but it is dated turgid shite. By the end my sister’s two boys, aged seven and eleven, had left the living room to do anything else. Give me back my two hours.

there's this film starting on bbc3 right now... Don't know where they source their data, but the Radio Times shows the rating for this as 'X' - which it may have been in 1979!

Chicken Run Dawn of the Nugget
Decent enough Aardman but lacks the pop of the best stuff. Maybe its just holiday fatigue and I didn’t pick up on them but it felt like it was a lot more straightforward and less dense with gags than something like Farmageddon.
8/10
Green Lantern
I know it got panned at the time but this is at least hitting the average, and probably creeping above it, compared to what Marvel and DC have done the last few years.
6.5/10
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Pretty much Indy by numbers but with an uncanny valley wash of cgi over the whole thing. Makes sense as a holiday afternoon background movie but if you want a film that does what this does there are three all time classics available right beside it on Disney+ so its pretty redundant really.

I think if I had watched it at the time of release, then I would’ve had the rose tinted spectacles as well. But I didn’t find it funny or charming.

It’s a bit slow by modern kids’ film standards so I can kind of see the ‘turgid’ criticism but once it ramps up it’s still great fun. My 7 and 12 year olds adore it so it’s clearly not all that ‘dated’.

My kids also love it. and #2. Personally, having not watched it at the time, I'm not a huge fan. But I didn't hate it.

"Maybe he committed suicide"
Everything John Candy does
All funny.

Look Away 7/10 - Fairly decent horror. A girl who is shy and gets bullied trades places with her mirror alter ego to gain revenge on the people who wronged her, except the alter ego takes it too far. The lead is very good portraying vulnerability and menace in equal measure. Some of the supporting cast aren't great though.

We watched Home Alone a fair bit when the kids were younger 6-9 but these days if we watch it it's purely for the laughs, fast forwarding 30mins or so past the dulnness to get straight to the slapstick of which it excels. All of the characters (including Kevin) are horrible except for Gus, Marley, Marv & Harry who make the movie.

My boy loved Home Alone when we’ve watched it over Christmas. He only like the bit with traps in Home Alone 2 though.

Yeah, Home Alone is a John Hughes classic. My five and eight year old lads absolutely loved it when we watched over Xmas. The sequel too. Now they're regularly referring to each other as "ya filthy animal".

Chris Columbus is currently laying traps in richardiox's house for attributing his film to John Hughes.

Nothing amazing, but ok. THe lead girl was good, and doesn't Jason Isaacs show up?

If Chris Columbus wants credit for Home Alone he has to forego credit for Gremlins. He can’t have it both ways.
