Con Air
Caught this on TV tonight. Seen it a million times but it's one of those easy watches that you can't put down once you come across it whilst channel hopping.
What more can you say at this stage? It's a bonafide 90's action classic. Great characters, amazing cast, decent action sequences, cracking soundtrack by Trevor Rabin and it's genuinely funny to boot.

Turns out Transformers - Age of Extinction left channel4 last night, so we can't watch the last 35mins and we didn't even get to see any bloody Dinobots after sitting through two hours of shit.
At least the response of the transformers-obsessed kid was 'i don't care, it wasn't very good. it was a big trick with no dinobots anyway!' so it didn't lead to tears/tantrums. If you can't even make a movie about giant robot dinosaurs that a kid who loves giant robots and dinosaurs cares about, you're a shit director.
It was dire, but I still have a part of me that wants to finish it because (a) i just don't like leaving films unfinished, and (b) I want to see the bloody dinobots!! I'm sure it'll be back in a few weeks though. They still have Bumblebee if anyone wants to watch the good transformers movie.
1/10 how do you mess this stuff up??

Cocaine Bear
It's pretty dumb. It felt like it was trying *really hard* to be a cult classic or meme-film at times.but it just felt a bit too forced occasionally
Still, it was more fun than not, though it's not something I'm likely to think about much. Enjoyable throw away nonsense.

Jurrasic Park: Dominion
Got some enjoyment out of it because I love dinosaurs but it really is awful. Every character is a bland character that can't seem to act and just do stupid shit.
Just a series of set-pieces strung together with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard looking increasingly confused.

I watched the first half of Mario Bros with the little eye gouger. It’s ok enough. I feel faintly weirded out that Mario has a dad.

The Mask of Zorro. (also known as 'this is just like Puss in Boots!') Watched this with the brats and they both enjoyed it. It's still a great action-adventure with good fun fights and acrobatics, lots of funny bits and great chemistry between all the leads.
I was a bit too slow to cover eyes for the 'head in jar' bit, mainly because it'd been weirdly edited and half cut out and half not. *shrug*
I've never seen the sequel, but the reviews aren't great. It's still kinda a surprise that this didn't spawn a franchise though. "I liked the sword fighting bits but not the smooching!" / 10

The Big Sleep.
Recorded a few days ago. Lovely, but not quite as good as The Maltese Falcon.

Dogville
Lars Von Trier always lays it on a bit thick but he’s still a bloody good filmmaker when he’s on his game, and this might be his best. The stage setting is interesting although I’m still not entirely sure what it was supposed to achieve, but if it was to focus you on the drama itself it works. Performances are good especially Kidman and I found the end unsettlingly gratifying which again is probably the point. Didn’t feel like it’s nearly 3 hour run time either.

Con Air seems like such a perfect property to ruin with a too long underdeveloped streaming series revival

Shazam: the new one. gave up.
After 20 minutes I couldn’t take any more of it. Any charm the first one had is completely missing, it reminded me of the Fantastic Four film with Chris Evans but worse.
Can’t be bothered to waste any more of my time to confirm this is shit.

Trading Places:- Now 40 years old and it shows with choice words - 2 variations of the N word, the F word directed at the gay community - and boobs aplenty.
My son's hadn't seen it, why would they. Overall uncomfortable viewing in parts. Still funny in places.
But, Jamie Lee Curtis.

Trading Places is an easy 9 out of 10, it’s almost perfect. People seem to hold it up as an example of an outdated movie with outdated attitudes, despite the fact it carries a strong anti racism / anti elitism message

Anyway I watched Wonka today. I kept thinking that it seemed to be made with the same love and sentiment as the Paddington movies. Then I checked when I got home and read it was directed by the same person, you can just tell watching it. Great cast, quite magical at times, as it should be
Really was a step above the usual cash in remake type movies, especially the first half. Highly recommended 8 out of 10
Also watched the Hunger Games prequel thing about a week ago. It was alright I suppose. The final third seemed completely unnecessary though. Not recommended 5 out of 10

Dungeons and Dragons - genuinely amazed by how good this is. It’s very hard to get that kind of tone right without it becoming absolutely tiresome but it maintains a ‘fun romp’ pacing all the way through.

The Peacemaker 6/10
It’s ok and Clooney is decent at times but he’s still at the ER wobbly head and stare at the ground phase of his career and given it was released the same year as BvR, it probably came out at the right time for him. The film itself is cliche filled and brings nothing of its own to the stolen bomb that could destroy the world genre.

Enjoyed this, but it's definitely a film we've seen before. However it's well acted throughout and well shot. I think I must be getting desensitised because I guess I was expecting a lot more visceral debauchery for its 18 certificate. You don't feel the run time and the whole thing has a lot of energy.

It felt like it had all the components to be a really exciting thriller, but just wasn't that exciting.

Watched a few films recently:
The Lie - 4/10 Joey King and friend are going to dance camp, when the friends needs to pee and Joey pushes her leaving her and parents lives to unravel. It's crap. I had seen it before, but only remembered halfway so carried on. Joey King is an acting powerhouse though.
Slenderman - 5/10 Joey King and friends summon Slenderman as the boys in their school say they are going to. One of the friends disappears and their lives begin to unravel. Slenderman plays such a small part in this, and its not scary at all. Joey King is an acting powerhouse though.
Shaft - 7/10 - The Samuel L Jackson one. So many recognisable faces in the film, you'll be on imdb checking. Christian Bale kills a black man in an unprovoked attack. There is one witness who disappears and Shaft is trying to find them. Enjoyable.
Shaft - 5/10 - The one with A-Train. Not good at all. Didn't hold my attention.
Chalet Girl - 8/10 A girl who works in Chicken Cottage becomes a live in host for a rich family in the Swiss alps. Also she's very good at snowboarding even though she's never done it before. Really enjoyed it.
Mama - 7/10 - Two girls see a spirit who they call mama everywhere they go and everywhere they go mysterious things happen. Is Mama real? Jessica Chastain looks very un- Jessica Chastain in this. Some good performances from all and the young girls give great performances. The ending is average.

Inspired by treating myself to the new game, OG Robocop. My favourite film of the 80s and certainly IMO the best action film of the 80s. Not only is the action and violence and gadget stuff just perfectly done but it’s a chilling prediction of what has basically happened to the world. Some chilling and sad bits, lots of funny bits with pitch perfect satire.
Don’t think I got the Frankenstein parallels as a kid either.
15/10.

There is a shot in Mama that is just absolutely brilliant. If you've seen it, you know the one. It's the hallway shot with the girls playing in the room.

I remember the short of Mama. Don’t think I ever saw the film based on it. But the short was very memorable.
