My partner being on her phone at home during a film is irritating. If she did it at the cinema it would be on the news tomorrow.

Mission Impossible & The Key of Bobbins, couldn’t figure out why the key has to be plugged into a random submarine it hacked, a two hour exercise in trying to give some sort of gravitas when discussing the “the entity”

Equaliser 3, I suppose Denzel wanted a holiday in Sicily paid for by the production company and he managed it. I mostly learned that Italians will warmly embrace you into their community despite slaughtering dozens of people in increasingly psycopathic ways and never once looking in any sort of danger. The CIA subplot added nothing and Denzel was playing on easy mode

Godzilla Minus One God damn, who would have thought that including Godzilla in the first 10 minutes of your Godzilla movie would make it better. What a concept! Anyway, yeah, that was fucking great. It perfectly understands the charm of the old movies, from the melodramatic acting to the stiff "guy in rubber suit" vibe to the way Godzilla moves. Large swathes of destruction, dumb plans to kill Godzilla coming together. And I clapped like a seal when the music came on. I almost wish it had fully committed to the bit and filmed the whole thing in black and white. There were some scenes (like the scene with the train car) that looked like they could have been done with miniatures, and B&W would have completed that throwback look. But even without that, many bits looked like they could have been filmed in the 50s, in the best possible way. Anyway, it's a loving tribute to the series, and an absolute must-see. 10/10, go watch it on a big screen I might have missed a comment on this already but I saw today that it is getting a re-release (maybe Japan only) as a B&W regrade in January. Named Godzilla Minus One/C or some such.

Lethal weapon 3 - 7/10 My law of diminishing returns was correct, nowhere near as good as the first two but still very enjoyable. However changing riggs to a ‘will risk everybody's life for the lols character’ doesn’t work at all. The whole bomb scene at the beginning is particularly awful. Week villain too.. Only LW4 left to go, which I’m not sure I’ve ever seen. I remember thinking LW4 was great at the time, as it was the first time Jet Li got to do cool stuff on a big budget movie, and it had a couple of cool stunts. Even if it was leaning into that 'we're all family' F&F style stuff very hard.
I wonder how it will have aged though.

What a movie. As above great film. Not been for years. Made me remember how great a film at the cinema can be, big screen, incredible sound. Very difficult to recreate at home. It wasn’t very busy which helped. One thing that left me disconcerted was the constant urge I felt to look at my phone every few minutes. The film was about 2 hours long and although I didn’t get my phone out for the duration, the impulse to check it every 5-10 mins was really noticeable. Feeble, but a sign of the times? Is Gozilla Minus 1 subtitles or dubbed? Subtitled

I'll let you know soon enough, I'm almost certain I've not seen it, which would make sense as the late 90's are a massive haze for me :-)

I worked it out after some exposition near the end of the film, but it was months ago and I can't remember now. Very poorly articulated anyway, considering it was central to the plot.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
First things first, Amber Heard doesn't look like she had her role cut in anyway as she is rather needed for what little of the plot that there is. She and Nicole Kidman, don't do a lot for most of the film though as it's pretty much siblings trying to get along with each other for the greater good.
Arthur and Orm are trying to stop Manta fucking up the world to gain ultimate power that's been promised to him by a long, deliberately lost kingdom that very much reminded me of Necrons with all the green undead.
It's all pretty much by the numbers, lots of action scenes of fighting stuff, some of it you can even follow, no big surprises and some laughs. It's not as fun as the first film which was very silly but leaned into it, here not so much.
It also has some of the most blatant product placement of alcohol in ages and worse Arthur and his Dad actually drink Guinness from the fucking can! In a later scene they do at least use some branded glasses pointing straight at camera.
Anyway, it's fine, as long as you don't expect much but some superhero fights and some decent special effects you'll probably enjoy it but as the end of the DCEU? Well it clearly was never supposed to be.
Also, what is Randall Park doing in it? He's perfectly good as one of the few normal people in it but considering his MCU history it came as a surprise.

“Active engagement” is really the last remaining reason for me to go to the cinema. It’s the only time I can completely detach from everything else and concentrate solely on watching a film. If I’m at home it’s a different mode and can’t resist phone checking. If checking your phone in the cinema you’re also ruining the experience for others and it’s kind of cunty. Yea those who need to keep checking their phone in the cinema need some help. If you cannot watch a film there (home is a different thing) without the need to check your phone constantly - why are you there and what the fuck can be so important?. Off to see Godzilla shortly - I hope I don't have to deal with phone checking weirdos.

Leave the World Behind
I liked this a lot. Like really a lot. Don’t really want to say anything because it will spoil things but this is really unexpectedly deft filmmaking especially for a Netflix thing. Was much smarter than I thought it was going to be in the set up.

No. That's the one with Robert Redford. He's pushing hard for that cash.

Creepy, mysterious and well acted by the stellar cast. Has a good humour hidden away too.

The Family Plan - Movie #583 in the ‘boring suburban parent is really a spy or something’ series but the gag in this one is 80% of the running time is spent on looney tunes sequences of Marky Mark trying to prevent his family from finding out, which is absolutely excruciating.
It’s kind of oddly pitched. It’s supposed to be a family movie, I think, but people get shot and impaled on stuff so not really and it’s too light weight to be an adult spy caper. I dunno, kind of OK I suppose but it’s an odd fit considering the rest of AppleTVs library.
5/10
Point Break - I don’t know if I’m reading too much into this but, being old and lame myself, this is the first time I’ve seen this where I’ve read it as Bodhi being old and lame. Like the 30 year old who hung around the park to buy cider and fags for the kids.
It felt like a movie about two guys resting on old glory, Pappas using Johnny to get his man and Bodhi being the Wooderson of surfing. I dunno, maybe I’m reading too much into it. Maybe it was Keanus ‘I’m 25!’ line while looking like an embryo but it’s the first time I’ve really noticed it’s about a middle aged guy who gets everyone killed while trying to stay relevant.
Really makes you think.

Didn't realise Patrick Swayze was 40 in Point Break.
Also he was 31 in the outsiders... I could have sworn he was a late teen in that.

It kind of contextualises why it was so easy for Johnny to get in with them. He just wanted Johnny to think he was cool.

Saw Godzilla Minus One (no phone wankers at the cinema). Very good and I can see the references to the original - nice to have some characters with depth. Godzilla was a scary fucker and I liked the way they tried to deal with him. I'd give it a reasonable 8/10 - certaintly not the second coming as some have mentioned but a film with heart and fear in equal measure.

Rebel Moon 3/10
I’ve watched it so you don’t have to. If you thought the trailer looked good then take that trailer and add around 2 hours of really boring talking, narration and slow motion mud sniffing.
I wanted it to be good but it really isn’t.
