Star Wars, Radiohead and I think Holly Valance iirc. Still like all three. Probably (- haven't seen Holly in a while).

Godzilla Minus One God damn, who would have thought that including Godzilla in the first 10 minutes of your Godzilla movie would make it better. What a concept! Anyway, yeah, that was fucking great. It perfectly understands the charm of the old movies, from the melodramatic acting to the stiff "guy in rubber suit" vibe to the way Godzilla moves. Large swathes of destruction, dumb plans to kill Godzilla coming together. And I clapped like a seal when the music came on. I almost wish it had fully committed to the bit and filmed the whole thing in black and white. There were some scenes (like the scene with the train car) that looked like they could have been done with miniatures, and B&W would have completed that throwback look. But even without that, many bits looked like they could have been filmed in the 50s, in the best possible way. Anyway, it's a loving tribute to the series, and an absolute must-see. 10/10, go watch it on a big screen Taking your advice and going to see this later today for a solo cinema trip. First time I’ve been to one since January 2017.

Shazam Fury of the Gods
It's fine. Lost a bit of the charm of the original but there were still bits that made me laugh. Zachary Levi looks a bit out of place, why is it only Billy that becomes middle-aged when he transforms?

Leave the World Behind
I enjoyed this. I wonder if tries to cover a bit too much ground, and if you’re looking for something with easy answers you might be looking in the wrong place, but you have four leads with undeniable screen presence in a slickly made package (although I will admit the camera panning made me feel a bit seasick at points).
Also you might want to be aware that Julia Roberts’ character is truly vile, and you’re just going to have to endure that.
8/10

The Holdovers (2023) - 80/100 - Tender film about a jaded old teacher looking after the kids left behind at a boarding school over the holidays. A lot of the film revolves around just three characters, Paul Giamatti as the teacher, Da'Vine Joy Randolph as the cook, and newcomer Dominic Sessa (who was cast from an open audition as they were filming at his very expensive school) as one of the pupils - they all give absolutely top class performances. Highly recommended.
Knives Out (2019) - 75/100 - It's fun and has some good twists, well acted, and looks great with a good dose of humour. Works on a repeat viewing but still a little contrived.

Very difficult to recreate at home. It wasn’t very busy which helped. One thing that left me disconcerted was the constant urge I felt to look at my phone every few minutes. The film was about 2 hours long and although I didn’t get my phone out for the duration, the impulse to check it every 5-10 mins was really noticeable. Feeble, but a sign of the times?

Christ... I've visited the cinema a few times in the last year, solo and otherwise. Never felt the urge to check my phone.

“Active engagement” is really the last remaining reason for me to go to the cinema. It’s the only time I can completely detach from everything else and concentrate solely on watching a film. If I’m at home it’s a different mode and can’t resist phone checking.
If checking your phone in the cinema you’re also ruining the experience for others and it’s kind of cunty.

Yeah, it's a very nasty habit. Phones have given me the attention span of a gnat.
I've taken to shoving my phone somewhere out of reach and slightly awkward to get to, like the gap down the opposite side of the sofa when watching films at home. You still find yourself instinctively reaching for it at times, but it's easier to just think "nope, I put it there for a reason"
If it's on the coffee table or whatever it'll get picked up multiple times and I lose track of what's happening in the film.

It's part of the reason why I like going to film festivals. Because most people who attend them, are well-heeled enough to not be checking their fucking phone during a movie that they probably only have one opportunity in their whole life to see.
Though people still do it, so I don't know. It's an addiction that people just can't shake, apparently.

I was just aware of it more acutely because I knew I wasn’t going to look at it during the film, it’s a cunty thing to do at the cinema.
But being in the habit of phone checking regularly I was really conscious of the usually unconscious habit of picking it up every few mins. Being without the phone feels naked, vulnerable etc.
I can find myself doing it during cutscenes on games. Really stupid, but it’s something I’ve conditioned myself with over the years. Even things like YouTube shorts u can feel the pull of the infinite scroll, and the beginnings of impatience when videos last more than a minute.
Really bad, and can see why the kids these days can get separation anxiety when denied access to thier phones and the urge to be on them constantly.
Something to work on in 2024.

It really fucks me off when I see that familiar blue light in the corner of my eye. I just end up concentrating on that annoying person and it really ruins the experience for me. That and people have full level conversations. Why would you pay to do that???

Yeah because there's fewer distractions in cinema weirdly now I find other people even more distracting when in a cinema compared to at home. They stand out more and it happens much more often now than it used to.
I'm pretty good at putting my phone down when I'm actively watching a film though, especially compared to my partner, who cannot tear herself away for two minutes.

Lethal weapon 3 - 7/10
My law of diminishing returns was correct, nowhere near as good as the first two but still very enjoyable. However changing riggs to a ‘will risk everybody's life for the lols character’ doesn’t work at all. The whole bomb scene at the beginning is particularly awful. Week villain too..
Only LW4 left to go, which I’m not sure I’ve ever seen.

Killers of the Flower Moon - 7.75/10
Overlong and overrated this is yet another example of why auteurs shouldn’t be given complete freedom to do whatever they want. Or rather have some people who are not afraid to tell them that the film is too damn long. I think this film could easily lose an hour of its 3hr 20mins runtime.
That being said, I still think it’s a very good film. I'm not entirely convinced by DiCaprio playing a dumbass. The film is stolen by Lily Gladstone who plays DiCaprio’s love interest. This is one of those performances that I think announces her as a Hollywood star. It’s a stunning performance but she really gets out through the wringer.
This film is grim. Not as relentless or uncompromising as The Whistleblower but there’s a hell of a lot of pain, suffering and death. Like that film, this one is based on a true story.
Complaints over length aside, I think this is a decent Scorsese film, which automatically makes it better than most. Much better than The Irishman. I think this film is a masterclass in terms of filmmaking. It looks and sounds incredible. Certainly a film that I very much admire.
Thankfully there’s a fascinating story being told with some great characters. I just thought it was way too long and the penultimate scene where they reveal the fate of the characters is rather jarring and out of place. And a bit shite.
The Killer - 7.5/10
This film gets off to a very slow start. I was on the verge of boredom right from the start. It takes its time getting to the inciting incident but when it happens, things start getting very interesting.
If Fassbender wasn’t such a great actor then I think this film would have fallen apart. He’s totally believable as a ruthless killer and someone who can take on people who are much more physically imposing.
As with all Fincher films, I thought the opening credits were brilliant.
The film has good action, performances, a decent enough story and a soundtrack featuring The Smiths. From the reviews, I wasn’t excepting too much and the film is entertaining enough after getting past that slow start.
Talk To Me - 8/10
I’m still kind of blown away that this film is from the RackaRacka who did those ultra-violent YouTube videos featuring Ronald McDonald. That’s only a small part of what they’ve done and they really pushed the limits of what was allowed on YouTube. I thought they were all very funny and creative.
Anyhow, they’ve done a horror film and it’s an excellent one. The less you know about this going in the better. There’s some hand type thingy that has supernatural powers and anyone who hols it talk to dead people.
Whilst they’ve REALLY toned down the gore and violence, they’ve still got the creativity. I didn’t find the film that scary but it’s just a good story with likeable characters who, for the most part, don’t do anything too stupid. Unless you count talking to dead people. Yeah, that’s pretty fucking dumb but it’s a horror film and one of the best ones of the year.
