Godzilla Minus One God damn, who would have thought that including Godzilla in the first 10 minutes of your Godzilla movie would make it better. What a concept! Anyway, yeah, that was fucking great. It perfectly understands the charm of the old movies, from the melodramatic acting to the stiff "guy in rubber suit" vibe to the way Godzilla moves. Large swathes of destruction, dumb plans to kill Godzilla coming together. And I clapped like a seal when the music came on. I almost wish it had fully committed to the bit and filmed the whole thing in black and white. There were some scenes (like the scene with the train car) that looked like they could have been done with miniatures, and B&W would have completed that throwback look. But even without that, many bits looked like they could have been filmed in the 50s, in the best possible way. Anyway, it's a loving tribute to the series, and an absolute must-see. 10/10, go watch it on a big screen Has this started to sail on the High Seas then?

I've no idea, I watched it at a cinema. What's a cinema? Haven't been in one for years. On no wait, I think I may have gone in once this year with my son to see the second spiderverse film.

Wonka
It isn't as good as the Paddington films that share so much of the same people behind it (obvious ones being Paul King is directing and he and Simon Farnaby wrote it as well) but that's not exactly a criticism as so little is as good as those two movies. What it is is a film about a character I really don't give much of a shit about and it made me actually get carried along with it. It's a lot of fun, the songs* (it's very definitely a musical) and spectacle are really good and there's a lot of laughs as well. Christmas is certainly the perfect time for this to be released but it's most certainly not a Christmas movie.
*Probably my favourite is the Paterson Joseph/Matt Lucas/Matthew Baynton/Keegan-Michael Key one "Sweet Tooth", it's rather good and the dance routine is not as big as other ones but works really well.
I now look forward to the edits of shots of Dune featuring Wonka rather than Paul Atreides.
Also as mentioned earlier today in the thread.
Go and see Godzilla Minus One at the Cinema, do not wait for it on the small screen.

Small tip about cinema going these days, especially in the age of unlimited subscriptions : no one cares about people seeing films on their own.

Cinema-going is such an unsocial activity anyway. People shouldn't be talking during a film, but there is the collective experience (laughing, getting scared etc) which makes it social. Then, if you have gone with friends, there is chatting about it straight after (preferably in the pub). Saying that, I have been to the cinema on my own several times and still enjoyed the experience.

Yeah, I don't really get why it has such a stigma behind going solo but agree it can be enhanced with others. Just not necessarily so.

I always go solo. Wife isn’t into films and arranging a time that’s convenient for others is a pain. Absolutely no one gives a shit what anyone else is doing.
Godzilla minus one 9/10
Only loses 1 point for the acting not being the best, but it doesn’t matter much. Everything else is great.

Always happy to go solo to the cinema. Normally go middle of the day, often on Sundays or days off. Generally pretty quiet during those times, so don't get much in the way of disruptive audiences.

Fairly sure we've done this nearly as many times as which film out of a certain franchise is the bestest, but yeah going to the cinema on your own is great. When I lived in London and did shift work, I did it *all the time*. Great way of spending an afternoon. I watched Ang Lee's Hulk in a cinema with NOBODY else present once.

Yeah I saw Eyes Wide Shut in an empty cinema in Poughkeepsie. It was random but good.

Once Upon A Time in Hollywood
It passed me by in 2019, so thought I'd give it a go on my day off.
It was great! Great performances, great sets, lots of tension with the Manson stuff (because it isn't historical, just history-adjacent), and some absolutely brutal violence at the end. I wanted more Margot Robbie, but I liked the relatively little we got of her character.
I guess I could see why people got upset about the Bruce Lee scene. But come on, it's a movie, the guy's been dead for almost 50 years. You don't need to protect his reputation anymore.
Not my favourite Tarantino, but still a 9/10 easily

Watched the first hour of Oppenheimer, which is basically a long montage of 30 second scenes with some of the most on the nose dialogue I've ever heard. Almost like watching an extremely long trailer for a decent looking TV series. Is it like that all the way through?

Natural Born Killers (Leaving Prime)
A first time watch and I'd wrongly assumed this was one of Tarintinos though it maybe shares some of his quirks.
I don't normally mind a bit of visual flair but I found the film disorientating as it constantly switched from colour to monochrome and everything seemingly needing to be shot at one weird angle or another that my brain was struggling. The acting is fine with Woody Harrelson, Juliette Lewis and Robert Downey Jr. being the main cast though things begin to lag into the second act when Tommy Lee Jones turns up. The glamorisation of killers by the media message is also fairly obvious and it has a great soundtrack as well that has Leonard Cohen mixing with Nine Inch Nails and RATM.
I think it's a film that relies on its visuals to carry it so I thought it was merely OK and not one I'd rush to watch again.
5/10

Yeah, I always go the cinema alone. I can’t remember the last time I went with someone else. I guess as you get older people are tied up with kids and family’s. If anything l, I don’t go the cinema enough. One of those things I think I should do more often (normally as a sort of New Year’s resolution) but never do.
