Nativity is surprisingly cute but very much looks like one of those British films that was probably part of a Barlow/Carr tax dodge investment scheme. I think David Tennant did an ok sequel too. What’s Freeman done? Wasn’t his ex in trouble for some anti-trans or homophobic comments when she went on Strictly?

Yikes, oh Bilbo. If I was being generous I’d say the rape one was maybe a misplaced attempt at a Jimmy Carr style joke but there’s not much context and its not a good joke if that’s what its supposed to be.

Yikes.
@billnotben How about The Santa Clause, with Tim Allen? That's good fun. Scrooged too.

Don’t get me started on Tim Allen.
Stick to films with female stars. Oh wait there aren’t any.

Ive always got the impression that he's just a bit of a knob with a bad sense of humour rather than being a 'your daily reminder that Martin Freeman is problematic, why is he still getting work?' case, which just seems hysterical.
Like an EG Forumite circa 06/07 got out into the wild.

I've never seen The Santa Claus.
But the basic idea that it starts with him killing Santa always sounded a bit awful for an xmas movie.

Like an EG Forumite circa 06/07 got out into the wild. Probably fair, although I might feel differently if I was in one of the groups he had a bad sense of humour about.

I've never seen The Santa Claus. But the basic idea that it starts with him killing Santa always sounded a bit awful for an xmas movie. 1 - he doesn't kill him. Santa is on the roof then falls off when Tim shouts 2 - there's a very clear shot of Santa waving and disappearing into dust If anything, it sort of implies that being Santa is a curse from which you must be released

What is it with xmas family films constantly going on about people not believing that Santa is real?!

Would I be mad for saying that the closest a recent film or show has come to the feeling and production values of a 90s live action family film is Only Murders In The Building?
That big rich old New York world is very evocative. You could half expect them to run into a young Mara Wilson at every other turn.

Godzilla Minus One
God damn, who would have thought that including Godzilla in the first 10 minutes of your Godzilla movie would make it better. What a concept!
Anyway, yeah, that was fucking great. It perfectly understands the charm of the old movies, from the melodramatic acting to the stiff "guy in rubber suit" vibe to the way Godzilla moves. Large swathes of destruction, dumb plans to kill Godzilla coming together. And I clapped like a seal when the music came on.
I almost wish it had fully committed to the bit and filmed the whole thing in black and white. There were some scenes (like the scene with the train car) that looked like they could have been done with miniatures, and B&W would have completed that throwback look. But even without that, many bits looked like they could have been filmed in the 50s, in the best possible way.
Anyway, it's a loving tribute to the series, and an absolute must-see.
10/10, go watch it on a big screen

Not even medic man getting paralysed & euthanased? Man, that always makes it get dusty in my house. The medic guy isn't euthanised - the resistance to giving him more morphine is that it isn't going to help him, and they might need it for themselves. Imo. The death that put me off watching it for years is the slow knife struggle. Yep the slow knife death is the one bit I really remember, I've only watched it once though. I think I'm due a rewatch as I always thought it a tad over rated.

Shopping (Mubi) - 2.5/5
Mid 90s dystopian ramraiding film by Paul W. S. Anderson. Kind of Grange Hill X JG Ballard. Has all the hallmarks of Anderson's films: terrible script, terrible acting but looks really nice and is lots of fun. It stars Jude Law, Sadie Frost, Sean Pertwee, Sean Bean, Jonathan Pryce and (hello to) Jason Isaacs, all of whom are awful. Dexter Fletcher is not in it for some reason. It also has a pretty banging 90s soundtrack.
I had a great time but it is almost comically bad.

I didn’t realise that Martin Freeman is quite a problematic bloke these days. Racist, sexist etc. Really? never really liked him. I'm going to Geefe this one, can you elaborate? ignore, didn't see your follow up post!

Family Switch (2023) - 30/100 - Wanted a throwaway xmas film to put on in the background whilst wrapping presents. This really wasn't very good at all. Would not recommend.

The Mist (2007) 8/10. Mist envelops a small town, and there's monsters in it. People a trapped in a small convenience store, and society quickly breaks down. Made by the same guy that did Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. Features the recently deceased Andre Braugher. The acting is great for what it is, but the CGI looks dated at times.

As somebody who has to watch all the Nativity films every year and have indeed watched them all this year already. Reviews as below:
Nativity - 6/10, harmless fun with a very annoying Mr poppy, a great turn from Jason Watkins, a worrying scene where Freeman randomly takes/kidnaps a few 7 year old school kids to America and a great musical production at the end. The kids are very good in this one.
Nativity 2 - 6/10, an upgrade in actors due to Tennant, and Jason Watkins is even better in this one, Mr poppy is somehow more annoying. The film itself is pants. The songs and kids performances are not bad.
Nativity 3 - 4/10, everything is worse, but its somehow watchable. Jason Watkins in underused. Catherine Tate as the love interest and Adam Garcia as her ex.... Yeah right.
Nativity Rocks - 2/10 - I give the points for a fairly decent end rock production and Craig Revel thinking he is in a pantomime, the new Mr poppy and the rest of the film are truly awful and the social commentary on immigration is really poorly implemented. I can imagine it pisses off a few Gammon parents though when watching it.
