I don't think I've ever seen Rosemary's Baby. Will rectify.

The subtitles for Rosemary's Baby start the opening with something like "OMINOUS MUSIC", which always cracks me up.

Rosemary’s Baby is just genre defining. Although the “I didn’t want to miss out on date night” thing must have been weird even at the time… right?

Think I watched the Omen not long after seeing The Exorcist for the first time many years ago and it definitely does suffer from comparisons to that absolute classic. I should probably re-watch it sometime though. Not seen Rosemary's Baby is years either, but that really is a fantastic film.
Finishing up left over annual leave before the end of the year with long weekends, so plenty of opportunities to take myself off to the cinema for a quiet afternoon viewing. Did Saltburn and The Marvels a couple of weekends ago, which I think I mentioned a few pages back (Marvels might have just been in the MCU thread). The Friday just gone I went to see Eileen.
Liked this quite a bit, although some parts did drag a little bit. Follows a young timid administrator at a young offenders prison, the titular Eileen (Thomasin McKenzie), who becomes enchanted by a new female prison psychologist (Anne Hathaway). It is directed by the same chap that directed Lady Macbeth, so unsurprisingly it gets dark in places and there is complete shift that occurs towards the end, all from just a single line of dialogue, that is masterfully done.
It is shot to look very grainy and has that air of something from the 70s/80s, which I really liked (my eye is not good enough to say well it is an effect added in post or if it is actually shot on film, but thought it looked great). The central performances are also well done, including Eileen's father, the alcoholic ex-cop. Set at Christmas, but probably not one to get you in the festive spirit.
Also set at Christmas, but surprisingly dark, was The Apartment. Watched this for the first time last night, after seeing it crop up on a few best Christmas films lists. Also happens to be the 1960s Best Picture winner. Jack Lemon plays an admin for an insurance company, known as Buddy Boy, who is gaining favours from his seniors by allowing them access to his apartment for some fun times with their mistresses. It is a comedy and, although obviously a very dated setup, it is quite fun, mainly because Lemon is such a great comedic actor. He is likeable and plays it all fairly straight and there is some fun to be had. Maybe not laugh out loud funny, but plenty to have you smiling.
But, the lightness doesn't last, after it turns out one of the mistresses also happens to be Buddy Boy's crush, who he returns home to find out cold from intentionally taking an overdose of sleeping pills.
It's all quite surprising for a film that would have been out at the tail end of the 50s, dealing with a setup all about powerful men shagging around and the effects that might have on the women they are with. I'm sure if it was made now it would be hard hitting with that and less subtle, but given the context of the time it feels striking.
Only slight complaint perhaps would be the absence of the husbands' wives. Although one plays an important role towards the end, it mostly happens all off screen.
The tone could be seen as jarring in places, but it worked brilliantly for me. I really loved it.

A bunch of us watched The Omen when it was on the telly and while we were on acid when 17/18.
Do not recomede and I am in no rush to watch it ever again. Fuck knows who thought that would be a good combination. 🤣

the Marvels
8/10
Really solid Marvel film, me and my mates really enjoyed it. Better than Iron Man 2 and 3.
Fights were good, the jokes were not too cringe, and I really like Kamala and her family.

The Killer 8/10
I do wish there were a couple more directors like Fincher, it just so good and feels so deliberate and well made. Wife found it a bit dull though.

The Creator, aka ‘what if 9/11 started the Vietnam War but in the future?’. I like what this film had to say and I liked for the largest part how it said it. It would have helped however if they hadn’t gone shopping through recent (and not so recent) sci-fi and lifted visual concepts wholesale to use in this film.
So you have robot police that look exactly like Jabba’s torture droid from RotJ, and other robots with exactly the same facial panel gaps from Cyberpunk 2077. You have the child’s playroom from Akira and the cityscape from Bladerunner (and even a Tyrell quote).
You have the soldiers from Mass Effect (down to the same font on their uniforms) driving the tanks from Saints Row. I don’t think Ralph Ineson even bothered to change his costume from Chernobyl, and by the end they’d decided just to use all the Neil Blomkamp finales at once, plus Silent Running and The Black Hole.
It could had used a slightly smaller sledgehammer to make its points, and it is set far to close to the present day (ancient robot statues 40 years from now?). But it faces the future that we are making for ourselves in an honest way, and asked the right questions. For that I can only applaud it.

Gonna need a score there, otherwise how do we know if it's good?

Hellraiser II
This also was a lovely 4K restoration, matching the quality of the first one.
The film though. It’s fucking nuts. I mean…It’s fucking nuts. At one point the heroine decides to wear the skin of her dead stepmother. Hell looks like an Escher painting. There’s just so much to digest here.
Was it good? I really have no idea. Was it entertaining? Hell yes.

Just to touch on that point, didn't the intro show that we were in a very different timeline, where cybernetics and androids became commonplace in the past? So whilst it's 40 years into the future it's already diverged. I don't disagree with anything you've said though. It's a great looking film but everything it said or depicted has been said before by better films.

They don't make arm wrestling movies like this anymore.

74 year old Sigourney Weaver was perhaps just a little bit miscast as a teenager here... Made even more uncanny (or downright weird) by it looking much more like Winona Ryder than Sigourney.
That glaring distraction aside, it's mostly fine I guess. Predictable but safe.

I’m not sure why they did it that way. Why not just make it 2165?

Over The TopThey don't make arm wrestling movies like this anymore. 9/ 10This keeps popping up in the Kids section of one of the streaming services (i forget which). I'm not going to watch it again to find out, but I don't remember it being a kids movie. Was it? PS/ Black Widow having an arm wrestling scene where a guys arm gets turned to jelly wasn't exactly what I was expecting from a Marvel family movie!

Sigourney Weaver nailed that basketball shot with no vfx. It’s why everyone looks genuinely shocked.
There, one cool thing for you.

The Godzilla bits and Bryan Cranston bits are good, the rest is a bit dull. Looks nice although a bit dark.

I thought it was fine too, but nothing more than that. The the banter-y avengers team seemed a bit miscast and I didn't really care about any of them except Ripley and Wynona, and then ending was a bit meh. Seemed like they used most of their budget on 2 underwater swimming alien as well.
Shame, as some bits had real potential.

I was a big fan of the spin-off novels and comics around that time and Resurrection has basically the same mad scientist/military gone bad plot that all them have so I was very happy with it.
Plus it was the first Alien film to be released after I was old enough to be a fan of the franchise.
And what video game obsessed teenage boy doesn’t want to see a crew of badass space pirates blasting aliens?

Resurrection ain't great, but has its moments that deserve a better film. For the most part though, I found the crew of the Betty to be at least interesting as a proto-Firefly set-up.
