Robocop 2 - 7/10
Just done a rewatch after talking about it a few pages ago. It’s actually good, just let down by some poor decisions and various plot threads left unanswered. Shame as it could have been great.
Not quite Die hard 2 great but still a lot better than people remember it and it has some classic scenes.

Same. I even have the new proper grown up transformer version of Chase from Rescue Bots pre-ordered. Wait, are you saying that geefe is out of touch with da youth? But he's a teacher doncha know. Tbf I teach 17 year old sport lads who don't have enough money to pay for their pre pay electric so yeah. Can't see a venn diagram where they overlap with anyone here.

Black Widow.
Hmm. It's not bad, but it all gets a bit overly convoluted and disjointed and doesn't really flow. Trying to introduce too many new characters and then throw in some twisty mission-impossible style twists that don't really pay off dramatically. Has some lovely shots in it though, and the core pairing of the widow sisters is good, plus the dude out of Stranger Things is reasonably fun. Though I do wonder if they could have cut his character to give it a bit more room to breath and a bit more focus.
The thing you all hated of them surviving lots of damage that should have killed them didn't really bother me at all, given it's a superhero movie.
At one point I thought it was going all Terminator with the taskmaster(?) guy, but that didn't really pay off the way I'd hoped. It would have been cooler if she'd had to work out a way to beat them despite them knowing all her and the other avengers moves.
The cgi is really good, but it's interesting how it has less impact than something like Speed, which has no cgi (though plenty of movie magic trickery) and is kinda understated by comparison. But sometimes less is more.
Not bad, but not really what I'd hoped they'd do with the character. And the Agent Carter treatment of the Red Room was more intersting (and scary). 6.9/10

The Lair of the White Worm
How have I never seen this? Everyone should see this. I don’t know what it is but everyone should see it. Hugh Grant and Malcolm Tucker take on giant worm snake sexy vampires. What’s not to like?
Ken Russell is a total madman but my god he makes an entertaining film. This is absolutely bonkers b movie/gothic horror hybrid apparently based on a Bram Stoker book. Tonally it’s not a million miles away from American Werewolf. Similar black British humour but more bonkers. Much more bonkers.
Fucking loved it.
9/10

One of my lame to fames is that I had my leg plastered in the room in the old derby royal infirmary that doubled as the lab in it, at least that’s what my Dad reckons. I didn’t realise it was set and partly filmed in the Peak District until my he started bollocking on about it a few years ago when we were in Whitby.

Hellraiser - Arrows 2023 4K remaster
What a bloody good job they did on this. Lovely vivid reds, deep blacks and it’s just wonderful. The film itself still stands up as well, and it’s quite a bit more fucked up than I remember. Bloody superb.
We’ll tear your Frank apart / 10
Arrow did the same job on the next three films and I got them all. Been even longer since I’ve seen them. I remember 3 just being a great big silly film and can’t recall a single thing of 4. Will watch 2 in a few days. Think I quite liked that one. None of them are a patch on this though. It kind of deserved to be a one off. Shame the cenobites ended up being so iconic, as it was never about them.

Renfield. 7/10. Very silly, but entertaining and is the perfect length. Cage hams it up as ever and Hoult is decent. Perfect later night Friday film. Watched this tonight and also really enjoyed it, was way funnier than I expected and the cast was... I'm not gonna say great, but "well-suited". In contrast, watched violent night yesterday and thought it was dross.

I enjoyed Violent Night a lot, the most ludicrous thing wasn't Santa slaughtering goons but anyone being expected to think it was Bristol at the start.

Goes downhill after that though

I remember thinking the 3rd one was fun enough, if rather generic and not really adding anything new. Is Hellraiser 2 the one where they spend ages in some weird maze? I remember finding that a bit dull at the time. That may have been my teen-boy-ness.
Speaking of which, I remember recording Lair of the Worm off tv, but I'm not sure I ever watched the whole thing.

Hellraiser 2 is pretty good. A bit unfocused but a good follow up. The third is...a more obvious Elm Street hangover. It's perfectly watchable and has some interesting ideas but the execution is sloppy.

The original Hellraiser is great.
The second one is shite. It laughably bad at points, possibly justifying the "it's so bad it's good" label. It's the original source material for so much of Garth Marenghi stuff for a reason. But it *is* shit, and totally gives up and losses the plot in the last 30 mins or so.

Hellraiser is the better movie but I do prefer the second one in a ‘it’s the one I will always watch if I catch it on’ kind of way. It’s just more watchable. I’m a sucker for lore and I just think the setting is neat

Speaking of played out horror movies (all D+):
The Omen: I never realised this was by Richard ‘Superman The Movie’ Donner and you can tell it was made by a director of real skill. Well shot and full of suspense. 8/10
The Omen 2: the classic ‘same but worse’ sequel. It’s reduced to a pedestrian final destination type thing where you just wait for anyone who finds out about Damien to die. 4/10
The Omen 3: rarely has a movie squandered a setup like having the actual anti-Christ wandering about. If you’ve read American Jesus, you know what it could be. Instead it’s just a young Sam Neil being attacked by priests every five minutes. 3/10
The Omen 2006: An artless remake cash in. Everything from the original run through a photocopier by a talentless hack. 2/10
So, mainly all shit but the first one being so absolutely righteous means that I wouldn’t be mad at like an A24 remake or something. There is gold there just nobody could be arsed to mine it properly.

The Omen is one of rare things: a horror film that is actually properly a good film by normal standards without applying the "yeah but it's a horror film" handicap. See also the Exorcist and er...I'm sure there are others.
Think you're a bit harsh on Omen 2, applying the logic of "yeah but for a horror film" it's not so bad. Didn't a bloke get decapitated with a flying sheet of glass? Come on!

Post by Aunt Alison on Dec 3, 2023 10:37:46 GMT
That's in the first film
There's also the omen curse, which is quite interesting - a number of misfortunes befell the cast, including someone getting decapitated in a similar way

The Omen has always suffered a little bit from being considered an Exorcist cash-in (which it definitely is) but as with all Donner films it’s just really well paced and engaging. That guy really knew how to tell a story, which is weirdly under-appreciated as a skill for Directors. Maybe because it should go without saying at that level, but it’s amazing how many even top drawer filmmakers don’t get basic structure and pacing right.

Think you're a bit harsh on Omen 2 It’s probably due to watching them in quick succession. The first one is so good and the second one just isn’t.

Bodies! Bodies! Bodies!
Feels a bit like that Steve Buscemi "What's up fellow kids" gif at times, but zips along at a decent pace. It was entertaining enough but the deaths were pretty shit.
6/10
Pete Davidson is a weird looking fucker.

Robocop 3 - 2/10
I watched it so you don’t have to. I can’t believe this had a bigger budget than the first two as it looks like a made for tv movie with acting to match. It’s awful.
It also makes 2 look like a masterpiece so that is now an 8/10 and the first robocop is obviously an 11/10

I was late to both The Omen and The Exorcist (perhaps in my 30s) and was so impressed with both. Just excellent films, as Chops says, a rarity in that genre. Both need a rewatch.

Rosemary’s Baby was the one that started the trend of those more serious auteur driven posh family brush with the devil-related horror films. It’s also fantastic.
As much as I love John Carpenter and Wes Craven they did kind of drag the genre back into b-movie territory where it stayed very firmly for a few decades until very recently again.
