The audience wants lightsabers and the originals again but new. It’s not really something that can be achieved.
Lower budgets would let them be braver but they don’t seem to want to do that. It’s amazing Andor got made as that’s more like I want new Star Wars to be but the budget is far higher than the likely audience for what is essentially a fairly low action drama justifies.

Well, they could keep making star wars books, games, toys, etc.. at least for a while. I don't really mind those filling in gaps in the lore, because it feels a bit different and it's easy enough to ignore if you want.
But I guess if they stop making big movies then Star Wars as a thing falls out of Pop Culture consciousness, which means less money and less people buying the books, games, toys, etc..
Already, SW is a lot smaller in places like China than in the west, because they never got the originals and the lackluster newer movies means it doesn't have the cultural awareness of things like Marvel, Harry Potter, etc..
And for younger generations in the west, who have probably only grown up with the newer ones, if they don't keep it going it's going to drift away like Avatar. And then no money.
Anecdotally, most of the kids in my kids' school already seem to have very little awareness of or interest in Star Wars as a thing.

If they keep making shite films and TV shows, it's all a bit moot anyway. Do kids care about Transformers? Nope.
And Hasbro tried REALLY hard there.

I mean, Star Wars probably has to die at some point, right?
For me personally, I liked the original trilogy a lot as a kid and watch them occasionally now, and I thought some of the new stuff was good (Rogue One, Andor, a bit of the Mandalorian). But I wouldn't shed many tears if the whole thing stopped tomorrow; I'm more into other things now.
But even if you're more connected to the thing than I am, the train only keeps going if new generations have similar levels of nostalgia - enough to keep making new things when they're older. My sister has tried to pass her Star Wars fandom onto my nephews, but only to mixed success. They just like other stuff.
Of course that's completely anecdotal, I've no real idea how many kids like a Star War these days as opposed to 30 years ago. But it feels like the enterprise is still coasting on nostalgia for the original trilogy, and I'm not sure how much coal is left in that engine.
I know people have been trying to rehabilitate the prequel trilogy. Has that been successful? Are we going to get more legacy sequels about Anakin and whatever 10 years down the line? Or legacy sequels to the legacy sequels with Rey and such? I'm doubtful.

Based purely on Reddit posts I've seen, there seems to be a whole generation that grew up on the prequel trilogy that are now adults and are just as nostalgic about them as us old farts are about the OT.

Anyways, speaking of nostalgia
Austin Powers
I don't think I'd watched this in at least 20 years, so thought I'd put it on.
It's funny how differently the jokes land now. I remember parroting all the famous lines from it when I was a teen, but now I'm giggling at the existence of a character called Basil Exposition. Or a henchman called Random Task. Or Paddy O'Brien, "ex-Irish assassin".
And some of the bits are absolutely timeless, like the endless 3-point turn.
In short, it's fucking great. I'm going to make my nephews watch it and like it, so they can join the chorus to get the 4th one greenlit.
9/10

I guess it happens to all generations, like the way westerns or lassie have fallen out of favor. But because it's *my* generation, it's more noticeable that a lot of the stuff that I just assumed would always be famous is disappearing.
There are things like The Beatles or Elvis or Aliens or Monty Python that you'd just assume everyone was familiar with, be they older or younger than you. But we're getting to the point now where a lot of young adults won't be familiar with any of those.
You have some things like Batman or Mission Impossible that seem to have managed to get a second (or 4th) life, but other than that it's all going to go the way of black & white movies.
PS/ Yeah, there's a generation who're nostalgic for the prequels, at least in some countries, and I guess that shows you can take a long break and then try and come back. But I wonder how many will be nostalgic for the new content (despite at least 3 of the movies being better than any of the prequels). A lot of the Sequel Trilogy + Solo + Rogue One relies on nostalgia for the originals.

I dunno. That film about conspiracy theories that Myers did recently was pretty awful. Something's are best left alone.

A lot of the Sequel Trilogy + Solo + Rogue One relies on nostalgia for the originals. As much as Ashoka absolutely sucked, it was quite interesting for being the first (I think) cash in nostalgiafest for younger Millenials rather than elderly gen xers. I never watched any of the cartoons so I had no idea who half the people were. And the MCU has probably been going long enough to start pumping out 'remember Iron Man?' content to people now in their 30s.

What will be really interesting is when these properties become public domain like Peter Pan or Snow White or whatever. Obviously Disney will keep pumping out stuff so that they keep ownership of their version of the IP (this is the reason for all the live action remakes) but eventually anyone will be able to make a Star Wars film as long as it doesn’t resemble the Disney ones.
We’re pretty close to the original comic book IPs like Superman and Batman being public domain, which is going to be fascinating.

I think its more or less one disney character per year technically entering public domain starting next year with Mickey Mouse.
It will take some big, brass balls for asylum to make a Mickey horror movie straight out the blocks but Im there for it.

I guess we'll see how far people push it with Steamboat Willie next year. You're only allowed to use the character as they existed at the time, which will be pretty limiting.
95 year old batman and superman are pretty different to what we're used to today (well, supes less so I suppose)

Yeah. Apparently, you couldn’t have Superman fly because the OG version could only leap buildings in a single bound.
You’d be stuck doing golden age versions of everything which would get pretty old very fast.

For example you get all sorts of representations of Shakespeare and Dickens stuff. But if you did a version of Romeo and Juliet that resembles Baz Luhrmann’s, that’s not ok.

Austin Powers 1 and 2 are fucking gold. 2 is one of those rare sequels that just does something different.
The joke about time travel from Basil where Austin asks if any of it makes sense and Basil says "try not to think about it, and that goes for you at home, too".
They're actually much funnier and more subtle than you remember.
3 can fuck off, though

Pop quiz hot shot...
Speed
Die Hard on a bus still holds up really well. Great music and stunts. Keanu still delivers every line far too earnestly and sounding like Ted, but he's still doing that in John Wick and it's part of why we love him. Dennis Hopper, Jeff Daniels and Sandra Bullock provide great support, with Hopper chewing the scenery and Bullock throwing in loads of nice little touches that give the film some charm. I was gonna give it an 8, but then we got to the end credits and I'd totally forgotten about this so it gets a 9!
What do you do? Huh? What. Do. You. Do?

I loved Speed when I watched it earlier this year. You don’t really get action blockbusters like that anymore. And so many cool stunts. Do not watch the sequel.

Renfield. 7/10. Very silly, but entertaining and is the perfect length. Cage hams it up as ever and Hoult is decent. Perfect later night Friday film.
