Resurrection on the PS1 was a great game and graphically stunning. Its association with the film did it absolutely no favours.

I love that my comment about a weird choice of face for a character in Avatar 2 turned into the 50th discussion of the alien films so far this year.

Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring
Got a 4K Ultra HD copy for my birthday to go with the new TV we bought a few weeks ago.
It's glorious in every aspect. Don't really have anything else to say.
10/10

Gone Girl
You know, I'd somehow made it almost a decade without knowing the details of what happens in this movie, and I am so fucking glad that I remained spoiler-free. It's dark and messed up and complicated. And absolutely hilarious.
I can see it maybe being a bit problematic in the way it treats things like sexual assault. But I dunno... it's a movie about extremely fucked up people, I don't think any statement it makes could be generalised to real life.
9/10, this has jumped almost to the top of my favourite Finchers

All that post-processing bollocks gets turned off, especially TruMotion.
The disc had both the theatrical and extended editions on - went with the theatrical version as I think it's the best (though I used to think the extended versions were better).
I'm a massive fan of the books and read them every year or so but I don't think the extra bits work as well in the films - Jackson was right to cut them imo.
Edit - Although I do think Fellowship probably benefits most from the extended cut for non-book fans or people new to the film.

Cabin In the Woods
Never really got the Whedon love especially Buffy which is shite, but this is decent. Hadn't seen it in ages but it's an enjoyable comedy horror.
6/10

I like it. Although I can see why the reveal makes it a one and done for most people.

I feel like other films explored the tropes of horror in much smarter ways, while also being good films aside from the meta commentary.
Cabin in the Woods is just so…explainy…

I loved Cabin in the Woods when it came out. Tried to watch it a year ago and was bored, once you know the big meta twist it doesn't really hold up as being that entertaining.

Training Day - 4/5
The new 4K restoration is lovely (although it did finally provoke me into buying a service remote to sort the auto-dimming on the CX, it's a dark film).
Denzel is superb, but it's funny he won an Oscar for this. It's a bit like if Alan Rickman had won for Robin Hood or Die Hard, it's such a ridiculously overblown villainous role, but it is super fun. I'd forgotten how nuts the whole film is in general, it's very close to being a stupid 80s/90s style action film, and in fact definitely does spill over into that territory several times!
It's proper good though, and the soundtrack still bangs.

Yeah, i watched it the other week. Really enjoyed it, proper grimy. Denzel is indeed ace but without being hammy.

Don't really have anything else to say. 10/10 I rewatched the whole trilogy over the last few weeks (the theatrical ones because I’m a heathen). First time I must have seen them in about a decade. They hold up so well. Some of it looks a bit dated in a way older films do, but at the same time it’s still genuinely really impressive. The scope and ambition still makes it feel properly epic with a capital E and it is made without an ounce of cynicism that seem prevalent in a lot of big blockbusters these days as studios look to cash in on IP rather than meaningfully tell beloved stories. (Hello Uncharted which i watched this afternoon. Ouch 1/5)

I haven't seen it for years, but at the time I was sure 90% of the second Hobbit film is basically Tangled.

Training Day is considerably better than any other film Antoine Fuqua has made. I think it was a fluke, but also considerably lifted by the two leads who are really great and enjoyable to watch.
I think Ethan Hawke is really underrated. His body of work is vast including lots of really good indie stuff. I’m not sure why he never really got considered top tier like some of his contemporaries but I really like him.
