Prometheus is shit. Maybe not quite as much, or for the reasons that people thought, but it's definitely shit.
Covenant is much, much worse. However, fingering the flute has given me more retrospective entertainment than Prometheus ever did. I'm calling a score draw.
I agre with Kal that I would like to see them try to tie it up though. Maybe Napoleon ties into it somehow.

I'm not being totally facetious with the "on purpose" bit. The director has tried to hand wave some of it away with just that. Any shitty CGI you see is ‘flash time’ and on purpose.

Any scene where Supergirl levitated or flew just looked absolutely shit. Just use a fucking wire and edit it out like we've been doing for forever!

Prometheus and Covenant are hugely entertaining sci-fi action films. They're both completely bonkers and I love them. A third one consisting solely of multiple Michael Fassbender's would be most welcome, ideally including Xenomorphs with his face. They're clearly not even close to the level of the first two but both are probably better than the other one.

A follow up to Covenant should just feature Troi and Riker shutting down the holodeck and Will saying "this holonovel Geordie recommended just didn't work."

Did the alien burst from a living dog or a hanging beef carcass?
Also, were there loads of shots of black sand Teeside beaches at the start?

Watched Plane last night. Some well-staged bits of tension when they're on the plane itself, but it's a bit too serious and grim for what is quite a goofy premise. And, tbh, it's wrapped up rather neatly with little of the usual back-and-forth of plans made, going wrong, new plans, etc. Still, Gerry's always good value and Luke Cage as a badass convict is top notch.

Napoleon
Somehow they made a 2hr30 film feel rushed. Skips or glosses over a lot and feels like a greatest hits montage stuck together. The battle scenes are good, and Napoleon and Josephine's scenes together are funny and tragic. Just have a feeling the directors cut will be a better film.
7.5/10
Another trip to the Everyman and it's ruined all other cinemas for me. I don't think I can go to a different one now.

I did that thing with Covenant that I do with the Mission Impossible films and Ant Man, where I started watching it thinking I hadn't seen it before, then got to a certain bit (the flute scene) and realised I had, but clearly was not at all engaged enough on either occasion.
I like Prometheus. I don't get the hate. It's atmospheric, it looks great, the score is enjoyable, I like some of the questions it raises and the philosophy. Meh. Nerds gonna nerd.

The flute scene is one of the most unintentionally hilarious scenes in any film ever. Every time I see it my jaw is on the floor with how ridiculous it is.
As an aside I found the whole two Davids thing very confusing the first time I saw it. They don’t look or act different enough and I really didn’t know what was going on.

I liked it when he does the fingering for him.

Prometheus btw has a 73% Fresh rating on RT, which again indicates the outrage and extreme negativity it received in nerd quarters wasn’t really indicative of the wider perception of it.
Covenant is on 65% which is probably about right tbh. Not great but not exceptionally awful.

Prometheus existing is the spoiler.
Character who was scared of his own shadow suddenly decides to be friendly with something that anyone sane would be wary of is some of the shittiest writing in recent cinema.

I also looked this up when we started talking about it, as I expected the reviews were better than you would think from the discourse. Even the audience score is a reasonable 68%, which suggests that it really isn't as disliked as you would think. I've not watched it since seeing it in the cinema, but I liked it quite a bit. As with most Ridley Scott films, it was at least a beautiful looking film, which was enough to keep me engaged throughout. Certainly better than Covenant, which weirdly had loads of people claiming it to be a big improvement on Prometheus when it first came out.

Covenant shits the bed when they meet David and his fingering. And how he created aliens, one of the most iconic creatures of all time, was really awful.

The dialogue is awful in this movie. I wanted to love it. I really wanted to love it. I went to the cinema as soon as it came out and then bought the BluRay as soon as it was available in case I just didn't get it. But no. It looks lovely, but it just got so much wrong. Was there ever any reasoning behind Guy Pearce being cast as an old man with a rubber mask in the end? I assumed there must have been some huge thing that we didn't see that made it all worth while...? I feel I need to give it another go with all the talk here, but I know it's going to make me cross again!

Prometheus would be remembered a lot better if it was never connected to the Alien Universe.
However even as a stand alone Sci fi movie it pales in comparison to something like The Creator or District 9

I seem to remember they did a load of pre movie marketing and filmed scenes with young Guy Pearce giving back story?
