And a lot of smart people do stupid shit irl as well. Constantly. So I never get the criticism as much in films.
I was disappointed it wasn't as heavily connected to Alien as I wanted to be, but once I got passed that it is decent.

Man, I can't believe we managed to get round to discussing the Alien franchise. Well done chaps.

I'm sorry you'll need to type that again. It looked like you wrote that you haven't seen any of the alien films.

Actually scratch that I have seen covenant. I thought it would be a clean entry point.

Well as entry points go that everyone involved in the future of the franchise is going to ignore, Covenant is a great place to start rather than the original film.

I honestly can only remember a handful of moments from Covenant. All of them involving The Last Fassbender.
Quite enjoyed the last Predator film, to be fair. The Disney+ one.

The first time I watched Prometheus the only ‘that was a stupid thing to do’ was the famous running away from the rolling donut bit, and even that I’ve seen similar in many other films. All the other things I’ve seen people moan about are standard horror film stupidity and no worse. I think it suffers badly from angry geek syndrome. It promised a lot that wasn’t delivered and that upset Alien fans, somewhat understandably. But in itself it’s a very well made science fiction romp. Certainly wasn't the worst film I've seen, and I am a big fan of the aesthetic. But it did do some daft shit. Not seen it for yonks though, so could be time for a rewatch.

I hated Prometheus at the time, but it did grow on me a bit. I was actually very interested in a sequel, but I wanted a lot more of the Engineers stuff. I don't think Covenant was a proper sequel at all really.
Well it was, but it basically ripped up the entirety of Prometheus bar Fassbender weirdness.

They tried to get it back on track and make a “proper Alien film” while still attempting to follow the Prometheus story and fucked up both. That said, again, I’d have love to see how the third one would have tied it all up. Maybe they’ll do a comic. They usually do with these things. Speaking of which the Alien 3 William Gibson comic is worth a read.

Yeah, that's why I didn't get along with Prometheus. It just didn't seem to know what it wanted to be or do. I get the feeling it was in development hell for a very long time and for some of that time was never intended as part of the Alien universe. It would have been better as it's own thing, but I guess that made it harder to secure funding.

The Flash
Ignoring Ezra Miller's behaviour and associated forensic embroilment irl, they turn in a really good performance in this. You get the feeling than a character is being potrayed here rather than a series of witty retorts being recited in Spandex. Also, Keaton's Bruce Wayne as a properly washed up has-been is really solid. Yeah I know we're all bored of superhero films now, but this really highlights how banal some recent offerings have been.
The other interesting this is the CGI. It is fucking *awful*. Almost as if they were doing it on purpose.
There's a also a few point that raised a chuckle.
Seen worse. 6.5/10

I don’t get why everyone is so mad at the running away from the giant wheel thing in Prometheus.
a) I don’t think anyone being chased by a rolling skyscraper would be doing anything other than panicking like shit so all rational thought is out the window
b) that thing was so big that running sideways might not give you a sufficient lead to get out the way without it catching up and crushing you first

The "people doing stupid shit" thing always felt weird to me as a reason why Prometheus is bad. People do stupid shit all the time! Even smart people do stupid shit! And if horror movie characters behaved intelligently at all times, you wouldn't have much of a horror movie, right?
Which isn't to say that Prometheus is perfect, or that you must like it or anything. But that particular criticism feels like it's a symptom of other problems people have with the movie.

For me, it was more why it had to happen at all. Something that size would collapse in on itself, surely? Rather than act like a runaway big wheel from a cartoon.

I really do lament the death of practical effects which seem to be purely in the realm of mid to low budget horror now.

Very much so. The CGI is so bad it almost at "how the fuck did that get out the door?" level.
I'm not being totally facetious with the "on purpose" bit. The baby and dog falling sequence (especially in the credits) almost feels like a stylistic choice.
And that sequence with the globes and the onlookers. Jesus

Prey is legit amazing. The one before that is my most hated film of all time. Prey is quite good but not amazing. Like RLM, I actually think it kind of underutilised the main character. We should have seen her using her skills to train others and become the badass warrior. I think it also says a lot that I don't remember as much of it as I'd like. There's the bear sequence, the first fight with her brother and the bit at the end with the mud, but there's nothing as memorable as the first 2.

The problem was, these are people doing stupid shit when we're meant to believe they were handpicked for a mission critical to the understanding of the origins of mankind, put in a situation they have literally been trained for. So having your scientists say they're not interested in giant dead humanoids or trying to pet an alien is always going to put you on the back foot. Not to mention the geologist didn't once try to show someone his new compass clinometer. But I still like it.

I like the main character's arc in Prey. And it has some beautify shots. It doesn't quite have the OTT personality of Predator 1/2 though. Speaking of which the Alien 3 William Gibson comic is worth a read. Audible have an audio drama of Gibson's script for A3. They even have Michael Biehn and Lance Henriksen reprising their roles. I think it's free if you have an audible subscription, and it's only about 2hrs long. It's decent, and has some good bits in it, but it's ultimately a bit lacking in any new ideas or big moments. Maybe the comic's visuals give it a bit more personality. Worth a listen if you have audible though. www.amazon.co.uk/Alien-III-Audible-Original-Drama/dp/B07QY1FV73
