The Battery - 7/10 (on Prime atm) a low budget zombie flick (so very little gore/big action sequences) about two guys making their way through the US, more of a story of their relationship with one of them who can't bring himself to killing any zombies, not your average zombie flick, not brilliant but different and enjoyable.

Diani & Devine Meet the Apocalypse - 6.5/10 (on UK Prime atm), a comedy looking at the apocalypse with a couple (stand up comics in the movie) who end up carving their way through the US to try and find some kind of sanctuary after it all kicks off, why it's all kicked off is never divulged (and is also not required) it's more about their journey and the quirky nutcases they meet along the way.

A Haunting in Venice
The latest Kenneth Brannagh Poirot adaptation now on D+. Starts promisingly enough with actual location shots not just the wash of green screen and obvious soundstage sets that the first two were comprised of. But once things get started it had its own problems for me. Every scene is incredibly darkly lit and a lot of the shot choices are obviously designed to disorientate. Which they do but it isn’t very comfortable.
6/10

Not that I would wish death on anyone, but I do hope that Disney might actually be allowed to release a decent version of the originals when Lucas pegs it. My first intro to the films were the special editions in the reissue in the nineties, so I've never actually seen the original theatrical releases. Depending on how HD/4K you need things to be, there are fan releases that you can find. I think there's one called the De-Specialized Edition that's basically trying to recreate the originals using the high def material available.
The ones I like are called the Custom Special Editions and they basically keep the best bits of the new versions (improved space battles and things like the backdrops of Cloud City) while cutting out all the crap like the dance numbers and obviously fake cgi. They also fix a lot of the color grading issues, etc..
But I don't think those are available in full HD. They might be these days..
Basically, they are what my memory thinks the old ones were.

I recall a creepy child waiting for him outside the toilet after the taps came on by themselves.

They are! You’re standing there tinkling away, then a gurgle, then a cascade of water tumbles down the face of the urinal. You’d better hope the anti-spray mat isn’t clogged with chewing gum, so the wave of fresh water doesn’t rush over and out.

When that happens, I try to aim up. In the hope that my stream will overcome gravity and force the water flush into submission.

John Wick 4 (Prime) 7/10
I only saw #1, so initially I didn't have a clue what it was all about (my son wanted to watch). It's too long, so we watched in two sittings. The action set pieces are terrific, but the rest around it was ok-ish.

We paused it part way through to finish another evening, saw there was still somehow another hour and half left and just binned it off. Utterly tedious film.

I would say it is well worth returning to. The final hour and half or so is basically what the whole film should have been.

I agree that JW4 is too long, and is probably the worst of the series overall. But I think the backlash to it is a bit overblown; it's still a lot of fun, and is still better than most other modern action things I can think of.

I watched an hour of Mr Nobody then gave up. I was actually quite enjoying it but it was just starting to outstay its welcome. I checked to see how long was left and when it was 90 minutes I thought fuck that.

Wick 4 is waaaay too bloated. But, I can absolutely remember most of the set pieces and what happens. That's a hell of a lot better than other films.
If I had to, I'd get rid of the Japan sequence and head straight to France. Skargaard is a great villain and Yen is lovely. None of it is "bad" but there's just too much.
Nothing tops the first.

The problem is that it’s John Wick MAX, for better or worse. Anything you liked and anything you disliked about the others is kicked up into orbit. If you’re lukewarm on it already it’s just going to irritate you.

Yeah, it could have done with cutting down each of the set pieces a little (japan and the arc de triomph mainly) but and it's totally silly, but I still enjoyed it a lot. It didn't feel half as long as recent films like Indy 5 or The Flash.
You just kind of have to get on board with it. Otherwise the stair fight is going to break you. For me, the stair fight made me lol (in a good way)

The last hour(?) in France was worth the wait (in two sittings). It did start to get a bit ridiculous at that point, but I'm fine with that. The Champs Elysees scene was awesome. It's just a pity that in between the action scenes not a whole lot interesting was happening. Oh, I did like Caine (I have a soft spot for blind Kung Fu fighters 😋)

Napoleon(2023)
I'm not sure how I felt about this tbh. Biopics tend to focus on a single important part of the subject's life but the first 3rd flits around in quite an unfocused way so as a result it felt much longer than it's over 2 and a half hours running time and I really felt it. I think Phoenix and Kirby did a decent job with what they've been given but some of the dialogue was borderline awful at times but then as I type this perhaps it was intentional as there more than a whiff of Commodus from Phoenix.
I'm not a stickler for the historical accuracy compared to many critics losing their minds over that and I think Scott's eye for presenting a full scale battle is still excellent but those were quite fleeting but it couldn't save the movie tbh. I didn't hate but I didn't enjoy, I'd say I preferred The Last Duel much more than this, I can only imagine what Gladiator 2 will be like.

Die Hard 8/10.
Last night was the first time I have ever watched DH on a screen bigger than your average TV! Hence the check. Shown by Stow Film at the brilliant Town Hall (Walthamstow) - beer, wine, popcorn on offer. And we sat in the main council chamber. All good.
Anyway, it's Die Hard, you've seen it, and it's a Christmas film. ✌️

With regards the Star Wars OT, I remember seeing a behind the scenes doc where Lucas said he put something in legally so that nonody could remake or change the OT in any way. Maybe he’s also done that for the prequels. I bet he kept that in when he sold to Disney. I’ve still got the OT DVD packs with both the original and special editions in there. Got the original laserdiscs somewhere as well. I don’t think we’ll see the original OT officially released at all.

Two bad movies this weekend
Out-Laws (Netflix) Bumper out of Pitch Perfect as a pathetic bank manager whose bank is robbed, possibly by his future in-laws. Humour doesn’t land at all - 3 out of 10
Thor : Love & Thunder (Disney+) I liked Ragnarok but I did not like this. A badly acted, stilted mess of the movie. The start with the GofG was like they acted their parts at in different places at different times and they were spliced together. Rubbish - 3 out of 10

I would love the worst film I've seen to be a 6/10.
Anyway, I'm not ready for Christmas films yet. If indeed I even am this year. But this certainly comes close...
Big
Not seen it in years. If you rewatch it - notice how the dad completely disappears from the film after the scene at the fair. It's like they either shot that first or last, because he doesn't appear at all.
It's not aged as badly as I thought and is one of the better "child grows up magically" films. They also handle most of the sketchy stuff well. Tom Hanks elevates it, as he does most things.
Piano bit is lovely.
7/10

Love & Thunder was atrocious compared to what came before it. Honestly makes me think less of Taika. Bottom tier Marvel.

I thought Love & Thunder was fine? The tone was a bit weird sometimes, and the jokes didn't land as well as they did in Ragnarok. But people seem to see it as this travesty, whereas to me it feels on a par with most other MCU stuff.
(but then I think most of those movies top out at "perfectly fine", so maybe my standards are a bit wonky)
