Then re-watched the Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond documentary (about the making of the fantastic Man on the Moon) as I had totally forgotten I had seen it when putting it on, Jim totally lost himself during this movie (he maintains that Jim disappeared and Andy took over) and he really put the crew through their paces during filiming. Even if you're not a fan of Andy Kauffman, the Man on the Moon movie or Jim Carrey, it really is a fantastic documentary about someone losing themselves in their art. Highly recommended. Yeah, honestly don’t think Carrey came off well in that. Appreciate him being method but other people were trying their best in that film too, and him winding people up didn’t help them at all. You had guys like Jerry Lawler who were genuine friends of Kaufman getting so pissed off they damn near broke his neck (although apparently it was Jim’s minders who did the damage).

I'm really torn, as there definitely was some shitty behaviour (especially towards Lawler) but at the end the crew gave Tony Clifton an emotional send-off and that was Jim at his worst. I am not a big fan of method acting, as it's generally on the crew side that takes the brunt of the behaviour (it's rarely someone method acting positive roles), but I think Jim really believes he was taken over to a degree by Kauffman. Regardless, he doesn't come out of this in the best light, but it's a fascinating watch. He was excellent in the role, and the behind the scenes stuff adds to the mystique of Kauffman and the movie.

Red Dawn Remake (Leaving Prime)
Outside of the premise and Patrick Swayze (now Chris Hemsworth) I don't remember much about the original film. This gives it a fresh lick of paint and essentially stitches together a series of action sequences which aren't bad if your looking for some popcorn fodder. Its not the worst remake I've seen.

mikeckYeah you’ve hit the nail on the head there. Isn’t it strange how nobody ever seems to method act a much nicer and kinder and more generous person than they are in real life? It’s always the stories of someone being an absolute bellend for their art strangely… I enjoyed the movie and the documentary but latter was definitely made to make Carey look a genius and at worst a bit tormented. I suspect if they’d wanted it could easily have been geared towards showing what a self-involved pretentious cunt he is. But maybe they all are.

Past Lives: 7/10 Big fan of Greta Lee, but Teo Yoo steals the show.

A Quiet Place Part II (2020) - 50 - I enjoyed the first despite people being stupid a lot of the time, but they were even more moronic this time. Why does the island radio station play a song over and over that people have to decrypt to figure out a path to safety? Why not simply a recorded message saying "hey, they can't swim, we're on this island and it's safe if you can get here"?
When one of the creatures does make it over on the boat, do they sit quietly and as still as possible? No, they run around screaming like fucking idiots.
That safe space, with the cloth covering the latch. Yeah, let's flip it over casually each time so it doesn't shut fully and seize up. No, no, I wouldn't dream of just wedging the cloth in the slot so it can't lock up and I don't have to do it every time, often in an emergency. I know in horror people often do daft things, but this just takes the biscuit. It was fun in some ways, and it's well put together and the acting is solid on the whole, but it wound me up so it's getting a low score as (I think) it's trying to be serious and moving, and not a schlocky horror so really should try harder to be believable.

It absolutely doesn’t need to exist. I found it pretty inoffensive, but A Quiet Place wrapped up every bit of story that needed to be told.

It's kind of an origin story I believe. When the aliens first arrive.

I hope that the aliens turn out to be the origin of that alien that was the origin of the xenomorphs.

I've heard that, for films with aliens, the 3rd film's the charm.

Especially if they end up in production hell. I hope there's a director's cut.

If only the alien hadn't been so busy and had remembered to go back and free his mum from slavery, just think of all the pain that could have been avoided. Noooooo!
I thought Quiet Place #1 was pretty much perfect, but I've been procrastinating on watching part 2. More goodness would be good, but it did feel pretty complete.

I hope they put the 3 within a word in the title. Always an indication of a quality movie.

Quiet Place 2 is such a nothingy sequel. I really dislike it. It’s such a pointless, direct to video waste of the earths resources. I genuinely prefer Bird Box Barcelona in the cynical cash in stakes. At least it took the original and went a bit crazy with it. QP2 is just so pedestrian.

Rogue One
First time watching since seeing it in the cinema and it's still great. Pretty much nails the star wars war movie it's going for.
It even managed to impress the kid who had noped out of the prequels and thought Force Awakens was boring. Though the cgi faces caused some laughter at dramatically inappropriate moments.
8.5/10 I hope they go back to it in a few years and redo the cgi faces when the tech is good enough to make them seamless.

Be careful what you wish for… They might clean up the deaged/ back from the dead actors, but they’ll also add a CGI song and dance number featuring Sy Snootles. No one will have asked for it, but more stuff can only make the film better… right?

Not that I would wish death on anyone, but I do hope that Disney might actually be allowed to release a decent version of the originals when Lucas pegs it. My first intro to the films were the special editions in the reissue in the nineties, so I've never actually seen the original theatrical releases.
