Yeah, that was always my second favourite version (I do like the OG one). The K&D version gets a lot of play but theres a dub version of that which is an absolute speaker killer.

Naked Lunch - 8/10 maybe?! It's fucking weird, which is to be expected really. Cronenberg noir sci-fi semi-autobiography perhaps? Some amazing visuals including typewriter-cockroaches, a half-centipede-half-shagging-arse and a talking arsehole. There's lots of drugs as the story meanders and lingers. One to watch and take what you want from it. Probably worth reading (or at least reading about) the book. You kind of need to know about William Burroughs to some degree. That's why I haven't watched the film. I read the book in my late teens and was like, nah.

Ah man, there's going to be some bomb the bass played today i think.
Love that song. The whole album was decent too iirc.

On the Waterfront (1954)
This has always felt like one of the more meaningful gaps in my mental library so glad to have finally ticked it off.
This is a seriously heavyweight film. Absolutely everyone involved is one of the greatest of all time, from Kazan’s always astonishing eye to Brando’s and Eva Marie Saint’s game changing performances. Even the soundtrack is Leonard Bernstein. It is absolutely top top drawer in production values.
It’s also a great story and quite different to modern gangster films. Less about violence and more about power. I didn’t find the romance side so compelling but Eva Marie Saint is amazing. But the general dynamics of the different relationships are all very complex and interesting.
So yeah. It’s serious stuff on every level and well worth a couple of hours. One of the greats for good reason.
Something light next I think…

Lee J Cobb is also incredible in it (as he is in everything).
Need to give it a rewatch - it's been over a decade since I've seen it.

Guys and Dolls?
I’d quite like to watch Mutiny on the Bounty. The Hopkins/Gibson version was one of my favourites when I was a kid.
—-
Watched Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning: Part One the other evening. 7 dead reckonings out of 10. Great set-pieces - think the Venice scene was my favourite - but hampered because my friend watches everything with all the LG effects turned on and doesn’t seem to notice. When we watched Top Gun I was able to turn on movie mode when they stepped out, but they have reverted at some point. A lost cause.

That's most likely his best performance (from what I've seen) but I'd also recommend Call Northside 777. Went in blind and found it really gripping. Be warned - it's also fairly 'heavy' though!

I only know it off Dirtchamber Sessions (which I haven't listened to in way too long!) Need to see if I've still got a copy of it somewhere as anything on YouTube sounds like dogshit.

A Quiet Place 2, 5/10. Meh, thought it was pretty daft and contrived.

Totally Killer
If you enjoyed ‘what if Groundhog Day was a teen slasher film’ and ‘what if Freaky Friday was a teenage slasher film’, then you’ll love ‘what if Back to the Future’ was a teenage slasher film’.
It’s fine. Stupid, inoffensive and extremely tame horror wise, but it works. It’s on Prime.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the Don Siegel 1950s one)
Still holds up imo. Kevin McCarthy is great in the lead. And I like that it's a slowburn paranoia thriller rather than straight-up horror (though I love the Donald Sutherland movie too)
The ending sucks, unfortunately. I can see why studios didn't want the original 4th-wall-breaking thing with McCarthy yelling at the camera, but if the movie had ended there it would have been a masterpiece.
Still 8/10 though

Devil
Five people are trapped in a lift and one of them happens to be the devil
This is adapted from a story by M. Night Shyamalan and seeing him involved maybe raised my expectations a bit too much. I thought it might be a it more fucked up but it's a whodunit basically as you try and guess who the killer is with a few creepy moments thrown in. It's OK.

Synchronic Odd film. A couple of paramedics, played by Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan, come across some bizarre deaths related to a new designer drug, and when one of the paramedic's daughter goes missing the other starts to experiment with the drug to find what happened. Time travel. It's a drug that lets people time travel. It was enjoyable but strange. There's some trippy hallucinatory imagery when people take the drug, but the whole thing seems like a strange trip, it just seems off, then there's a fair bit of rumination about life, death, love, relationships, and is often sincere and other times seems played for laughs... it's just strange. 7/10, maybe? I dunno.

Killers of the Flower Moon.
Went into this knowing it was over 3 hours, deliberately got to the cinema late so didn't sit through 30 minutes of advert.
It's an interesting part of American history, one I knew nothing about, add in the stellar cast and it keeps you invested and interested, though I have to admit to checking my watch about 2.5 hours in. The trailer lead me expect it would build towards a violent crescendo (Tarantino style) but it keeps a steady pace from start to finish.
It's clearly a favourite with the critics but I don't think I would sit through a second viewing.

I dunno. This was a real misstep from them after their previous films. Endless is amazing and going back to their first after not knowing about it made it even better. Syncronic felt like they wasted a bigger budget on the leads and forgot about the story. Hopefully their latest is a return to form.

Watch Something in the Dirt. It's a proper "back to basics" thing for them, and it's great.

Yeah, watch all of them, they're fantastic little nuggets of indie sci-fi. They are masters at squeezing the most out of limited budgets.

I really like play-like films that are set in one very limited location.

The film before endless is basically one scene in the endless. Very clever stuff. Something in the dirt was okay, but felt a bit like a very good short film stretched to feature length
