Rorouni Kenshin 1-3 on Netflix
Killer dude decides he won't be killer dude no more.
It's structured like Star Wars, the first one is standalone then 2-3 are one film cut in half. Nice fights, some missteps (esp. the villain in part 1), some Japanese tropes and screaming girls.
Its main strength is the script. The story is not bad, but it's just put together so well and the story/action payoffs are spot-on. No eye rolling at the stupidity of it all at all.
I remember someone giving the 3 films a 7 in the other place and I mostly agree, but I just appreciate the solid construction so much I can't give anything less than an
8/10

The Burning (1980)
Knockoff of Friday the 13th from the Weinstein brothers who were trying to get in on the slasher craze of the 80s.
Its a hard film not to like (you can see why it might gain a bit of cult status) but is inferior to the film its trying to copy in all the important areas. The only thing it might do better is on the nudity scale.
6/10

The Burning is a fair bit gorier than the original F13 and is photographed quite a bit better. Some of the shots near the end of the woods bathed in evening sunlight and such are much more prettily shot, it's a better-made film.
Other than that, it's always amusing to watch Fisher Stevens having his fingers lopped off.

Oh dear, are there any good horror movies this season. I feel like it's been a while since a proper non-gory scary movie.

Titane - Tetsuo Body Hammer / 10 Absolutely loved this. Scratched my weird side (big Lynch fan) and was nice and brutal. Some scenes I proper winced, some I laughed, others I was jaw open thinking what the actual fuck. This is one to go in blind and not read about. I knew it was a little fucked up and saw the IMDb parents rating and that's it. Definitely recommended.

I was going to catch an early morning IMAX screening of Dune this morning, but ended up feeling shattered from an exhausting week and thought i'd probably fall asleep in the middle, so I went back to bed. So, after a long lie in I tried to find an alternative to watch over breakfast, and went with Lady Bloodfight. Same ballpark.
It has lots of Ladies in it. It has lots of Blood in it. It has lots of Fights in it. So excellent naming.
It's one of those Martial Arts Tournament movies, like Kickboxer or Bloodsport or the 800 other ones. I don't really know how you go abouot rating one of those, as all you really want are some decent fights and a likeable protagonist to root for. They all basically have the same plot.
This one manages those, and was just about the right balance of violent and fun, without being too unnecessarily gory.
10 Dunes out of 10 within it's oeuvre = 6.5
Though in a world where even the BBC seems to be showing MMA matches, I wonder if the idea of a no-holds barred tournament really seems so shocking these days.

I’m guessing you’re primarily referring to the scene where they’re changing into stillsuits. To me that came across as a moment where both of them silently acknowledge the change in roles where Paul becomes Duke and Lisan Al-Gaib and Jessica now has to learn from Paul, instead of being the teacher. It seemed way more like last glances at their old selves than it did some pervy glances. Yeah I didn’t read that from the scene. But in my defence name me one other film where people change in front of each other and don’t end up shagging. Not counting locker rooms in sports films. And even then.

Cross of Iron (1977)
Sam Peckinpah sole war film set as the Germans retreat from the Russians on the Eastern Front in 1943. James Coburn plays a toughened veteran (and recipient of the Iron Cross) clashing with an aristocrat captain looking for glory (without putting in the effort).
Plenty of action with the usual Peckinpah flair, but enough time is given for the characters and story to develop.
75/100

The talk of Bloodsport made me watch The Quest again. God it's fucking shit, but it's better than Bloodsport. The different fighting styles are more interesting, and unlike Bloodsport it features regular cutaways to Roger Moore winking and doing a thumbs-up. No cat noises, though. 4/10 Fuck off is this film better than Bloodsport. Crucially there are no Van Damme buns, no splits and no bad ADR. I'm a bit late with this reply but I also go for Bloodsport over The Quest. I like Paco, the Muay Thai fighter in Bloodsport. He was great. And a real Muay Thai champion if I recall, similar to the villain in Kickboxer. Is there any new, decent tournament-format martial art movies about?

Max Something or other and willy wonkas computerised mansion of doom.
Can't remember the exact title but it's close enough, it's a bit shit but it's only 90 minutes long and doesn't outstay its welcome.
I had been up for 36 hours when I watched it though so it might be worse than my sleep deprived brain thought.

...is absolutely the best war film of all time. Outside of maybe Patton, it's my absolute favourite. The ending is fucking brilliant. And they just made it up on the spot when they ran out of money! youtu.be/wf9UJR3-G98There's a sort-of sequel with Richard Burton as Steiner called Breakthrough m.imdb.com/title/tt0078320/But it's shit.

I always liked Kickboxer over Bloodsport. Lionheart, too. Van Damme made the same movie a bunch of times, improving on the formula with each version. It also gives me an excuse to share this mashup, which I always liked. youtu.be/ctnbJ5L3fUY

Halloween Kills You wouldn't think they could fuck something like this up would you. Oh boy. The kills were awesome though. I thought the first part was fairly mediocre. The shot of the three women standing over the burning Michael was cool, but outside of that I didn't really see what got people excited about it. Not that surprised to see the middle part is being met with middling response. Apparently the director is signed on to do a The Exorcist trilogy remake he has finished with Halloween. It's a bad idea noatter who does it, but seems even less promising after the results of a couple of Halloween films. Speaking of which, to answer the question of what horror is on this year, Vue is supposedly showing The Exorcist. Not seeing any times for my local yet, so not sure if they will be, but worth checking if you have a Vue nearby. Seen it before on the big screen, but such a great film I'll likely go again if they are showing it. Doesn't seem to be any other scares showing.

I think it’s just the way cinema has set our expectations now. It’s such a well established trope that if two attractive people of the opposite sex embark upon a perilous journey together they will inevitably end up romantically involved. While Speed is the obvious example, for some reason I can’t get 1995’s Fair Game out of my head, where this leads to a situation so passionate that Cindy Crawford has to shoot a baddy while William Baldwin’s dick is still inside her.

Sonic the Hedgehog - 7/10
Well that was surprising. I totally expected to hate it (but I had to watch it since it's on Prime for only two more weeks), but it was surprisingly watchable. Very slight, very forgettable, but just entertaining enough for its 90-minute run. Contrary to most other films I've watched recently, I never felt like "omg is it finally over soon". Biggest surprise: I didn't hate Jim Carrey in this at all.
MIB - 8.5/10
Another surprise because I kind of expected it to be ehh like most of the films I'm revisiting after having watched them as a teenager--cue Independence Day. But it holds up really well, it's a lot of fun.
MIB 2 - 4/10
Well that was just stupid. What is it with these crappy sequels? edit: another sequel failing to live up that has blatant Mercedes product placement. I blame Mercedes now and will never buy any of their products after watching JP2 and MIB2.

A Few Good Men 45/100
Couple of hammy performances and a couple of good performances. But it doesn't really stack up. Some orders can be obeyed some must be obeyed. Tom Cruise doesn't obey any. Demi Moore is fluff for Tom cruise to impress. All a bit shit really. Kevin Bacon is his usual quality self.

Honestly fuck off with an Exorcist remake. It's a pretty much perfectly made horror film. Exorcist 3 could definitely do with a modern remake though. It's got a Blumhouse production written by Jordan Peele all over it.

If they could do a remake of Exorcist 3 but with a creepy doll that doesn't move unless no-one's looking at it, and then suddenly it sticks its head in the top of the frame with a big EEHHHEUHHEHHHH sound, I think Blumhouse could nail it.

I have had Exorcist 3 on my list for the DVD delivery service I use for a very long time. I've heard from a couple of places that it is actually quite good, so looking forward to seeing it at some point.
Exorcist 2 is excrement though.

The French DispatchIt's Wes Anderson, but Wes Anderson turned up to 10. Several hours later, and I'm still mentally unpacking everything that's crammed in there. Forget all your expectations, this is on a completely different tangent, and I thought someone else had previously posted that they wondered what the hell they watched. I understand now. Artistic, nostalgic, escapist, sheer craftsmanship, a plethora of love letters, and enthralling from start to finish. Better than some good book adaptation doing the rounds by a mile/10.
