Blade Runner 2049 Third time watching it. An astonishing accomplishment of a film, especially when you consider how influential the original is. To go in a make a sequel to a film that absolutely didn't need one, and then have it surpass the original by lightyears.
It's probably my favourite film of all time.

Children of Men
Another fantastic film. So bloody grim though, especially these days. I can see why I don't hear people talking about it much, it's just a bit too much. But I've seen it getting on more and more lists of great sci-fi, post apocalyptic, films you didn't see, etc
In my head there were only two tracking shots, but the film is littered with them. Two of them really stand out, but I think all of them contribute to the down to earth feel.
A must see

Tonka, are you just watching films today Children of men needs a rewatch. One of those low key sci fi stories that are quite visceral and not actually dependent on crazy science CGI but definitely supported by strong action sequences and beats to underline the peril of it all.

I stil haven't managed to see the original yet but I have it on good authority that it's a cinematic triumph. If you can lower yourself to the indignity of Freeview, the Exorcist 3 is on the Horror Channel next week (which is where I watched it a while back).

Tonka, are you just watching films today Yep, home sick with a cold. I'm even thinking I might try an MCU film tomorrow. I hear Black Panther is among the better ones. Or maybe I'll just read a book.

I watched Dead Man's Letters (1986) yesterday. I had some difficulty finding a version with german or english subtitles, but after that was out of the way I did quite like it. It wasn't too long, just about 90 minutes. Which was probably good, because there just isn't a lot "happening" as you might expect from most movies. It's about how society continues on after a nuclear apocalypse. It's a soviet movie, but they apparently were trying to avoid making the impression that the movie takes place in the Soviet Union, probably because of censorship. A lot of it is about people discussing the human race and how it is responsible, if it deserves to go on and so on. Though what I found most impressive were the atmosphere out in the wasteland with everbody clambering around in their cumbersome protective suits and gas masks in the ruined landscape.
It's by Lopushansky, a pupil/disciple of Tarkovsky and it shows. I really liked Ugly Swans, so I wanted to finally watch something else by him.
Oh, rating: 8/10

THE FRENCH DISPATCH
Just back from the (empty) cinema seeing this.
It's Wes, on steroids. Henry Winkler is in it, and a women with pubic hair.
My head hurts/10

The Exorcist 3
Had it recorded and thought I'd give it a watch given the praise over the last few pages and it is indeed very good.
8/10

Mark Kermode said it was like trying to finish a box of fondant fancies in one go. Looks tempting but ultimately too much.

Fuck off is this film better than Bloodsport. Crucially there are no Van Damme buns, no splits and no bad ADR. I'm a bit late with this reply but I also go for Bloodsport over The Quest. I like Paco, the Muay Thai fighter in Bloodsport. He was great. And a real Muay Thai champion if I recall, similar to the villain in Kickboxer. Is there any new, decent tournament-format martial art movies about? I'd like to say the new Mortal Kombat film, but we can't have films with a simple and effective tournament format anymore, even when the source material calls for it.

The worst thing about that movie is that the bad guys absolutely clearly have the best fighters at the beginning, so if they just held the damn tournament they probably would have won by default.

Love and Monsters
The earth is run over by mutated lizards, insects and amphibians. Most people die, but some hole up in bunkers.
Seven years later and the protagonist decides to go from one camp to another because love.
It's a cheesy comic book kind of film, and I loved it.
Well worth seeing

Children of MenAnother fantastic film. Everyone keeps saying how good this film is, I just rewatched the trailer and it does indeed look good, but my overwhelming memory of actually watching it in the cinema when it came out is that it was a massive bag of shite and I was mostly bored by the whole thing.

Dune - 9/10
Yes it's amazing, I'm only docking it a point as its ends so abruptly. I was really getting into it and I had no idea 2 and half hours had passed, so I thought I probably had about 1/2 an hour left for a big finale, but no it just stopped....
Cannot wait for part 2
Pretty sure Dennis is the best director in the world at present

Also it might be the best film I've seen on Imax yet. Still grinning like a loon 24 hours later ๐

Ad Astra This cold I have is amazeballs, I end up loving every film I watch. I was in the mood for a slow, epic, hard sci-fi film, and Ad Astra neatly checks all those boxes. I loved it!
Brad Pitt plays the cold as fuck son of legendary astronaut that died in a failed misson to find life in the universe. Then Brad Pitt has to go across our solar system, mumbling to himself. Things evolve at a glacial pace and it's amazing!
Minor niggle that every "serious" space film is the same. Strong echoes of 2001 and that Danny Boyle one. Still thinking I should watch some marvel shite just to see if I end up liking that too.
For fans of the genre

I really liked Ad Astra but I don't know if it's a hard SF film, it falls apart if you start to pick at it too much. It's more a family drama dressed up in space gear.

Last Night in Soho
London can be a lot.
The first half of this is really promising. It has plenty of Edgar Wrightโs flair for editing and The central conceit is very relatable - the feeling of starting out somewhere new and not feeling you belong, or feeling maybe you belong in another time. Of course, people who say that are always cherry picking the best bits from those other timesโฆ and that message comes across loud and clear in a number of very cleverly put together scenes.
So itโs bitterly disappointing then that the second half veers off that course and becomes a case of running around screaming because ghosts. Itโs never really scary, despite jump scares, and various bits were clearly thrown in because they might look cool or add peril but are then immediately disregarded. An overwrought final act goes on way too long, and when the ending does arrive itโs simplistic to the point of being a bit insulting.
A shame it doesnโt live up to any of its initial promise, but actually the first half is so good I can almost recommend based on that alone. And even with the crap second half itโs probably one of the better horror films if you want a trip to the cinema this Halloween - and if youโre going to get anything out of it, it does need to be seen at the cinema. It will lose too much on a small screen.
6/10

Also, new bugbear in films: People donโt make coughing noises when they throw up. What does cinema have against wretching and heaving?

The thing that annoys me most in film (and TV) is no one ever ends a phone call properly, they all just hang up on each other.
Would one saying โthanks, byeโ be that hard?
