Just finished The Mountain Between Us. That's getting a straight 2/10 because it was really, really shit. That's a point for the plane crash (spoiler!) and another for the dog.

Gladiator - 9/10
An all time classic, with so many quotable lines. Loved every minute, even if it had to be split over two evenings.
Titane - WTF/10
It was pretty good I guess, but just what the actual fuck?... Probably not something I'd put on for the other poster's Catholic mum.

Bad Timing (1980)
You either love these idiosyncratic Nic Roeg films or you don't. Art Garfunkel is a stiff academic with bad hair who becomes enamoured with sultry party girl Theresa Russell (and she is incredibly sultry) and bad things ensue, mostly notably the titular bad timing.
The film is mostly told in flashback and goes all over the place in terms of narrative causality, which is what it's famous for, since it's about fractured time and fractured psyches. It's set in Vienna, so the shadow of Freudian psychotherapy hangs heavy over it.
Harvey Keitel has a wicked mullet in it.
I love the dreaminess of Roeg's films of this vintage - The Man Who Fell To Earth, which shares the shame kooky sense of chronology, Don't Look Now and Eureka.
It's a great if slightly disturbing film, and Theresa Russell is incredibly sexy in it, which becomes problematic when, well, get to the end. There's some bad timing in more ways than the obvious.
8/10.

the only things I remember about this are Theresa Russell and Art's hair. But it was a long time ago. Don't Look Now is great. They don't really make films like those anymore. Taken 4/10 Never seen it before. I don't get it. How did this do well? Mediocre in almost any way you look at it with one exeption: 3.5 of the 4 points for Holly Valance. In that case, don't watch the 800 other similar films which it spawned, which are all far worse. You'd have to go into negative scores if you're starting from 4. Personally, I remember it being pretty good. Definitely better than I expected it to be. I think that's why it did so well. It had a kind of relentless pace and tension.

I agree with your score. A couple of bits made me feel a little bit sick

Now you mention middle aged man fantasy, here's another: Nobody 4/10 Yeah I found this a strange. derivative, no surprises piece of wish fulfilment for the actor. Not exactly sure what critics and public are seeing in it - I think it's just the Odenkirk halo effect.

After Hours
I've always seen it as a lesser film in Scorsese's golden period, but that's purely because it felt like an exercise in technique, and the director letting himself off the auteur hook for 6 months.
I enjoy it a lot more now. It's more laid back than I remember.

Dune
Itās a Sci-fi at its most heavy and meaty. And for me at least, itās most impenetrable.
I went in with only vague recollections of the Lynch adaptation and playing Dune II on the Amiga back in the day so I knew a bit about spice, worms, the houses and so on but not much else. Denis Villeneuve nails the look and sound of the film - easily as good as Blade Runner 2049 - and I can imagine anyone who loves the original novels would be thrilled at how finally weāre at the point where someone can faithfully bring the world to life.
The problem for me was while I was trying to keep up with the story and get a handle on who everyone was I found I wasnāt connecting to any of it. It can be hard work and thereās little in the way of relief - itās very serious stuff. Quite befitting of a epic set on a desert planet, itās incredibly dry.
I kind of wish it had been a mini-series instead of a film, so I could have taken my time going through and digesting at my own pace rather than ploughing through it all in one sitting. I feel like I need to watch it again now Iāve got a handle on it and can probably appreciate the shifting alliances and motivations more. Will review again when the second film comes out and I feel like it will cast it in a better light.
But twist my arm now and Iāll say 7/10
(Probably didnāt help the filmās cause that the cinema I saw it in had terrible soundproofing so quiet scenes had snippets of pop songs from the lobby playing in the background. )

The Lost boys
Watched it with my eldest daughter last night. Itās pretty much the perfect YA 80s horror comedy. No wasted scenes, great soundtrack, great Over the top acting, and stacked full with iconic scenes. My daughter loved it too so itās stood the test of time really well.

I love Gladiator and have seen it many times, bit have to admit I now skip the "talking" bits. If there's not a sword in sight, I'll far forward. The Zulu sound grab still works for me every time.

I loved Lost Boys as a kid, had the poster on my bedroom wall, had the soundtrack on cassette, went to a halloween party dressed as Kiefer Sutherland, etc... Had a big crush on Jamie Gertz. I wonder what age I was when I saw it. I'd have been 11 when it came out, but I didn't see it in cinemas and it took much longer for movies to come to tv/video in those days.

Thanos had some good arguments. The alien is the real hero of Alien. I don't know which species is worse. You don't see them fucking each other over for a goddamn percentage Also Thanos did nothing wrong

Dune is like a beautiful lady, looks hot, great conversion throughout the meal, buy a condom in the bog, end up going home alone.

Venom - Let there be Carnage.
Not a great film, but pretty decent for a CGI romp. Whilst a comic book reader, Venom is a character I havenāt really followed, but I felt it was too reliant on humour, when it worked better in the darker moments. Harrelson was brilliant. He really lifted this film up, so it is getting an extra point just for that.
8/10.

The Last Starfighter - 6/10 Still enjoyable, but nowhere near as cool as 8 year old me remembers it being The 80s computer effects look quite nifty in 4k though.

Taken is a past-their-prime middle-aged man's fantasy film I feel this should be its own genre, it's everywhere! I liked The Equalizer with Denzel Washington...

They better greenlight part 2, or many raging stiffies will be left unquenched. Many will be forced to go into the seedier parts of town, and blow their loads into Star Wars, Mass Effect, or even Jupiter Ascending.

The Card Counter 9/10. Really good. Paul Schrader delivered another excellent film here. As someone who visits Las Vegas at least once a year for work, I thought the whole depressing vibe of those casinoās was really well done. I thought his previous, First Reformed was also very good. An director with something interesting to say. No Sudden Move 5/10. Cold and aloof, lacks drama, too many plot-lines. I used to rate Soderbergh pretty highly but it has been a long time since he did anything good. Dune 8/10. I liked it, very good book adaptation. Could have been 15 min shorter for me, but I was the only one in our company who thought so. Cinematography peeve: I thought the desert didnāt look that hot

I thought the desert didnāt look that hot I know what you mean. Although they kept going on about it so I took their word for it. People could have looked scabbier, thatās for sure. Also, am I weird or was I picking up on weird sexual energy between Paul and his sexy pregnant witch mum?

I think she's pretty psyched, if Paul really is the Kwisatz Haderach, she's basically The Virgin Mary, so the head of the female imperial power.[/spoiler>

Isn't there whole witch deal about trying to control genetics to make the chosen one? It'd be pretty easy to control if... you know... you kept it in the family.

Yeah, I think youāve been watching too much stepmom porn. Paul and Jessica have a complex relationship but itās absolutely not incestual.

Iām guessing youāre primarily referring to the scene where theyāre changing into stillsuits. To me that came across as a moment where both of them silently acknowledge the change in roles where Paul becomes Duke and Lisan Al-Gaib and Jessica now has to learn from Paul, instead of being the teacher. It seemed way more like last glances at their old selves than it did some pervy glances.

Started watching Halloween 2018 last night and... it's not the best start showing your monster unmasked at the beginning of the film and just walking around streets in the open holding a knife with kid running all over the place. The thing with the teeth in the bathroom seemed overly sadistic as well, plus there's the slightly grating modern humour elements. Is it worth persevering/watching Halloween Kills?
Jamie Lee going all Sarah Connor feels off as well. There's just no atmosphere
