Bruce Willis is shite in just about everything he does now. Last films of his I saw was Death Wish.

Dune. Probably the best faithful book adaption I have ever seen. (As opposed to something like the book eg lord of the rings this is the book itself scene by scene.) Unbelievably beautiful and stunning movie, soundtrack is awesome. Watched it at the imax and may do so again. 10/10 I agree. I really loved it the more I think about it. It was a real treat, like seeing the LotR films for the first time. One thing about IMAX: the music was so loud in places it was hard to hear some of the whispered dialogue - did you find the same?

I found it pretty good. We were exactly in the middle at the back though. I imagine depending where you sit though may affect the mix though.

I was flicking through Freeview (remember that?) and The Happening was on some channel called Great! Movies so I'm now watching it. Marky Mark's performance may be the worst there has ever been in a major studio film ever. I'm struggling to think of anything worse. SUGGESTIONS BELOW. I've watched some stinkers recently but this and Geostorm are well up there with the worst movies I've ever seen. As it's already been said, The Happening is just odd to the point its mind blowing almost in how had it is, everyone involved looks ashamed of themselves.

Take that mask off, so that I can slap you better! Sure, it's pretty cheesy, but it also doesn't take itself seriously most of the time and it's tonally consistent.
It seems to be a polarising movie, the Wikipedia article mentions how critics at the time noted it was one of the most divisive movies they'd seen, people either loving or loathing it. Not saying I hold the truth, just that I'm firmly in the latter camp. It just doesn't work for me at all, especially when it's attempting humour. Yeah, don't get me wrong, it's easy to understand that that kind of extreme approach wouldn't sit well with a lot of people.

I actually quite like it, certain scenes are really quite tense/eerie while others border on comedy but yes it's very hard to get past those many close ups.

The best bit is when the old lady is suspicious of him and he's trying to deny that they're dangerous.
Actually, is that the bit the picture is from? It's been ages since I saw it.

Everyone and everything in that film is bad. Zoey Deschanel was good in one film (and even then she had to be carried through the whole thing by Joseph Gordon Levett) but in hindsight we can all agree she was a failed attempt at putting a fringe in a leading role.

Re: the Fifth Element, I think the actual point that defines whether you will enjoy or hate the film is the blue alien that sings house / techno / opera. And is somehow actually a major plot point. If you can get through that without giving up you’ll be on board for anything else.
It has to be said the costume direction is superb.

Argh, I'm meant to be seeing Dune on Sunday at the IMAX but I'm having second thoughts what with all the covids going around. All these positive reports aren't making that any easier. Book early morning showings. We've seen A Quiet Place 2 and Bond at 10.30am showings are there's hardly anyone in there. And the others that are there are similar mindset and not constant rustling and phone checking. Then it's a perfect time after it's finished to get lunch somewhere.

Venom 2 Can't believe how quickly it went in. Felt short. Think I preferred the first one, but this one had a better bad guy and the action was better. Enjoyable, love Tom Hardy. 7/10
I seen The happening at the cinema when it first came out. Awful, one if the worst. Loads of people walked out.

Re: the Fifth Element, I think the actual point that defines whether you will enjoy or hate the film is the blue alien that sings house / techno / opera. And is somehow actually a major plot point. If you can get through that without giving up you’ll be on board for anything else. I had that song on my MP3 player, so I guess I know which side i'm on. --- Watched Venom 1 since it was streaming. It's ok I guess. I'd declined to watch it for ages, as I couldn't see how it could be any good. And it was basically what I expected. But it was well acted enough that it wasn't bad. The plot has enough holes to fly a few space shuttles through, and there were a couple of jumps where it was clear they'd cut something out. Tom Hardy's acting was, er, unique enough that he at least made a very generic origin story a bit more interesting. He was kinda channeling Nic Cage at points though. Riz Ahmed was good with what he had to work with, and I approve of the idea that Zuckerberg and Bezos are the new Russians, but his character just made no sense. Michelle Williams went from generic love interest to being more interesting. But the main thing that hamstrung it from being a top level superhero movie was that Venom is an indestructible cgi-fest monster with ill-defined powers, meaning that most of the action scenes devolved into dull cgi goo fighting humans who posed no threat to it, or other cgi goo in transformers-level incomprehensible 'action'. There was some point in the middle there somewhere where I thought it was going to end up surprisingly great, but then it just devolved into a slightly dull mess at the end. 6 / 10 I guess. I can't say I'm all that interested in the sequel, as I imagine that'll be more of the same, and the bad guy appears to be the same bad guy from this movie, but this time red.

Rewatched Men in Black because there was not a lot else on. It's aged incredibly well. The late 90s CGI is dodgy now but the practical effects hold up, and it's got this nuanced simplicity to it that also manages to not treat its audience like idiots. Also Vincent D'Onofrio does some superb physical acting. MiB2 was awful at the time so I imagine that doesn't hold up at all. Will Smith was stuck in "I'm a serious actor and don't have time for this comedy action stuff" mode, among other problems. MiB3 was ok, but almost entirely due to Josh Brolin's spot-on TLJ impression. MiB International was just shit. MIB's Agent K speech - you know the one - just elevates that film. It manages to sum up the importance of having an open mind and the frailties of human stupidity in 30 seconds, which comes totally out of left field for a buddy comedy about aliens. Dialogue-wise, it's a fucking hard film to beat. MIB3 does make me chuckle with the joke where J asks Josh Brolin how old he is - 29.

Tomb Raider - the newest one It’s just really boring. 3/10 I played the game, and found it a better film that the film. Just for the cutscenes alone. There's that bit where Lara parachutes through the trees which was a complete copy from the game, down to the fall animation.

I watched The Lion King tonight for the first time. The 1994 one, that is. I had been lead to belive throughout the past 27 years that this was some sort of timeless masterpiece, so my expectations were pretty high. A couple of months ago a friend basically called me a philistine weirdo when I told her I had never seen it. It's okay. The story is hilariously simple, but it's a kid's movie so it gets a pass on that. It's not all that impressively animated, there are lots of older Disney movies I think look better. The score is pretty good but I didn't like most of the musical numbers (probably not helped by the fact I've heard all of the songs so many times despite never seeing the movie). So, yeah, it's okay. (Do I have to give a score? I give it a narwhal and two otters out of four basking sharks and an elk with false teeth.) Good to see some familiar faces around here.
I think the best Disney film from that era is bound to be Hercules.

I liked the Valerian & Laureline comics those films spawned from, but I don't think either film is any good. I think it's all art design that makes them impressive. At least The Fifth Element had Chris Tucker as Space Prince, and pre-Resi Milla Jovovich kung fuing aliens, but otherwise, that was it. Valerian had great visuals but no likable characters. And the lead, Valerian was terribly miscast. The character is designed like a Gregory Peck or Ben Affleck type (more like the former, given the comic's debut). But they cast what looks like a 15 year old, with no charisma or acting ability whatsoever. The CG is gorgeous though. I kind of wanted to buy the UHD Blu-Ray when it reached home video just as a 4K HDR showpiece. True, the leads were significantly older in the comics, but I liked Cara Delevigne. Valerian also has Ethan Hawke doing his thing, and Rihanna as a singer getting mistreated by bad men (imagine that could happen...). Bruce Willis is shite in just about everything he does now. Last films of his I saw was Death Wish. Watch The Fifth Element! Re: the Fifth Element It has to be said the costume direction is superb. Zorg!

Cara and Rihanna were great, I'll grant you that. The film as whole was just a bore though.

Think we got half way through watching Valerian and decided to save the second half for another night, then just never bothered finishing it. If its a film I was enjoying I would've just finished it on my own, but meh...
Fifth Element is an absolute classic mind you.

Black Widow. Nearly turned it off at the half way mark. Feels like a wasted couple of hours to be honest. Found it a bit dull and forgettable.

I can see how someone could dislike The Fifth Element but rating it 2/10 is just plain wrong. Take a long earnest look at yourself in the mirror.
Free Guy 4/10
Not very entertaining and surprisingly unfunny.
Taken 4/10
Never seen it before. I don't get it. How did this do well? Mediocre in almost any way you look at it with one exeption: 3.5 of the 4 points for Holly Valance.

Taken is a past-their-prime middle-aged man's fantasy film (believe me, I can relate) which is where it found its audience. Liam can have his Kneesgone and still beat up guys 30 years younger than him.
It's also where the aforementioned Luc Besson has made his money for the past two decades. Writing and producing shit cheapish action films.
