Oh yeah. In the comics its so dumb they have to come up with an even dumber story to blast it out of existence.

Yeah, I read Civil War when I wasn't well-versed in the history of the Marvel Universe so I didn't realise HOW much the characters were just thrown under the bus to service the story. It's a bit ridiculous just how villainous they made Tony and Reed.
Similar thing to Identity Crisis and Countdown at DC.

I didn’t really buy that Peter would join Stark’s sell outs on the registration side to begin with 'Hello impressionable teenager, I am the man you hero worship. Would you like to join our famous super team?' I dont think its that much of a stretch. And I might be reading too much into it but I think its one of the reasons Tony feels so bad when he gets dusted. He dragged him into it. That was my take, and Peter idolised Tony as his nerd hero, as well as a superhero.

The Fifth Element - 2/10
Ugh.
Jurassic Park 2 - 4/10
Well it takes the horror and action moments of JP and stretches that into a 2-hour film, ditching everything else like wonder, imagination, ethical/philosophical discussion, etc. Also, humans behave in the stupidest and most implausible ways just to keep the scary scenes going. And then then it gets completely ridiculous with stuff like the kid's gymnastics scene.
I believe Spielberg himself was ashamed of it. As he should be.

I thought the lost world was pretty solid right up until the kids Olympics and then TRex in the City. Apparently the original end to the film was supposed to be the bird cage scene from JP3, then Spielberg decided he wanted a Godzilla/King Kong style monster in the city type ending. It just doesn't work and understandably feels really disjointed.

Apart from those two bits and some characters being streamlined (only one kid instead of two etc) then I remember it being fairly faithful to the novel. Slightly moreso than JP1 anyway.
Although I’ve only read it once and that was before the film came out.

Welp, all this talk of Spidermans and I was in a used bookshop and they had a spiderman 2 dvd for about a quid, so what the heck. Just have to decide if the kids are old enough for Spiderman 1 yet. I believe Spielberg himself was ashamed of it. As he should be. I thought the lost world was pretty solid right up until the kids Olympics and then T Rex in the City. Apparently the original end to the film was supposed to be the bird cage scene from JP3, then Spielberg decided he wanted a Godzilla/King Kong style monster in the city type ending. It just doesn't work and understandably feels really disjointed. Me too. The breaking glass scene in the falling truck was great. Dumb ending though. I got distracted by the MCU there, I only came on here to say that I watched Kate on Netflix the other night, and it's really good fun. Plot and story are nothing special (basically DOA meets John Wick), but Mary Elizabeth Winstead gives a great central performance and the action scenes are really meaty and well-shot, with some terrific fight work. Winstead looks like she would make a great Ripley if they ever foolishly rebooted Alien. And there's a bit where she stabs a guy in the chin and the blade comes out his nose, it's terrific. Anyway: YMMV out of ten. Sounds cool. Aha, she's the one out of 10 Cloverfield Lane... I keep mixing her up with Mackenzie Davis for some reason, who's the one out of Dark Fate. She'd be a good Ripley too.

With The Fifth Element, you do have to get around Luc Besson's incredibly childish (rather than childlike) approach to dialogue and plot. It was based on a story he wrote when he was a kid, but it's still either incredibly annoying or endearing. I think it gets by on its art direction and costume design, but as a film it's ick.
See Valerian as an example of something that's essentially the same, but everyone hated this time around.

I like Valerian too.
Admittedly for both its all about letting the visuals wash over me because so few films do that kind of big colourful comic book sci-fi world as well.

Dune - at least a 9
Watched it in IMAX and was spectacular. Denis has directed the shit out of it. Cast is great. Not read the books, but love the way the factions and politics is woven together. Recommnndd.

The story is based on hamlet, are you saying Shakespeare us hilariously simple I mean, structurally yes, most of the time. (I haven't seen or read all Shakespeare plays, for the record). I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing, but you need something more - characters or humour or cleverness or great art or whatever. The Lion King only really has the musical numbers to flesh things out, and if you like them it's probably great but I just didn't.

I liked the Valerian & Laureline comics those films spawned from, but I don't think either film is any good. I think it's all art design that makes them impressive. At least The Fifth Element had Chris Tucker as Space Prince, and pre-Resi Milla Jovovich kung fuing aliens, but otherwise, that was it. Valerian had great visuals but no likable characters. And the lead, Valerian was terribly miscast. The character is designed like a Gregory Peck or Ben Affleck type (more like the former, given the comic's debut). But they cast what looks like a 15 year old, with no charisma or acting ability whatsoever. The CG is gorgeous though. I kind of wanted to buy the UHD Blu-Ray when it reached home video just as a 4K HDR showpiece.

Rewatched Men in Black because there was not a lot else on. It's aged incredibly well. The late 90s CGI is dodgy now but the practical effects hold up, and it's got this nuanced simplicity to it that also manages to not treat its audience like idiots. Also Vincent D'Onofrio does some superb physical acting.
MiB2 was awful at the time so I imagine that doesn't hold up at all. Will Smith was stuck in "I'm a serious actor and don't have time for this comedy action stuff" mode, among other problems. MiB3 was ok, but almost entirely due to Josh Brolin's spot-on TLJ impression. MiB International was just shit.

It helps Men in Black had the very best special makeup guy in the world (Rick Baker) and that he talked them into doing so much practically. As the sequels went on they did more and more with CGI. I don't think it's an improvement.

The Fifth Element - 2/10Ugh. Take that mask off, so that I can slap you better!
Sure, it's pretty cheesy, but it also doesn't take itself seriously most of the time and it's tonally consistent.

I was flicking through Freeview (remember that?) and The Happening was on some channel called Great! Movies so I'm now watching it. Marky Mark's performance may be the worst there has ever been in a major studio film ever. I'm struggling to think of anything worse. SUGGESTIONS BELOW.

To be fair a lot of it must be down to direction as every single actor in it is fucking dreadful. Such a weird film.

Kendall from Succession has just turned up as the nervous army guy. I got quite excited as it's the first time I've seen him in anything else but I've decided to turn it off now because he shot himself and Marky Mark did his "won't somebody just give me a second" meme.

Dune.
Probably the best faithful book adaption I have ever seen. (As opposed to something like the book eg lord of the rings this is the book itself scene by scene.) Unbelievably beautiful and stunning movie, soundtrack is awesome. Watched it at the imax and may do so again.
10/10

Argh, I'm meant to be seeing Dune on Sunday at the IMAX but I'm having second thoughts what with all the covids going around. All these positive reports aren't making that any easier.

Surprisingly dramatic and tense film considering you know what happened.

It seems to be a polarising movie, the Wikipedia article mentions how critics at the time noted it was one of the most divisive movies they'd seen, people either loving or loathing it. Not saying I hold the truth, just that I'm firmly in the latter camp. It just doesn't work for me at all, especially when it's attempting humour.

If I can suggest another contender for worst lead actor in a recentish major movie, it would be Daisy Ridley.
Just completely fucking wooden, every line reading flat or haughty or forced.
She must thank her lucky stars she's got a good agent.
