Borderlands (someone's uploaded it to YouTube) - 5/10
It wasn't terrible in a brain-off kinda way. I've not played the games except for maybe an hour or so of the 1st, so can't comment on the casting (if they're established characters?) but it was okay for a time-waster, not as bad as I was expecting.
I think it might have worked better as an OTT stylised animated feature or series though.

I kind of want to check it out in a “how bad can it possibly be?” Sort of way. There are lists from people I trust saying it’s worse than Alone in the Dark and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation - and I really struggle to believe anything can limbo under that bar.

I just found it a forgettable, cookie cutter really. If you've got a tolerance for such things it might be worth a watch. Low expectations and all that.

AfrAId in a cinema The film starts with something really horrific an AI created video with a really irritating song being watched by a kid on her iPad. Things don't go too well for that family shortly afterwards when the parents decide they need to shut down the house AI system as it seems to be spying on them all the time. Cut to John Cho and Katherine Waterson as parents of three online obsessed kids and what's going on in their lives. Curtis (Cho) works in marketing and is given the task of promoting AIA an incredibly intelligent AI device that he's volunteered into having in his own home. AIA is very much not Alexa "I hate that bitch" she says early on and while she seems useful this is a Blumhouse film so she becomes a bit of a problem. It's nothing too surprising in how it goes for the family but there's more going on with the inventing company than you at first thought. Perfectly watchable low budget horror from Jason Blum, certainly not as bad as the 19% Rotten Tomatoes score suggests but probably worth waiting for streaming than rushing to the cinema if you don't have a subscription. The brief mid-credits scene is typical YouTuber crap but she really doesn't like being called Super Alexa.

Alan: Romulus
I can't recall what people thought of it here, but personally I enjoyed it. It's not going to trouble Alan or Alans, but I enjoyed it more than Resurrection or Covenant (which isn't exactly a high bar).
There are some good sequences, but it kind of gets a bit silly towards the end.
It approached an 8 in places and dropped to a 6 in others, so I'll split the difference and say 7/10 I guess.

I've done an M. Night Shyamalan double bill so you don't have to (unless you want to of course...)
A Knock at the Cabin - 6.5/10 Starts off brilliantly, has a great premise and Dave Bautista is excellent, it just runs out of steam towards the end and the payoff isn't the best. Worth a watch though as its clearly had a lot of love put into it and its a more serious Shyamalan movie.
Trap - 7/10 If you don't mind watching a 1 hour promotional movie for his (very talented) daughters singing career and turn your brain off re. the plot, its actually really entertaining. Josh Harnett is brilliant in it too, with just the right amount of menace and charm. Turn your brain off and you will enjoy.

Salt is worth watching, still waiting for the Pepper sequel. Not sure it's happening.

The Count of Monte Cristo, 2024 (subtitled) 7/10, at a Cineworld cinema
I'm a big fan of "French Cinema", having enjoyed episodes 1 and 2 of The Three Musketeers.
It's looooong 178mins. It really slows down and gets complicated in the final third, and I thought it was the writers trying to pad out the story, bringing some twists where none were really necessary, but having read the full plot on Wikipedia its obvious that is unfair, and they were trying to simplify it.
Other points of note - scheduled screening time of 19.40, I arrived at 19.52 and it had already started. There were only 2 other people in there with me, so at a suitable quiet point I turned round and shouted at them if I'd missed anything.

Borderlands (indeed, someone uploaded it to Youtube and somehow it's still there)
It's bad, but I agree that it's not quite the worst thing ever as critics make you believe. It's a bunch of vapid nonsense with lame humour and no reason to exist--so nothing like what you'd expect from something with the Borderlands name on it--but I could breeze through in one sitting without begging for my suffering to end, so definitely not the worst I've seen.
But still an uninteresting waste of time.
4/10

I'm watching it now and it's pretty bad. It looks quite cheap too. I'm glad that I didn't pay for it.
Edit: yeah that was awful. Who was it on here who was claiming it was actually good and there was some kind of critic pile on? It deserved all of all terrible reviews. One positive it ended just on 90 minutes, thank God.

Me. I didn't say it was good, I said it was better than Black Panther 2. I stand by that claim.
I rated it 6.5.

I mean fair enough your entitled your opinions. I'm struggling to see how this tripe was more entertaining than BP2 but again your opinion.

Underwater (disney+)
This was in the recommendations after every Alien film I watched on Disney+ and it was the only film that wasn’t an Alien or Predator one there.
Its a solid little film. It does wear its visual influences all over its face (Alien and Abyss) but it does what it does well. It looks good, the atmosphere is tense, there’s some mystery to what’s going on. Its nice to see a film take a chunky, working joe, used-future aesthetic and have a back to basics approach to the plot.
Plus its only about 90 minutes which is vanishingly rare for a film released in the 2020s.
I’d recommend it if you’re not burnt out on this sort of thing yet. There aren’t really enough deep sea hard sci-fi films.

I didn’t think BP2 was bad but I also can’t remember much from it past the opening bit. Then again I was on paternity leave and given the lack of sleep it’s amazing I even remember putting it on.

I don't care if they're comic accurate but those fucking wings on the big bad's feet looked fucking stupid.

It’s amazing the things they don’t choose to change to keep things comic accurate. I’m thinking the big post-credits reveal of Roy Kent after Thor: Love and Thunder - putting the final exclamation point on two hours of pure excrement.
Or whatever the fuck Harry Styles was supposed to be in The Eternals. Or anything in the Eternals for that matter.

I find that particular recent period of the MCU baffling where it felt like there was a concerned effort to be unironically "hello fellow kids". I know who Harry Styles character is but it was done for what I only assume to be stunt casting because someone said he's hot right now, sane with the Hercules appearance, oh Ted Lasso, people loved that.

The women do have to wear really small pants when they get into their space suit looking diving gear for ‘reasons’ so it could be part of a shared universe with Alien in that regard I suppose

Underwater is certainly a pretty good Alien/Abyss rip off, worth watching and Kristen Stewart does a good job.

Its not a direct comparison as they’re not like for like films but in the Alien-aesthetic adjacent stakes its much better than Life was.

Disney's Jungle Book (1967)
We're starting to find films the boy can watch and this perfect. Only an hour long and packed with great songs and characters that he can identify. It also looks great, and the fairly simple style means he's actually able to focus. It's a real shame Disney don't make films like this anymore. In fact I'm not sure anyone does and CGI really isn't a good substitute.
9/10
I can't wait to be able to introduce more of the classics to him.

I love the end of Underwater. The reveal is ace. I really like that nothing is explained. Its just a bad situation happening to people who have to deal with it. I feel like more films could do with retaining a bit of mystery like that.

The Deliverance- if you only watch one unbelievably boring exorcist movie this year make sure it’s this one. It’s slightly better than that piece of shit that was released to cash in on The Popes Exorcist. im not usually a fan of ‘fantasy about fantasy’ stuff but there was a brief, shining moment where the movie dithers about whether the family is possessed or if the mum is just crazy which was ok and would have made for a much better movie but then it just turns into a braindead The Exorcist after a box of Valium 3/10
