Speaking of blights on human civilisation... Taken. What a racist, anti-travel, pro-U2 piece of excrement that movie is. I never got the love for this film. Neeson isn't even that good in it, his delivery of the "I'll find you" thing is really not all that good. The action is like a Bourne movie minus the excitement. The most entertaining thing about it is how massively Francophobic it is despite being a French production.

Taken does a great job setting up a high stakes situation with a tense time limit and then basically never letting up. It's hardly high art, but iirc it being a pretty good ride. Disney's Jungle Book (1967) We're starting to find films the boy can watch and this perfect. Only an hour long and packed with great songs and characters that he can identify. It also looks great, and the fairly simple style means he's actually able to focus. It's a real shame Disney don't make films like this anymore. In fact I'm not sure anyone does and CGI really isn't a good substitute. 9/10 I can't wait to be able to introduce more of the classics to him. Best Disney movie!

All cheerleaders die (Tubi)
For a while I thought this was going to be a bit of a hidden gem, but it gets a bit too tangled up in it's own feet.
The initial setup is interesting and it keeps going in directions I didn't really expect, but that means it never really settles down and tells it's story in a satisfying way.
I was largely rooting for the murderous cheerleaders, but the bad guy, while a doing a good dislikeable misogynist jock, seemed far too chill about the idea of being hunted by magic undead. Didn't really seem to know what to do with its badass superpowered chearleaders though, as they almost immediately went back to being chased etc..
Not overly gory, and a couple of good laughs though. Could have been so much better.
Now that's how you dump a guy / 10

It's xenophobic in general imo, to the point of even discouraging travel to other countries. Neeson is like "don't go to Europe, bad things happen there, also why do you like U2 so much", and he's right! She gets off the plane and is *immediately* targeted for sex slavery. Doesn't even get to do any sightseeing.

Apart from Schindler's List, Neeson is a big pile of dog wank in everything he's ever done.
* wrong thread? Probably the unpopular opinion thread is the one for me

Beetlejuice
Rewatched this because of the upcoming sequel. The plot is kinda shambles, like they didn't really know where they wanted to go with the movie. But hey, it has some great gags and lots of heart. And at less than 90 minutes, it just flies by without ever feeling boring. Tim Burton at his best? I think Nightmare Before Christmas is still my favorite movie of his, but this one's close.
8/10
Think I might go and catch the new one in the weekend, if reviews are good.

Scream 5 - 9/10
Me and the eldest really enjoyed this, its not quite at the level of Scream 1 and 4, but I reckon its next best after them. Really good mix of old and new, the social commentary and meta is paired back a bit but its still very clever. One thing that really stuck out was how graphical some of the kills were compared to the first 4, its properly gruesome in parts.
Looking forward to 6

Starve Acre - 7.5/10
Tight little British folk horror with one of the Doctor Whos and Galadriel as a bereaved couple with a bit of the good ol' occult in the mix. Fittingly, reminded me quite a lot of Hobb's Barrow which I played recently. Imagine it will soon disappear without a trace, but definitely worth a watch when it inevitably pops up on streaming services and whatnot.

Cutter's Way (Blu-ray) - 4/5
Early 80s noir starring Jeff Bridges and John Heard. The latter is a drunken eyepatch wearing amputee and gives an absolutely barn-storming performance. It's crazy and dark, but has a really tender heart.
The Net (NETflix) - 3/5
I really enjoyed this. The opening 30 minutes are great, particularly when Sandra Bullock orders a pizza on the internet. The actual plot and how it unfolds is by the by. Bullock could make anything work and she's brilliant throughout. Seeing 90s computer hardware and websites made me so nostalgic. The film culminates at some kind of computer expo and I was barely able to concentrate on the plot as I was too busy cooing at all the PCs in the background.
U.S. Marshals (Netflix) - 2/5
A lousy follow-up to The Fugitive. Passable in its own right.
Inside Out 2 (Cinema) - 3.5/5
Enjoyable, although it feels very lightweight in comparison to the first for some reason. Handles the themes of puberty, particularly anxiety really well and its great that kids have such a mainstream film to help them deal with that stuff! Maya Hawke was perfect as Anxiety.

Arcadian
Coming of Age / Horror film. In some post apocalyptic world monsters come out at night, and the film follows some survivors who are living on farms and homesteads.
It's fine, Nicholas Cage plays the dad and gives a decent performance, the other characters are also played well enough.
Monsters are quite creative.
Entire thing is shot with a shaky cam aesthetic, I guess in an attempt to give it a sense of realism and the dark scenes are very dark, to the point where it's hard to really see what's happening. Which might make it realistic but also gets a bit annoying.

Jay and silent Bob are in Scream 3?!
Were 1&2 this cheesy? (Though that is 80% David Arquette, so maybe)

It's now the most successful animated film in history, I enjoyed it but didn't think it as good as the original but at least it's jumped over that bloody Lion King CGI remake at the box office.

Rebel Ridge, on Netflix
It's a Netflix film.
That pretty much says everything you need to know.
To be fair, it's made well enough (without being amazing), and it did go off in different directions to what I expected at the start so it wasn't entirely predictable.
It's decent, and in a month it will have left my memory entirely.

Quiet Place:Day One 7/10 Bit of a coward so don't usually like these high tension hide behind the couch films. But "enjoyed" this one. Leads are great, big scary things are scary. Guess I will need to grow a pair and watch the others.

Hard to give a rating to a movie you have watched many times but I watched American psycho today before going to a wedding. Such a great movie still and even though I’m not a fan of bale he was pretty brilliant in this. I still love every scene with the business cards like it was my first watch.

It's actually a halfway decent movie if you like that sort of thing. Main complaint is that for a supposed chop socky expert he's not exactly Bruce Lee.

Jay and silent Bob are in Scream 3?! Were 1&2 this cheesy? (Though that is 80% David Arquette, so maybe) ^ This was 20mins in and I was so surprised to see J&SB that I was forced to stop watching and post.
After finishing it, I'm sorry to say that it was a bit rubbish.
The scares seemed very unoriginal, and I'd forgotten that by this point the ghostface pratfalls had become kinda a Scary Movie parody. Plus the fact that he's basically invulnerable and omniscient, until he takes his mask off.
Best bits were Sydney and the two Gails.
Dewy was ridiculously overacted, though I'm wondering if that was the same in the first two. No particularly interesting kills, with people largely getting killed in the usual dumb ways. Plus the video bringing back Jamie Kennedy was kinda pointless.
I had definitely seen it before, although I'd forgotten almost everything about it so it didn't really matter.
It is a bit weird that it was produced by Harvey Weinstein and the plot being partly about sexually exploitative movie producers.
I got a bit bored by the end and started channel hopping, which is never a good sign.
6 / 10 - Not as good as All Cheerleaders Die, which was so-so.
I think I'll give it a little while before jumping into Scream 4, just for a bit of a palate cleanser.

Really liked this, not the usual straight to Netflix garbage. Jeremy Sauliner back on form, not quite up there with Blue Ruin but on par with Green Room I reckon.

Fluffy fun with a good cast. Fantastic racing sequences undermined by constant shots of gear shifts and pedal stomps.

Looking for Eric 8/10
As a drama it’s realistically probably a 9 but I was nagged to watch this and folded like a cheap hand despite the fact it contained no cyborgs, monsters or assault rifles which I usually prefer in a film.
Anyway after being sold that it was a real feel good film it was one of the most depressing examples of kitchen sink type stuff I have ever seen. Cantona himself was pretty decent in it, and everybody in it really did act well, particularly Jim from Brassic (in the lead part), his estranged wife (I swear she was from Emmerdale or something) and his stepson (the lad with red hair from Shamless) and that Scouse bloke who is in everything British ever.
One of those films filled with every British actor you have ever seen but can’t quite name.
It had genuine comedy, genuine sadness and a very satisfying ending, it just didn’t have what I wanted from a Saturday evening as a relaxing watch it was not. In fact I will be objective and give it the 9 it deserves but she is going to watch a John Wick in return now lolz
NB - you don’t have to be a United fan to get something out of this I think. Give it a try if you fancy a good drama about friendship, depression or crime even if that’s held you back.

Challengers
Glad I didn't waste my time and money seeing this at the cinema (was dating someone and the next showing after dinner was imax and heard some mixed reviews) The bad reviews are spot on, the 3 main characters are unlikeable, you really don't give a shit about them as they act like spoilt arsehats, although Zendaya in tennis outfit....... The tennis action is good and they do some first person shots to avoid to keep doing from a distance or cutting back and forth.
Its a long film and it has constant flashbacks, which get old. Of course peter the wanker from the guardian loved it (and so does the peter wannabe from CP where I get 4k rentals)

Godzilla Minus One.
Thought I give it more of a proper review than the one I gave a few posts above. Really enjoyed it. Just nice to see a franchise film not swathed in cynicism and nostalgia. I was a bit apprehensive watching it, there's been a lot of Godzilla of late, some of it good, some of it middling, some of it bad but this is up there with the very best of what Godzilla has to offer.
It's a well written tale that feels pleasingly old school, focusing on the guilt of surviving a war amidst Japan trying to rebuild in the aftermath of WW2 but also searching for some self respect. The drama element is so well done I forgot I was meant to be watching a Godzilla film at times. It reminded me of Kurosawa and Grave of the fireflies at times . Some may freak there isn't enough Godzilla, but there's a lot of Godzilla, and when he is on screen its ace. He is almost pleasingly animatronic in places, but his scenes have real heft and touches on the horrors of nuclear annihilation, and like all good Godzilla films, represents (and delivers) the societal and political pain Japan and the cast is going through.
Enjoyed it a lot. I don't watch films as much as I used to, and what I have seen of late amongst the blockbuster space has made me roll my eyes more often that no, so I might just easily be pleased, but yeah recommend this. I could have done without the last couple of seconds (and even maybe that last tiny scene) but yeah its ace.
