Batman: Mask of the Phantasm 8/10
Not the best Batman film but it is good and unlike a lot of animated series -> film it doesn’t just feel like a normal episode that’s been padded out. I like that good relationship with his parents and their death is more fleshed out and better done than most of the other versions.

I still think Phantasm is one of the best Batman movies but it is quite a high bar considering.
I finally saw Men the previous Alex Garland movie. I really enjoyed just a solids slice of weird inscrutable folk horror. All symbolism and mystery. Very much my kinda jam.
They should make Warhammer writers mainline folk horror.

Alien and Aliens Did a double bill of these today. Both are 10/10 perfection, as we all know. Truly iconic. What struck me the most this time around was just how great the practical effects look, particularly Ripley in the loader fighting the queen. I'm not a CGI hater by any means, but this scene looks so solid and real... because it is. Pretty rare that CGI can capture that. Its a less good film and it does have a fair amount of CGI in it but the underwater sequence in Alien Resurrection really is the principal cast almost drowning with a couple of guys in xenomorph suits swimming after them (for close-ups). You’d never get the insurance to try and kill the star of the franchise like that anymore. Or anyone to build a set that large in a water tank that big.

So are you looking at it in the broader sense of Batman films or just in terms of animated ones? I always liked it. But there’s a lot of animated output from DC I haven’t seen. Really miss Mark Hamill being Joker.

If I remember correctly they wanted it fully practical, but the xeno suit sank hard to the point that they couldn’t in good conscience even attempt it. For what it’s worth I thought the ladder scene was cool. When I was 14.

Penguin Highway (Blu-Ray) 7/10, possibly more after another viewing.
I enjoyed this but can't help feeling I've missed out on some greater point or meaning on this first viewing. I've found it lingering in my head afterwards like some sort of unsolved puzzle.
Went in kind of blind and I was expecting some sort of cutesy fantasy adventure, and that's partly what you get but it's wrapped around a stranger, unexplained sci-fi mystery that feels more like it's maybe trying to touch upon deeper existential themes from harder sci-fi or something. It'll be interesting to rewatch it at some point to see if I can make more sense of that part but I like that it's left me pondering it.
The animation and art is lovely and it touches upon themes of childhood curiosity, first-loves and logical scientific reasoning and manages to be mostly charming but also a little odder than I expected.
Anyone else seen it? Be interested to hear thoughts about it.

AVP: Alien versus Predator (disney+) Someone let Paul WS Anderson do an Alien film. I hadn’t watched this in at least ten years and it was pretty much exactly what I expected and remembered. Despite not being a direct adaptation of any previous AVP game, comic or book it manages to borrow something from most of them and comes out with something that feels exactly like an early 00s video game movie. Its dumb and full of stuff Anderson obviously thinks are very cool or badass but despite itself its not unentertaining. Easily in my top three PWSA movies* but, canon or not, its the worst Alien movie** so far. * Mortal Kombat and Event Horizon, obviously ** Its really more of a Predator movie if you ask me, the xenos are just sort of there as an environmental hazard

Pulp Fiction. 10/10. Local Cineworld was showing a 30th anniversary screening but couldn't make it. So decided to show the eldest a (slightly edited) version. It's still a masterpiece. Right up there in my favourite films ever.

I remember when Pulp Fiction first aired on free to air TV here, the entirety of the drug taking/overdose/syringe scenes were cut out. The movie was significantly shorter!

I'd think the drug taking/overdose scene would be quite effective as an anti-drugs message.
Though I am trying to think which part of Pulp Fiction could be singled out to be edited out. I feel like you'd have to edit out about 20 parts, and have not much film left.

They don't make nice wholesome movies like Pulp Fiction anymore...

The overdose scene reminded everyone Eric Stoltz still existed.

Nor will I bother with The Predator. Would be nice to actually get a good Predator game eventually. Its Alien Isolation equivalent, so to speak.

AvP1 at least had Spud from Trainspotting in it. Requiem had absolutely nothing of note.

I'd think the drug taking/overdose scene would be quite effective as an anti-drugs message. "So you see son, if you just stick to the "if it's brown, plunge it down" rule you'll be absolutely fine. You can always have a little dab first if you're unsure."

AvP1 at least had Spud from Trainspotting in it. Requiem had absolutely nothing of note. AVP uses so many tricks from the Resi film too. Clearly PWSA had a clear vision of what he wanted back then. Surprising amount of practical effects and in-camera stuff too. Its just all in the service of a nonsense romp. Luckily its better than any of the Resident Evil movies. Unluckily I know that because I watched all of them in a week earlier this year.

I liked the bit when the Predator swang the Alien by the tail into a pillar. It seemed pretty cool at the time. I can barely remember anything else but for some reason that moment of badassery has stuck.

I've made my own edits a few times so we can watch certain films with our kids (8 and 11), both Hot Shots films to take out the sex scenes, Life of Brian to take out the full nudity scenes and Holy Grail to take out the horny nuns (really just the mention of oral sex). Glad I made the effort because all four films went down a treat, the kids absolutely loved them and have watched them again on their own a few times

Just forwarded that scene really. Know the film so well, was easy to do. Generally take a fairly relaxed view of these things but that scene in particular stood out as one to avoid for now. And when we explained what happened, he waa happy to skip it.

I watched that scene when I was 14, and NGL, helped me avoid a lot of pawn shop buggerings during my time throwing boxing matches.

Longlegs My kind of horror movie, slow paced, weird, unsettling. Dare I say Lynchian vibes at times. Takes its time with lingering shots that ramp up the tension. Got a lot less scary at the end when a character gives a big exposition dump to explain everything, but still a very solid movie. Would never have recognised Nicolas Cage if I hadn't known, so props to him.
