Also, can I just say how much I appreciate how these movies end? The hero beats the bad guy, the hero says "hooray!" and then there's a freeze frame and immediate credits. No epilogue, no nothing, just "OK MOVIE'S OVER BYYYYYYEEEE". It's really quite refreshing, like the producers know exactly what you're here for. Ah, the Karate Kid ending. Or Rocky, I guess. Watching some 80s movies with the kids recently, it's been noticeable that quite a few of them end pretty suddenly. In the case of Karate kid it's far too suddenly and feels really jarring and somewhat unsatisfactory. Yeah, in the case of Heroes of the East, you don't get any resolution to the guy's wife who started all of this. He just beats all the Japanese guys, and then credits.

Could just be they haven't released next week's times yet. My local Vue doesn't give a complete list for the following week until the Wednesday. I would be very surprised if they all decided not to continue showing it next week; it has had a $170+ mil opening weekend globally. Looking like it is going to be a massive hit. That's what I thought too but other films are available to book for friday. Weird. I'll look again tomorrow

My local Cineworld currently has only one film for Friday listed and that's one of the Oscar Best Picture ones they're doing every night for a while. It's unusual but it's probably being done to see if they need to expand the number of screens they need for a popular film, which happens for some of the bigger hits.
Looking at the new releases this week, everyone is keeping the hell away from Dune Part II so distributors aren't releasing anything they expect to grab lots of cinema screens.

Is it just my local cinemas or is Dune 2 really only out for one week? I was going to see it this Friday but all of the three local cinemas stop showing it on Thursday Don't cinemas tend to just run a Thursday to Thursday schedule? It'll still be on, but you'll have to wait until Thursday to book the tickets I think. Yeah, this I think. My local is the same. Has confused me greatly in the past whilst trying to figure out what to do with kids etc.

I do love a good
YAY THE END ending. Karate Kid is the most shining example. It's like the producers were reeeally low on budget and just wanted to go home.

Everybody was to busy kicking ass and having fun in the 80s/90s, they had no time to even think about an epilogue...

In cinema booking update news my local Cineworld has now got Friday up and Dune is still on in three of the seven screens it's got, guess the box office was on the good side.
I imagine other cinemas are similar.

I hadn't seen it before but have been doing a few Speilberg's lately. It was all a bit meh, but I can see why it was popular when it came out and I'm too old for it now.

Anatomy of a Fall.
Very good. Been a while since I watched a procedural/courtroom drama and this is up there with some of the best. Stands out because instead of being focused on some wider bigger than life issue (I.e corruption or racism) it goes in on relationship dynamics, and is the more fascinating for it. Sandra Hüller is fantastic. Enjoyed this a lot.
4.5/5

Napoleon (AppleTV+) A faintly interesting study of a character and period of history I am ashamed to have very little knowledge of - and this is unlikely to spark a personal deep-dive into French history and politics. The leads were all fine but I found the whole thing a little muted, even the battles which were somehow diluted in drama to the point where I can barely remember them now. 6/10 I also watched this. I was aware of some of the complaints about historical accuracy, but was mostly just looking for a decent costume drama with some Ridley Scott filmmaking. Somehow it manages to be both a rubbish history film and a boring drama, while looking quite dull apart from the battle scenes where the incessant greyness was appropriate.
Joaquin Phoenix was a weird choice, acting sullen and pathetic, mumbling and mewling his way through the whole thing. Inverting the age difference between him and Joséphine is extra weird considering how obsessed it is with their relationship and the dynamic between them. Vanessa Kirby is about the right age (and she was quite good), but Napoleon was in his mid-twenties when they married and Phoenix is what, 50?
5/10 for me. Maybe 4/10.

Vice 6/10
It’s decent but there’s no insight and overall it’s not that interesting. Some of the performances are good but in not really sure why they bothered making this.

Terminal velocity - 7/10
Another one I hadn’t seen. Apparently this got panned by critics when It released, I’ve no idea why as it’s a solid action movie with some amazing set pieces (the car off the plane at the end is top tier). It’s also one the few old action movies I’ve seen with a very strong female character, Nastassja Kinski is basically the lead actor in this, which is good as Charlie Sheen seems to think he’s still in a hot shots movie. It’s also has James Gandolfini as the bad guy and he’s great too.
Not as good as Drop Zone, but still an enjoyable romp.

I saw this in the cinema as a kid and was very meh on it, despite my parents loving it. I watched it a couple of years ago as a parent and thought it was great.

I always liked it way more than Drop Zone, but maybe it comes down to which one I saw first. Drop Zone always seemed like a pale imitation. Based on age old memories though, so I dunno what I'd think now. I remember keeping my Terminal Velocity DVD and selling my Drop Zone one on ebay though. I also remember most of the set pieces from TV, but nothing from DZ. *shrug*

Dune 2. Both really good and really boring. Really well shot and performed, but fuck was it slow.

I was thinking about that after I saw it. For a near three hour movie, some parts felt really rushed but I couldn't think of much fat I would trim elsewhere to give those bits room to breathe. Possibly all the stuff on Geidi Prime? Maybe it really would have been enough to just have Austin Butler pop out of a steamy metal coffin in his lightspeed briefs.

Yeah, that was the only bit I felt that could have been trimmed down. It wasn't completely superfluous and does add to some of the wider machinations taking place, but I did feel it detracted from the central story a little. I was certainly never bored.

The Geidi Prime stuff was wild and I wanted more! Villenueve went full Lynch-mode there. I'm itching to see it again because it sped through so much that I'd even forgotten the super cool opening assualt.

Oh totally. It was great and looked fantastic. Just didn't feel hugely necessary for a film that focused almost entirely on Paul outside of that section.
It's a minor complaint from me and the only bit of fat that feels like it could be trimmed, which is impressive for an almost 2 3/4 hour long film.

I could have watched more if it was available. I'm all for movies that respect the audiences time but everything I saw felt necessary in drawing the audience into the world and its mythos more. I think as Mola put it, it felt like a blockbuster movie for adults.

Dune 2
Absolutely epic, a film that needs to be seen in the cinema. There was one scene I actually felt like I was there when the surround sound kicked in shaking the seats.

The only thing I didn't like was the screen I was in was so packed it made the room hotter and I felt like I was going to pass out.

Not sure why everybody is talking about Dune 2 when you can watch/discuss Terminal Velocity and Drop Zone instead...
