Transformers the last knight 1/10
Didn’t think it would be possible to be significantly worse than any of the others but this is really awful, suffering from the worst problem of being really boring even when there are loads of explosions. Anything Hopkins is terrible and still the best person in it.

Yeah if there’s one thing Ben Affleck has proven it’s that he’s probably more talented off camera than on. I really like most of his directed movies. He bothers me a bit in front of camera.

Latest Mission Impossible...shat, I gave up around the 75 min mark, missus watched until the end I think and gave it 6/10. I think they have been getting worse and worse this continues the trend. Would much rather have a new Bourne film, but even then I think the trouble might be that the actors playing these roles are just too old or getting too old. Cruise does kind of look good for his age but othertimes he really does not, even with all the surgery and hair dye.

It was Blenheim Palace, I saw them filming it a few years ago.
I say ‘saw’, I saw the bits of the grounds they blocked off to keep prying eyes away and heard loud noises.

The Holdovers 7/10 Enjoyed it, but didn't live up the hype for me, good performances all round though.
The Covenant 6/10 Guy Ritchie will have you know he directed it. I was looking for a "brain off" film this filled my need for the disposable.
First 30 mins or so are really good, set it up well, but then it dragged on for far too long and it got evermore fantastical, not in a good way.

Priscilla - Mubi - 6/10
Love me some Sofia Coppola, but this was disappointing. Very competently made. Looks the business. The leads are good but it was all a bit flat. Lots of plot happens off-screen which leaves lots of shots of Priscilla moping around in beautiful outfits.
Interesting reading up afterwards about Priscilla's and Lisa's differing reactions to the film. Lisa wasn't happy with the depiction of Elvis saying it portrayed him terribly unfairly. I agree, Elvis comes across as a nasty piece of work, but then it's literally an adaptation of Priscilla's memoir, so very much her story to tell.

But the dress made out of flip flops was good.

Is it just my local cinemas or is Dune 2 really only out for one week? I was going to see it this Friday but all of the three local cinemas stop showing it on Thursday

Maybe but I'd be surprised if its run was that short. It seems to be tracking well. That said, my local didn't show Godzilla Minus One so who knows?

There are no showings past thursday in Vue, Showcase, or the little indie one. Most baffling.

Could just be they haven't released next week's times yet. My local Vue doesn't give a complete list for the following week until the Wednesday.
I would be very surprised if they all decided not to continue showing it next week; it has had a $170+ mil opening weekend globally. Looking like it is going to be a massive hit.

Heroes of the East (Mubi)
A 1978 Shaw Brothers romantic comedy/martial arts thing, about a Chinese dude who has a Japanese wife. She gets mad that he's better at martial arts than her, she runs back to Japan, and in winning her back he somehow ends up insulting the entire Japanese martial arts world. And then they come over and he has to fight a judo guy, a samurai guy, a ninja etc etc.
This is actually kind of notable for not actually being super racist towards Japanese people. In these movies you often have Japanese as villains, and not actually played by Japanese people. But here they're not villains, they're played by Japanese actors, and they're treated with a kind of... respect? Obviously the Chinese martial arts still reign supreme, and the only time the main guy is in danger of losing is because of sneaky ninja tricks. But it's pretty progressive by the standards of these movies.
It's still really fucking sexist, mind, but that's the unfortunate price of admission to most of these movies. You come for the fights, and the fights are great.
8/10

Also, can I just say how much I appreciate how these movies end? The hero beats the bad guy, the hero says "hooray!" and then there's a freeze frame and immediate credits. No epilogue, no nothing, just "OK MOVIE'S OVER BYYYYYYEEEE". It's really quite refreshing, like the producers know exactly what you're here for.

Poor Things
A bizarre and brilliant movie, with 2 fantastic leads, and 1 slightly shonky accent from Defoe. Loved the way this movie looked, and the score leaned into the weirdness of the world wonderfully.
There’s a bit of Frankenstein in there, a dash of Baz Luhrmann, tonnes of furious jumping… I thought it was great.

It'll still be on, but you'll have to wait until Thursday to book the tickets I think.

Watching some 80s movies with the kids recently, it's been noticeable that quite a few of them end pretty suddenly. In the case of Karate kid it's far too suddenly and feels really jarring and somewhat unsatisfactory.

Napoleon (AppleTV+)
A faintly interesting study of a character and period of history I am ashamed to have very little knowledge of - and this is unlikely to spark a personal deep-dive into French history and politics.
The leads were all fine but I found the whole thing a little muted, even the battles which were somehow diluted in drama to the point where I can barely remember them now.
6/10
