On reflection it might be one point too high. I just really enjoyed it a lot at the time Fair enough. Either way, it's not as good as Karate Kid.
Throw in Terminal Velocity, Hard Target, Hard Rain, Goldeneye and Blade if they aren't already on the list, though I think you might have said you did some of them just before.
I always liked Die Hard 2 a lot, just not quite as much as Die Hard 1.

Like if you tried reading Catcher in the Rye for the first time as an adult maybe. Don't recommend doing this. Holden Caulfield is an absolutely annoying twat who you just spend the entire book wanting to give a good slap.
I imagine if I'd read it as a teenager he'd have been some cool emo role model.

They are all on the list apart from goldeneye. Seen it too many times 👍

So it seems Prime has Dune on rent for a cheap coffee today. More than the price, I'm worried about the 2h 35m runtime. Worth wasting an evening? I've never read the books, but I did watch the old movie and it was... weird. Weird but disappointing, I'll add.

Dune part 1 or Lynch’s Dune? The new part 1 is on Netflix too so no need to rent The new one. The Lynch movie is the one I watched before. I don't have Netflix, since i don't watch much TV at all. Anyway, it's literally one euro for the UHD version on Prime, so it would be worth a try regardless... although my monitor only goes up to 1080p. So yeah. Well, it should downscale so that's probably going to look a little nicer. Tell you what, I'll bite... I got nothing do to tonight anyway. And I want to see if it's any better than the Lynch movie.

It didn't feel long to me. Definitely good to see on a big screen.
There are some movies that are long, but don't feel it. And there are others that really feel it.
The Flash, Indy 5, etc.. were all about 2hrs35 mins I think, and they all could have done with 30 minutes being cut out. I didn't feel that way about Dune Part 1. For what that's worth.

On the plus side, if it's especially good, I could even go and watch the sequel immediately tomorrow. They have an original lanugage showing in the afternoon.

Back to the Future 3 (Peacock) We were going to rent Doctor Strange, but it wasn't working so we defaulted to this (after much argument among the kids). I enjoyed it a lot, though I do think that you get a lot more out of it if (a) you remember all the details from #1 and #2, and (b) you're familiar with a bunch of Westerns. Both are true for me, but (a) was spotty for the kids, and (b) was non-existent. They did enjoy the action and jokes though, and seemed very into the final action sequence. (judging by hard one of them was hanging on to my arm) I really enjoyed all three movies on our recent family watches. Imho they hold up really well... *but* they also rely on quite a lot of knowledge of stuff like the 1950s, westerns, 80s pop culture that I'm not sure youngsters today would have. When we watched in in 85, 1955 was only 30 years ago. Now even '85 is 40 years ago!
As such, the kids have enjoyed them, but haven't gotten as hooked on them as other things like Indy.
PS/ The scenes where there are two Michael J Foxes on screen at the same time are really well done. I've seen ones done in the past few years that were much more obviously fake.

Well, so I'm watching it now. This way, I can play games in the evening.
All I can think of is that the main character is Willy Wonka of House Atreides.

Hah that's funny because I couldn't see past Paul Atreides in Willy Wonka

Ok, so here it is:
Dune (Part 1)
Haven't read the books, but I did watch the Lynch movie so I know the story (more or less). Now I didn't like that old movie much, so I wasn't expecting anything... but this new one was a lot better than I thought it would be. It's long, yes, and I'm pretty sure they could have shaved off a good 20 minutes here and there. Maybe if the characters spoke like normal people instead of slow motioning their words? Still, it is exciting when it needs be, visually stunning without relying too much on special FXs, and almost never boring. A solid effort, and makes me interested in the second part.
8/10
Except...
This part 1 covered the bits that were already decent enough in the old movie (it is much better though). That makes me worried: the sequel is gonna cover the half that was boring as hell in the Lynch one. Will it manage to make it more exciting, as it admittedly did the first part, or was the original story itself simply not good in its second half? Time will tell, because I'm already organizing a night out to the cinema with my friends next week.

Drop Zone - 8.5/10
Snipes and Busey go at it in sky diving action romp. Obviously a riff on point break, but it’s really well done and Snipes and Busey in full villain mode give it their all. I just wish Busey was in it a bit more. The stunt work is fantastic too. Highly recommended

One thing that really annoys me with Drop Zone is the utter shite green screen effects for the lead actors during the skydiving sequences. Feels like such a shame when they're sandwiched in the middle of what is otherwise probably the best skydiving sequences ever shot for a film.
Also it's worth watching alone for the Swoop rescue sequence, the moment where that character detaches from his parachute and an absolutely seminal piece of Hans Zimmer scoring kicks in is just **chef's kiss!**.

The Accountant 7/10
Ben Affeck isn’t believable as any part of being an autistic accounting expert killer but it’s fairly entertaining. I think it wants to be clever about it but it isn’t really, it gets a bit bored of that halfway through and focuses on the killing instead.

Good Will Hunting. Fuck me, another stark reminder at what a loss Robin Williams was. Some absolutely beautiful scenes that it doesn't seem possible they were written by a young Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Haven't seen it in 20+ years and it bowled me over again.

At least a few people have their fingerprints on that script. I'm not saying that Damon/ Affleck didn't do the bulk of the story but there's no fucking way any script like that bounces around so many hands (especially so many influential ones) without them leaving traces on it.

I am aware that very few things are written solely by those given the writing credits. But even so, it is theirs and they deserve the credit imo.

Given they’ve both written stuff since that’s been highly regarded, and there’s no suggestion anyone else did much to it then I’m pretty sure they deserve the credit. It’s not like the screenwriters guild tends to ignore things like that.
Dune Part one 8/10 It’s not one which seems as good after multiple viewers, it’s still great not just as brilliant as that first time was.

Dune: Part 2 Think I went in with my expectations slight tampered on this. Initial reactions were insanely positive, calling it the greatest sci-fi film of the generation and such. This all seemed a hyperbolic, to the extent that they were obviously not to be trusted. A few people here seem to have come out with the reaction of it being very good, but not as good as the first and I sensed disappointment.
Perhaps going in with those dampened expectations helped, as I absolutely loved it. Fantastic performances all round by the cast, especially Chalamet who really becomes a leading man here.
Everything looks immense on the big screen, from the barren vistas to the giant mechanical devices chewing it up, from the giant sand worms to the big explosions. We don't get truly designed for the big screen films that often, but this is certainly one of them. A real treat for the eyes.
But even with all that spectacle it doesn't forget to be thematically focused. As with all great sci-fi, it is still ideas driven, much more than the first film, raising thoughts on religion, manipulation through fanaticism and prophecy and the power of stories to control. On one viewing I feel there is too much of this to fully take in and it is certainly going to reward repeat viewings.
If there was a downside, I would echo others on Christopher Walken being a bit rubbish. He isn't in it too much though, so not particularly off putting. I would also say that the section on the Harkonnen's planet feels like a distraction from the central plot. It builds on the political intrigue side, provides a conclusion to a character from the first film and it certainly looks fantastic, but probably could have been shaved down quite a bit.
I don't think it is a perfect film, but the two films combined are pretty close to it and makes for something really special. Can't wait for there to be more.

Yeah if there’s one thing Ben Affleck has proven it’s that he’s probably more talented off camera than on.
