There are a few moments when he sounds like (an Englishman's idea of) a Russian. But there are lots more moments when it dissolves into East London "BET NOW, YOU SLAAAAAG!" twang, particularly at the end of the sentences in his speeches. As good as his Nordic "I've come to kill your Monsta" from Beowulf? I don't think I've seen that, but I can imagine.

Cruella
Made to watch this by Mrs Toast and the little Toasts. Origin story of evil unlikeable bitch who, as a younger evil unlikeable bitch, seeks to usurp older evil unlikeable bitch. Possibly the flattest character arc in film history, and portrays doggos in less than flattering light too.
What was the point of that/100.

Nobody
Not quite what I expected from the few bits I'd expected something more along the lines of Falling Down, however despite the initial confusion it's a cracking film. It flows well, and while he is clearly kicking ass, it feels quite practical. There's no silly acrobatics, but it can be brutal. And the lead isn't someone you'd expect for the role, but works very well.

My Octopus Teacher
Slightly odd film about a burned-out camera guy reconnecting with himself through the medium of observing a common octopus. Some amazing images, and a lovely dive location, slightly spoilt by the burned-out camara guy's saffer narration. Moral of the film should have been 'never get emotionally involved with an octopus'.
Definitely not hentai/10

Malignant. Just got back from the cinema seeing this and I quite liked it. I'm not the biggest Conjuring or Saw fan but this had a certain knowing quality to it that I liked. A good twist in the plot toward the end and the antagonist, "Gabriel" is pretty memorable as well, which is getting increasingly hard to do in films like this. Seems to swing from cheesily funny to quite creepy. The violence in a particular scene in a police station is just delightful as well

Oh, and I saw Shang-Chi as well. It was utter shite. The general consesus seems to be that it's a mid-tier Marvel film but for me it's one of the worst ones. I liked the sidekick/love interest character but thats about it.

Das Boot (the new one, and yes it counts, miniseries, film, whatever). I’m not a fan. They’ve lost all of the claustrophobia by bringing in a B-plot about the french resistance where everyone is straight out of ‘Allo ‘Allo, all seemingly filmed in the same collonaded street in La Rochelle. So never mind the terror and depth charges and isolation amd inhumanising conditions, we’ll cut away for 10 minutes to a quiet chat over tea. Stick to the original, all the best scenes from the new one are lifted directly from it anyway. Take it to the series thread.

The very first thing that broke my immersion was that I cannot for one minute think of a single Dalmatian that hasn’t been a complete numpty and idiot dog, but they just aren’t believable as vicious. Even if they were, they’re bred to have soft jaws. They basically gum you. Weird thing to get hung up on, but that’s me and that’s my hill.

1917 Technically impressive with terrific performances from the leads but it just didn't grab me, and I'm not sure why. There have been more affecting war films in my opinion and I'm not sure why this was lacking. There was an emptiness here and it just kind of washed over me. 70/100 Yeah this left me similarly cold as well. Feel like the ending was supposed to be this huge emotional climax but it ended up being a bit meh.

I saw Respect last week. Great performance from Jennifer Hudson but I didn't think it was a particularly good film. The story wasn't particularly well told (like a highlights reel from her life that didn't really hang together) and it was just too long. I was pleased when the credits rolled. Shame, as Aretha Franklin deserved a much better film. My girlfriend, on the other hand, really enjoyed it, so clearly it works for some. 8/10 for Hudson's performance, 4/10 for the film. 6/10 in total seems fair for this.

The Fourth Kind (Netflix)
Milla Jovovich is a therapist whose clients claim to have been abducted by aliens.
Goes in the same category as The Blair Witch Project but with archived footage played against events in the film to give it an air of 'authenticity'. It has a few creepy moments but when it isn't doing those the film feels disjointed and pulls you out of the atmosphere it's trying build.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Likable lead, interesting(ish) bad guy and overall origin story, some nice laughs and decent fight choreography, not bad at all.
Until the end that is, when it shits the bed in spectacular style by throwing every piece of third rate CG they could muster up at the finale. Removed all dramatic weight from proceedings in one fell swoop.
When will they learn less is more.

Sounds just like every other Marvel film made in the past 5 or so years, then... I'll probably still check it out eventually, but fuck me am I tired of the last act turning into a CGI-fest.

Coherence
Low rent movie that I'd never heard of but turned out to be pretty fun to watch. Sci-Fi drama, I suppose. Anyway it's 90 mins so it's already won me, and other people my age, over.

It has a few creepy moments but when it isn't doing those the film feels disjointed and pulls you out of the atmosphere it's trying build. 4/10 I watched this again recently, and I still really like the things that it gets right, despite all the nonsense about it being based on real events. Horror is rarely done well, and often veers into spoof or slapstick territory, but the horror elements in the Fourth Kind are absolutely spot on... the "owl" hypnosis interviews were terrifying. I still don't think there's a truly good alien abduction film (maybe Fire in the Sky is an exception) but the concept terrifies me, and I really wish The Fourth Kind had forgotten about the whole interview/footage angle and just done a straight forward horror story about a single mum who discovers she, her family, and everyone else in the town are systematically abducted by aliens, with loads of creepy "bedroom invasion" scenes, people found dead in their beds, people going missing, etc. ... then the disbeliever (the Sheriff) could also discover he's being taken too (or his wife gets taken) legitimising the "crazy" single mother's claims about her missing child, and they could hatch a neighbourhood plan to stop the abductions, blow the whole thing open to the media/government level, or simply accept (in true horror movie fashion) that there's nothing they can do about it. Cut to credits. I just see the whole film as a frustrating missed opportunity.

Respect
Others here have summed it up pretty well. Great performances throughout. But overly long and slow, boring pacing hold it back. And personally, I got the feeling they intentionally left a lot of stuff out. A bit of research and they missed all this!...
Aretha's mother died because of a heart attack aged 34. The reason she left Aretha's father was because he fathered a child with a 12-year old girl at his church's congregation! Her father went banging on singer Sam Cooke's hotel door after wondering what the 23-year old was doing with his underage daughter! After having her 4th child by Ted White, she 'entertained' Sam Cooke's brother, Charles Cooke. When he learned about this, White went to Charles' place, got in a fight and ended up shooting him in the groin!
So even though Aretha was a ho of sorts and her family more fucked up than most, I don't think it would have hurt the film to include some of these juicy details warts-and-all, if only to help to fill the bloated run time.

Candyman
The way the made a sequel that incorporates the original like it does is good. It's heart is certainly in the right place! But there are plot holes everywhere to justify it's own course that it makes itself seem ridiculous when it tries to be sincere. And the juxtaposition of a grounded, gentrified and often racist reality against the film's supernatural boogeyman aspect doesn't gel as well as I hoped.
But ultimately... this film is just not scary. At all. Very early on, the film states that racism and abuse is the real horror here. If that's the case, why don't they make THAT scary?? The Candyman is a vengeful spirit that appears because of this, and were he born of horror it would make his impact more meaningful. But he in a way is a victim, almost justified in his actions, and so I never really fear him.
But there is a really neat concept in this and the acting is sound.

Worst film I've seen in ages and I mostly watch horror films. I'm not a film buff, but the direction in this was pretty terrible. Really weird, jarring shots all over the place. Terrible music choices that just didn't fit at all. The film takes itself way too seriously for what it is (stupid). The prison cell scene especially was so cliche and dumb. I hate it

My Son - 7/10 McAvoy is great as usual and you can almost see the cogs turning during some of the improv bits, as you would in that kind of situation. It all kind of loses it in the last act though. I still think the ex wife's fella was dodgy as fuck though. That red herring was a bit too obvious...

Obviously a far lesser film than Senna, but also manages to be a little less brazenly hagiographic.

Copshop
Pretty entertaining police station siege film in the 70s/80s exploitation vein that seems to be all the rage these days. Two hired killers attempt to kill Frank Grillo who's been arrested. In fact the worst thing about the film is Grillo. I don't know why studios keep trying to convince us that he's remotely charismatic as a lead. Gerard Butler and whoever plays the other hired killer as well as the cop protagonist all blow him out of the water for screen presence. a solid western action film
