Following on from Star Trek TMP...
WRATH OF KHAN
WoK is one of my favourite r0mPs and I just never get tired of it. I can quote pretty much the entire script, I'm very fucking sad.
Nick Meyer gives the franchise a shot of Hornblower and makes it a high-stakes naval battle in the sky. There's very little trekking in this, it's all very militaristic (which Roddenberry hated) right down to Kirk being piped aboard the Enterprise and the claustrophic submarine-like interiors. They also perform the Picard maneuvre for the first time in those fetching new Bob Fletcher dress uniforms. All that lovely trapunto.
Tainted trek aside, this is pretty much a perfect popcorn movie and a brilliant sequel. It was made for comparatively peanuts by Paramount's TV arm after the profligate indulgences of TMP, but they still managed to get ILM to do the effects and Pixar (nee Lucasfilm Graphics Group) providing the famous Genesis simulation.
Shatner's great, Montalban is stupendous, James Horner's score moves from crescendo to crescendo in contrast with Goldsmith's lyrical score for TMP and the whole thing is just insanely well written and structured - foreshadowing, classical allusions and midlife crisis et al. Trek never had a more memorable villain than Khan because his rage is so completely relatable, as the best villains have to be.
Meyer was a brilliant choice to bring on board because he cared very little for Trek, knew practically nothing about it and turned it into a rollicking spacefaring R O M P.
I would have been completely happy if Trek had finished here after Scotty plays the pipes and sometimes I pretend it did.
10 Khans out of Khan. To the last, I would grapple with thee.

Commando
Iconic for a generation of action films. Lots of silly fun with cringe worthy one liners. The female leads transformation throughout the film is also quite impressive.
Let off some steam Bennet/10

21 Bridges
Neo-noir thriller that sees a detective hunt for the cop killers involved in a bungled heist of another drug dealer. But there's more going on beneath the surface.
It's pretty predictable but it's done with enough style and conviction, and with enough pace, for it to be quite engrossing. Good performances, and a good score.
Better than average, 8/10

Yeah, I remember enjoying that a lot. Not enough of those sorts of films are made imo.

I watched Kill Command on prime last night. It's shit, but an entertaining kind of shit.
Entertaining/100

spy who dumped me
Could of done without seeing this, Mila Kunis is fine but Kate McKinnon is god awful and the film goes on for far too long. Also it feels like they bumped up the violence and swearing as it has nothing going for it.
3/10

Pontypool - A zombie movie where the zombing is spread through language rather than biting. Kind of weird. It’s a good concept but it’s not really fleshed out and there isn’t much consistency but it’s alright.
It’s one of those films that is shot entirely in the one place they had budget for so feels like a stage play, which gives it a fairly intimate atmosphere but is also slightly frustrating as you just hear the audio of seemingly more interesting things happening.
Solid 6/10

I loved Pontypool. Think I might watch it again later tonight. I think only hearing bits of what's going on outside and leaving the rest up to your imagination helps the tension a lot

Solid 6/10 One Cut of the Dead is a really good zombie film that's a bit different if you haven't seen it
I also would recommend watching it without reading too much about it, if anything

In Time
High concept sci-fi starring Justin Timberlake, of all people. I vaguely remember hearing about this film when it was released and thought it sounded pretty dumb.
In a future, time has replaced money. Some individuals have thousands of years of life, whilst others *literally* live to day-to-day.
As a metaphor for capitalism it's very on the nose to say the least. Then having the lead played by a successful pop star celebrity confuses that messaging sightly.
It's not great, but given that it's an original sci-fi not based on an existing IP, I kinda feel a bit more lenient in my judgment.
6/10

Cape Fear
Yes I seem to be watching everything with De Niro in it this month.
The Sideshow Bob episode killed some of the suspense, but it's really good. De Niro's southern accent is awful and I had to flick subtitles on to catch key bits of dialogue, but he's proper menacing. I was a little tense all the way through
Infinite rakes/10

Aliens versus Predator. I have no idea why I do this to myself. Haven't seen it since it first came out and I wasn't impressed then. It certainly hasn't got any better. Somehow manages to feel absolutely nothing like either an Alien or a Predator film. I'd completely forgotten this was a Paul W.S. Anderson film until the end credits, which actually explains a lot of the nonsense. Never watching this turd again/100 Really enjoyed this film. The main Predator's helmet is my favourite.

A Ghost Story - 7/10 Some shots can go on for way too long (yeah, we get it, you're eating the entire bloody pie), and the aspect ratio is a bit wanky, but overall I enjoyed it. David Lowery is definitely on my list of directors to look out for now, anyway. Censor - 6/10 Enjoyable up until the ending, which just felt like it completely shat the bed unless I completely missed something. Was there more to it than her just going a bit mental?... Kind of expected a reveal that she killed her sister, but that never really happens so you just assume... [/span]

Pig 9-10
What a beautiful, sad, heart-warming film this is.
You can never tell what you're going to get with Nicholas Cage. His films are mostly shite but I just love watching Nicholas Cage doing Nicholas Cage. He's one craaaazy mofo! But sometimes you get a film of his life this. The one where it says Academy Award Winner Nicholas Cage in the trailer. His performance in this is sublime.
Nicholas Cage goes on a quest to find is pig-napped(?) truffle pig. It takes him out of the wilderness and back into the city. With it being Cage though, I had no idea which way this film was going to go. It's definitely NOT John Wick with a pig but there's always the sense that he will go full Cage but that never happens.
This film is so damn good. There are two standout scenes in this which are just phenomenal but it's not Cage that's leading the way, it's the support cast.
A truly unforgettable film and well worth your time.
The good news is it looks like we're getting bonkers Cage back for Prisoners of Ghostland.
Riders of Justice - 7.5/10
Danish revenge film starring Mads Mikkelsen. Mads gets...umm...mad after he finds out that the train accident his wife was killed in wasn't an accident and goes out for...umm...justice.
That's enough of the bad puns. I though this film was really entertaining. I was genuinely surprised at how funny it was too. The three people who end up helping him are a real bunch of misfits and they really bring the humour.
it's also the kind of dark humour which probably wouldn't sit well with some people. I'm sure there's going to be an American remake of this but I don't think the comedy will translate that well.

Funnily enough I completely forget about Pig. Solid 8/10 for me.
Loved the character arc of his douchy accomplice.

I wouldn't say his films are "mostly shite" sure he's done a lot of straight to dvd/stream trash lately but they are pretty easy to identify and avoid, his great films are amazing.
If you watch videos or read about him describing his characters, there's a huge amount of work and analysis that he puts into each of them it's a bit reductive to reduce it to Cage doing crazy faces.

Its the same with a lot of actors who just treat it as a job. For every 'Ipcress File' Michael Caine gave us a 'Jaws: The Revenge'.

Shang Chi and the legend of the 10 rings. 84/100
Pretty damn good, much better than Black Widow. It's kind of like the sort of film Mortal Kombat should have been. Great action, some nice cameos. 2 end credits scenes, first is worth waiting for, second is a wait-for-the-dvd-release.

The amount of money that Willis and co get for those Randall Emmett VOD clunkers is insane. If I was a lazy cynical washed-up fucker, I'd take the million he gets FOR A SINGLE DAY'S WORK and totally sleepwalk throught it.

Pontypool
Still really enjoyed this. Not sure I quite follow the logic of the virus but there are future films planned so hopwfully it'll fill it out a bit. Definitely going to watch
