Mastodon can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned- I love that there is always an unpredictable streak with their music. If their next album took a JPop influence I'd still listen to it.
The new one seems a perfect soundtrack for menial tasks in my man cave, which is both a painfully middle aged thing to say and also the highest praise I can offer.

How has this not been posted yet The ending is something else Ending is absolutely brutal but I didn't really gel to the rest of the song. Kinda similar to Slaughter to Prevail, the breakdowns are the big takeaways from the songs but not much else.

For a different type of metal, if anyone's interested, Beast in Black's latest album came out. They don't do anything innovative or crazy, but they do make some true earworms, anime inspired power metal that catchy riffs and high vocals. It's a good time. youtu.be/tXZK2PIL3pc

Yep,it's just fun from start to finish and surprisingly Durst seems to be having fun rather than stuck up his own arse. 'Out of Style' has a really nice riff and I did enjoy their cover of INXS.
It won't win any awards but it's a solid short album. It's nice to hear DJ Lethal and Wes again.

Have to admit, despite my better judgement I have a soft spot for Limp Bizkit. The new album seems okay as far as their stuff goes, I do kinda like the fact that they aren't even trying to make a statement or point, it's not overwrought, and Durst expresses some self-awareness of how he's perceived.

Jesus I went back and listened to Leviathan today. It reminded me how fucking great Mastodon were back then.
I do really like the newer albums but Leviathan unquestionably shits all over them. It's super memorable and well-written throughout but still super rough and chaotic sounding with some mad energy.
It's probably just my age showing but around 2005 was a bit of a golden age for heavy progressive music. Mastodon, Opeth, Gojira, Isis, Dillinger all at their peak.

Yeah I've been loving the Limp Bizkit album, production is terrible though. Borland just plays brilliant guitar parts.
I do prefer their last one Gold Cobra though.
In other nu metal revival news, Slipknot's new song about the Peter Sutcliffe case 'The Chapeltown Rag' now up for streaming.

Mastodon, I do love the new album. I'm quite comfortable with them going more prog and less grindy tbh as I get older (and so do they).
But yeah Leviathan was something special.
Always remembered being jawdropped by that really brief bit of country picking followed by the slamming riff and double bass in 'Megalodon' and another memorable but is that brief dead stop followed by the big BWWWWWAAAAMMM! in 'Hearts Alive'.
That period of Mastodon had those kind of moments, and I was but a slip of a an early 20s boy at the time so of course music from earlier in life can cut deeper.
Remission was one of the heaviest things I had heard back in the day. It had this really sludgy feel that was a big contrast to the very clinical Fear Factory/Meshuggah/melodeath stuff I was in to then, they were a real melting pot back then and had tinges of hardcore and Florida DM and stuff in their sound.

That Limp Bizkit album is an odd one. First 4 tracks are pretty decent bangers, but then that INXS cover slows things down. And it never really recovers and just feels disjointed. Here's LB pretending to be Nirvana, here they are pretending to be Ministry. Nothing bad as such but those first tracks outweigh anything found later on.

Quite like Sarke - Allsighr.
Kind of 70's rock meets 80's thrash meets 90's black metal.
This track weirdly reminds me of Jeff Wayne.

Just found out a good mate from school (and beyond) who has done bands for years starting with punk/hardcore and more recently NWOBHM is playing guitar tonight for CARCASS. Tempted to go down just to see him in stage in front of a few thousand people. So chuffed for the guy.

I like the new limp bizkit, it's the musical equivalent of a worn pair of jogging bottoms. I've just hoovered our house listening to it with noise cancelling headphones, busting out some classic turn of the millennium stompy new metal dance moves. The look of bewildered contempt on my daughter's face was an added bonus.

Only saw Paradise Lost and as per the above post, Carcass. During Leviathan, Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye they were untouchable. Think their move to heavy rock was a misstep but still decent although I really do not like The Hunter. Still not getting on with new album but I'd now say it's better than The Hunter.

Holy hell, inspired by seeing Carcass on Saturday I went on a little black hole tour of 90s DM and BM last night and listened to Dissection's "Storm of the Lights Bane". What a banger, can't believe it passed me by in my metalhead youth. Absolutely love the melodic elements of the mid/early 90s BM scene eg first Burzum too. Takes the edge off the intensity. At the Gates another great example - seems like a strong maiden influence pervades.

Nice Interestingly (for me at least!) the album I never could get into as much as everyone else, was At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul. love DM, love Maiden, don't love AtG The dude from Dissection was a knob but that album is incredible (see also: Burzum). I see it's also now on Spotify which is good news!

My blasphemous opinion is that Blood Mountain has never done it for me Blood Mountain is one of my lesser favoured albums, the technicality in it is a little insistant. I appreciate it, but it's not as listenable as their best. But that's the great thing about Mastodon, no matter what anyone's favourite album is, they're all entirely valid answers.

At the risk of going over stuff I've already mentioned recently, I *really* am loving the Monolord album "Your Time to Shine"
Maybe it's just my headspace at the moment but the melancholic, but not depressive, air surrounding the stonery doom really does push a few buttons for me at the moment. And it's quite progressive too, featuring real moments of building and cathartic release.

Oh man. Storm of the Light's Bane is a stone cold classic. What a fucking album. Where Dead Angels Lie and Thorns of Crimson Death are such incredible songs.

You bastards have got me on a right Dissection kick now.
Which will inevitably lead to Watain and Arckanum.

A friend put me onto Jinjer recently, her vocal range is actually insane. Some of the transitions from singing to growling are actually inhuman

She can actually growl, but this is a studio recording so there is definitely post processing. This is live, she's very talented youtu.be/XtOYjCkHJak

I am actually going to see Jinjer live twice this month. First time ever seeing them live and I cannot wait. Became a huge fan watching Youtube reaction videos during the Pandemic. Can't say that I listen to a lot of metal or even other music these days but there was no way I was missing a chance to see this act live when they were touring so near me.
