Kongh: Sludge/Doom. I just wish the rest of the album was as good as the title track.

Hellripper, seemingly a Scottish one man effort, releasing a new song. Described as melodic black/speed metal, within the first 30 secs its very reminiscent of something like Vektor.

Some music really fits this weather, and Borknagar's entire True North album fits this frosty weather.

Came across this after Blut Aus Nord posted it on one of their social media feeds, it's incredible. Spacey doom, tasteful but powerful.

The riff at 3:42 🤘 Loving the combination of bad ass rock n roll and black metal.. hope to see some live shows in London soon

Was at this the other night. Great gig, I've seen them a few times and this was probably the best I've seen them. Great set list too.
I really like Dave's stage manner, very down to earth between songs then just unleashing harsh vocals effortlessly. Not many extreme acts see the vocalist grumbling that he can't read the set list because he's not wearing his glasses (in the video at the start of Submission is for the Weak)
Anyway, I loved it. I don't use my phone at gigs but I'm actually glad other people do.

BangerTV have shared their albums of the year... always a good list to pick up some great stuff you may have missed.
For me this year it's Goatwhore - Angels Hung from the Arches of Heaven. Awesome blackened thrash.
There's tons of other stuff in there that I need to listen to though. The Eliminator album is also excellent for anyone that felt the last few Iron Maiden albums could have done with a bit more energy...

For me it's probably Darkthrone - Astral Fortress.
Zeal and Ardor was also very good.
Chat Pile - God's Country is definitely up there too, but metal purists might get sniffy.
Other highlights include White Ward, Blut Aus Nord and Sigh.

Realised my post read totally wrong - the Goatwhore album was the one they talked about that I'd missed, not my AOTY.
AOTY is probably High Command - Eclipse of the Dual Moons

I'm struggling to think of much from this year. There's been a few disappointments (Kreator, Keldian).
Best would be Blind Guardian or Threshold's albums I think.

Terra Tenebrosa: Supposedly Avant-garde Black Metal. Sounds rather Noise-like. Very dense and distorted.

Apart from Threshold's new album (good shout Rich), I enjoyed the new Borealis, Evergrey, Candlemass, Queensryche, Teramaze and Michael Romeo's (seriously, we need a new Symphony X) albums, but only a bunch of new songs seem to have a lasting impression so far...

JonFE Ah, I forgot about the Michael Romeo album. Only learned about them a few weeks ago. As you say, desperately wanting a new Symphony X album!

Couple of albums that were recommended on Blut Aus Nord's social media. Like both.

Tell you what, that Hath album - And all that was Promised - is really excellent.
It starts off sounding a bit like a less edgelordy Behemoth but damn, that album goes places.
The first few tracks are focused on the heavy but it just gets more varied and interesting as the album goes on. By the end it's more Opeth and (old school) Gojira. Definitely some similarities to Slugdge as well.
Definitely will be going to see them if they tour these shores any time soon, looks like they are rapidly gaining recognition, being Sam Dunn's album of the year is a big deal in my book.

Not sure if anybody is listening to them here, but Ahab apparently release a new album on 13th January.

Akphaezya: Avant-garde/Progressive Metal. That genre description sounds like me waffling on about what genre some weird band is in. If you are not sure just call it Avant-garde and Progressive.

Dying Wish is a new band with a very distinctive mid-2000's metal core sound. There's no rocking the boat with this, you've heard these riffs, you know the structure. But it's delivered with intensity that I found pretty enjoyable. The rest of the 35 min album also similarly brutal.

As you said all been done before, will check out the rest of the album but feel like it's not got a point of difference it needs based off that one song.

New Dawn Ray'd, RABM. it sounds very much like Dawn Ray'd, nothing surprising really, but good. Going to a gig of theirs this year.

Been listening to the latest from Ashenspire lately:
Kinda Deathspeall Omega-y but with overtly leftwing politics. I should like it but I'm finding it grating.

Found out that Mistress uploaded their stuff onto Bandcamp, they're great. Like a sludgier, drunken Anaal Nathrakh. Which isn't surprising given that the members literally are the guys from Anaal Nathrakh, Fukpig, Kroh etc. It doesn't have their final album, but that was released via a different label iirc so it's probably rights issues. The albums are all name your own price too. In Disgust We Trust is a great album. mistressbastards.bandcamp.com/album/in-disgust-we-trust-mix-1

Nothing here you haven't already heard in the field of swirling, dissonant death/black metal but there's just something about the combination of the vocals of T. Kaos and Mark of the Devil that absolutely sends me. MotD's performances are unreal, equalling his work with Cultes des Ghoules (Henbane remains one of my favourite albums of all time; the Spectres over Transylvania EP is even better)

A second new Metallica song. Again the main riff has a real NWOBHM influence to it, or Diamond Head in particular at least. I don’t feel the urge to rush out and buy a new Metallica album but I’m not hating what I’m hearing from it.

I'm not amazed by it, but yeah, I don't hate it.
Part of me likes how unassuming, maybe even lazy it is. Just sounds like some guys jamming out with music they enjoy without trying to prove anything. You really can hear the influence of their known, well, influences.
Whether jamming out is good enough for one of the biggest metal bands in the world is a fair question.

Yeah, it's kinda missing... purpose? Atmosphere? It's just competent, but there's no real vibe from it like the classics.
