Valborg have released a new album: "Der Alte". Looking forward to giving it a listen.
"New" material by Owl as well in the form of "Grid Shimmer", but it's more of a compilation with only two new songs.

Saw Elder + Pallbearer last night. Pallbearer were very much Pallbearer, I enjoy them well enough but struggled to ever actively listen to them. Solid live but not quite the kinda energy I'm looking for.
Elder were aces though, they played a track off Omens too and it sounds *so* much better live, way more energy.

Anyone familiar with White Ward? They make melodic black-ish metal with lots of ambient/noir jazz bits. I came across them as lots of people on the Damnation festival forum were requesting them for next year. As a lover of jazz and metal, these guys are seriously doing it for me. Pretty sure I just heard a sax lead over a melodic black metal breakdown. youtu.be/PXQnEfPRcVU

White Ward are great. Only really got into them this year but they've done some great stuff. Their new album is amongst my faves this year.
There's a few metal bands who is sax. Ihsahn has incorporated sax a fair bit.
Imperial Triumphant are very jazz-metal, their last album even has a Kenny G sax solo.

Listening to Anaal Nathrakh as I'm going to be seeing them (or at least a version of them) in a few weeks.
Love this slightly obscure deepcut from the album Desideratum, starting with a hardcore d-beat that morphs into a Bolt Thrower-esque death metal groove.
(and yeah, I know I've posted them with a high frequency before, and there's a decent chance I'll blather on about them again in the future, but I genuinely think they're one of my favourite bands of all time, which is as much to do with how Dave (and Mick) come across as people as the music)

Have a couple of train journeys today so checking out some albums I have never given proper attention. First up was slayer - hell awaits.
Slayer are one of my most listen to bands on Spotify but that's almost exclusively from reign in blood, south of heaven and seasons in the abyss. Seasons being one of my favourite albums of all time.
Anyway, hell awaits and err yes please. Except for the awful mix/recording from 1985 where I could only make out about 5% of the lyrics it was excellent with so many sexy hard riffs.

Everyone should check out Dream Unending - Songs of Salvation.
It's progressive death-doom, but very melodic and varied. Getting a lot of hype and deservedly so - the whole album is just fantastic and needs to be listened to as a whole. Apparently one of the guys is from Tomb Mold, but the bands are very different.
And yes Hell Awaits is awesome. Especially the song itself!

I'm checking out High Command's new record today. Should be some good thrash in the vein of stuff like Power Trip. youtu.be/rOfUMPQMK6QThere's also a new Elder album which could go either way after Omens.

I saw Spiritworld at Bloodstock this year, they were not at all what I expected from looking at them...
At a quick listen, both High Command and Spirit World scratch a similar itch and both are awesome. But Spiritworld really do the hellish Slayer riffs nicely.

Just listened to it myself. It's okay. It wasn't bad really but didn't make me want to listen to it again.
I'm still listening to megadeth's latest album pretty regularly, about half of it is excellent.

I really don't get Metallica, which is fine because we all like different things, but what's with the utterly sterile production. It's horrific. Is that the norm for them? Maiden are the same. You've got these tunes that should send heavy as all buggery and they sound as flat and clinical as anything. Utter balls. I mean, I presume Trujillo is in that song, and I can see him playing in that video. Can't hear him though.

The production isn't great. I've heard worse but yeah, it's not exactly popping out. The production sounds a bit tired, moreso than the actual song
Kinda wish they'd just employ Andy Sneap, I know he turns up on loads of stuff but his production would suit this kind of stuff really well.
Either that or it needs to be more raw and just play it live. Has a kind of garage band sound so it's be better if it was just more live and scuzzy.
At least it's not brick walled to fuck like Death Magnetic.

It's what's always put me off getting properly into Metallica tbh. I've just found the production on their stuff so lifeless.

It's a real mixed bag production wise.
I think Kill 'em All to Master of Puppets actually have decent production for the time.
Justice for All is crap production wise.
I honestly like the production on Black Album to Reload.
St Anger has those drums, I think that Lars's choice more than Bob Rock's.
Death Magnetic is just compressed awfully. It's actually my least favourite of theirs from a production point of view.
Hardwired production I didn't mind too much.

Relative to their time and sound I’d say Kill ‘em All and Load have the best production. They both certainly have the “right” production for the type of music they contain in a way most, if not all, of the others fail to capture to varying degrees.
A decent live version of any Metallica song is always preferable to the album track I’ve found.
On this new track I’m very pleasantly surprised by the guitars having something of KEA or Diamond Head, maybe Mercyful Fate about them. The influence is definitely there. The drums have something Motorheady going on, but a bit mechanical, sampled almost. What lets it down is the vocals for me, I don’t think Metallica have written a properly memorable hook since something like Four Leaf Clover or even Reload and this doesn’t really change that. Can anyone hear a stadium singing along to this?

After the gig
Was good
What's interesting is, live, Conan are 1/3 hardcore punk. Their fast sections are pure d-beat. Or pure d-beat ran through a scuzzy filter.
I liked it a lot.
Very fun.
I'm too old to mosh like that but I didn't have a conary which I genuinely count as a win.

They were the support when I saw Max & Igor Cavalera’s Beneath The Remains/Arise tour and I thought it was an odd fit until they amped up all that crusty Discharge-y d-beat side of their sound then it made perfect sense

I know its only mobile phone footage from a festival crowd but the first Pantera reunion shows look and sound pretty good. Phil’s obviously a lot less mobile these days but his voice seems to be holding up for now.
Obviously Zakk and Charlie are both safe bets who’ve been playing big shows forever but they really do sound just like Pantera.

Crystal Lake narrowed down auditons to the final 3 to replace their formal vocalist Ryo and you can see each of them performing live with the band here in a final audition. I dont think any of them can compare to Ryo

I think between him and Zakk on stage I wouldn't be able to stomach going to see them. I don't even know what it is about Zakk, he just comes across like a bell-end. Some new interesting stuff from Lykotonon (members of Stormkeep and Blood Incantation). Like a mash-up of those two bands and uh... Rob Zombie? But good. And different.
