I’ve never knowingly heard a Trivium song. I think they supported Maiden at some point, but I don’t think I caught them then.
I might dip into it at some point. I’m spending much more time on classical, blues and folk these days.

Their weaknesses is they're just kinda shapeless? They started out as an ok metal-leaning metalcore band, but got lots of shit as one of the more prominent ones from metal fans who were scared of a repeat of the 90s nu-metal situation repeating itself again. They pivoted to a more trash sound on the Crusade and got shit for being a bit unoriginal and generaly it just sounding too much like a band trying to sound like another band. Then they made Shogun, which was actually very good and the first time they sounded kinda comfortable and like they'd found their niche.
Then for some reason they veered back to metalcore, then changed direction again and did some crap with the wanker from disturbed, then change direction and did a more heavy oriented album, and then changed direction once more to do what they did on Shogun again, which was nice. Then another album that was just a mishmash of their direciton changes all in one, and then this one which is more Shogun.
TL;DR unless you love metalcore just listen to Shogun, Sin and the Sentence and the newest one and ignore the rest. Think the newest one is the weakest of the three though.

Thanks for the potted history I probably won’t go out of my way to chase them up.

Have we done Spectral Wound yet?
Mgla/Sargeist vibes musically, but apparently less fascism. Both of which are good things as far as I'm concerned.

I only came across Spectral Wound over the Christmas break, but it's possibly my fave album of 2021.
Very rich production, musically it's very old school black metal, early Darkthrone type stuff, but with a thicker production. They definitely remind me if Sargeist too, particularly 'Let The Devil In'
I do wish Mgla weren't as good, but I have to admit I still find their music captivating, even if they likely have quite awful personal views. But then we are back to the whole separating the artist from the music thing. It helps a smidge that their lyrics are nihilistic and often speak about the futility and doomed nature of empires, which I think is fundamentally not a nationalistic view.

I'll listen to them when the mood takes me (the music is very good) but I'm not wearing one of their t shirts any time soon.
There are quite a few black metal bands that fulfill that criteria to be fair.

Let The Devil In is one of my all-time favourites so I'll have to check out Spectral Wound. What did you make of the last Mgla album? I couldn't get on with it. The last Kriegsmaschine album was stellar, though.

@goatapocalypse
I thought the last Mgla album was... okay, I listened to it a fair bit but it's definitely not as good as the preceding few albums.
Hope you enjoy Spectral Wound. Just hope I didn't oversell the Sargeist feel!

New Wilderun album today, if you like your Folk/Prog/Death metal it should be a banger.

Man, Ice Nine Kills new stuff is a lot better than I originally gave it credit I think, anyone else into them? Each song is about a different horror movie, this one is Pet Cemetery

Not sure if I like Ice Kills Nine, not quite my bag. The theme of the album is fun though, reminds me of what Make Them Die Slowly did recently, each song based on a different slasher / video nasty type film.

Seems like 2021 was a damn good year for black metal, which hasn't generally been my thing but right now it's giving me the energy I'm not getting elsewhere... Currently loving Wode as well.

ETID have officially broken up in a very shitty way.
That sucks, at least they went out on top musically.

Shame to hear, only started listening with Radical and was listening to then over time. Spent a long time being active it seems, maybe the rest of the band can stay together as something else.

The new Ghost is quite good but it feels like we’re still waiting for the one big hit that will turn them into the festival headliner they could easily be

DISCLAIMER: They may not qualify as 'metal', but I'm going to put the question in this thread anyway. Purists, feel free to yell at me!
Can anyone recommend another band like The Dillinger Escape Plan?
Thanks in advance.

Can anyone recommend another band like The Dillinger Escape Plan? Thanks in advance. There's a fairly new band I'm enjoying who remind me of DEP, Pupil Slicer. I don't think they're exactly the same but they scratch the same itch:

Had a weird urge to listen to Sikth, so had a look at their newer stuff (That's still five years old now)
I liked it.
fun pop fact: one of the singers (the most deranged sounding one) apparently did the voice acting for several characters in Disco Elysium.

I hadn't heard any of their more recent stuff, pretty decent. Techy but also fun and catchy. Definitely some nu-metal/crazy/System/Korn vibes to the vocals but seems self-aware enough to not be cringey. I do remember they first showed up around that late nineties time when Korn were huge (in fact I remember seeing them in a local pub as a scrawny teenager). New Meshuggah track came out Friday and is excellent, but seriously guys sort out the album art - it looks like something Disturbed would put out.

I like Kreator's new single - just straight up, unpretentious and still feels nice in a retro kinda way.
