Given my name and avatar I'd be remiss if I didn't throw this one in, a cover of Grieg's Hall of the Mountain King by Savatage

I like Sepultura's live cover of Firestarter
Better than the shit live version The Smashing Pumpkins did.

This cover of Hurricane, Bob Dylan's Rubin Carter song, by Belgian band New Rising Sun - about whom I know absolutely nothing else.

I loved Chris Cornell's cover of Nothing Compares 2 U when he originally did it (which was before Prince died). When Chris died it kinda got over-played/hyped and took the gloss off a bit for me, but replaying now it's fucking great.

I really like this whole album. If ever there was a band who could handle 16 extra drummers its them.

Another vote for Johnny Cash's version of 'Hurt', which I somehow overlooked in my initial post.
On a related note:
Nine Inch Nails - Dead Souls (original by Joy Division)
Bonus points for being on the soundtrack to The Crow, which is back in the news right now following the tragic Alec Baldwin incident. I loved that movie as an angst-filled teen - hell, I'd probably enjoy it now as an angst-filled [redacted]-something. Did not realise Dead Souls was a cover or I'd have definitely included it. And I must give the Crow soundtrack another listen...

Can't get it on youtube, but Hendrix's cover of Daytripper is amazing As is Otis Redding's! Back in those days there seemed to be a lot more cover versions, everyone covered everyone, you went for a show not just to here originals. But Otis did it so well, the man was explosive.

Maybe a bit predictable but I'm surprised not to see it yet:
Every track on here that isn't by Nirvana (no I'm not picking one, you shut up)

Radiohead - Nobody Does It Better (original by Carly Simon)
Ramones - Surfin' Bird (original by The Trashmen)*
* I was going to post R.A.M.O.N.E.S. instead, but the studio version is muted on YouTube.

Also, always loved Sonic Youth’s foray into Madonna, Robert Palmer covers, sampled by playing a tape recorder into a mic:

Fucking love that Ramones track. I'm not allowed to play it in the house because my GFs surname meant that she was mocked with 'Everybody knows about the Bird' from preschool to this very day

was always partial to Metallica's version of So What, not sure it beats the Anti-Nowhere League original though.

Can't get it on youtube, but Hendrix's cover of Daytripper is amazing Yeah, another good one. What I loved about the 60s is that they all just covered each other, gave songs away and all sorts, all (or mostly) for the love of music. No arguments about royalties etc. Frustrating. Sounds of the 60s with Brian Matthew was brilliant for highlighting this.

Comedy cover with a crap ton of talent I kinda end up preferring over the original (thunderstruck - steve'n'seagulls, original ac/dc)
