The original plan was to just buy a new bike next year.
Though that has somewhat changed now as we have now decided to prioritise a house purchase. Which makes sense because in our current house the bikes live in a somewhat unsecured shed. Would feel a bit silly putting an all singing and all dancing bike into the shed.
So I figured I could put the shiny new bike on the back-burner until we are into our new house, whenever that may be, and get rid of the 'want' for a new bike and just upgrade my current bike. There's nothing wrong with it other than I want electronic gears and a better range for climbing. Turns out 52/36 and 11-30 is too much for these chicken legs.
But the more I look into it, it's not as easy as I thought. Was hoping I could go Shimano as I'm used to it but I don't know how the battery cables would get around the BB as it seems Canyon Ultimates usually put the battery in the downtube.
Lots more to consider than I would've liked
Edit: Starting to feel like the really sensible option is to just have a bit of bloody patience!

Sram may be slightly easier, but sticking in a battery into your seatube and running 2 cables to it isn't that hard (shimano are wireless levers as well now, just the mechs are wired to the battery). You will also need a different freehub for your wheels and different rotors if you go sram. The messiest bit of swapping groupsets is doing the brake lines, but it's all doable with time, and the right tools, and a bunch of youtube videos. Not something I'd do myself as it's not exactly cheap, and the benefit isn't massive, but if you've got 1500 quid to burn and a load of spare time I guess?

Get a nice pair of 55-60mm deep carbon wheels, they’ll genuinely make it feel like it’s flying and you can keep them for the future bike (which will come with slightly shite wheels) too.

What cranks do you have currently, if they’re fairly recent 4 bolt pattern 110BCD shimano cranks then fitting some compact chainrings will be the easiest way to reduce gearing. Upgrading groupsets is the worst value upgrade you can do typically

Well after a night of watching videos. It doesn't look that difficult as long as you have the right tools. Though as mentioned doing the brakes looks like the most fiddly part and easiest to mess up. Basically I need to work out the cost of all the tools and how much I value my patience/time and see if it'd worth doing myself or the LBS. Though if I have the tools I can also do work on my partners bike also. Already have a deep set of carbon wheels for the whooshing noise. Sound cool, look cooler but they didn't make me any faster though! Currently the cranks that came with the bike. 175.2 52/36. Not wanting to go electronic for any other reason other than "huh, that's cool", to look at what gears I use for the first few times, to have some buttons on the hoods but most importantly, because it's something new to play with. I did see the 12speed ultegra on eBay for about £1100 a few weeks ago. I'm going to keep my eye out for a sale and if it happens I'm going to give it a go myself. Worst comes to worse I can just sheepishly visit my LBS and ask them to fix my mess

You can get a (good) bleed kit fairly cheaply from aliexpress- make sure it comes with olives and (ideally) you’ve got the cable cutting/olive installing tool. Its not too hard, basically heating plumbing for bikes.

Green, black makes the braking too sharp.

Well I've got a few weeks to wait yet so I can use that time to acquire some tools and spend lots of time reading and trying to find out if I can route around the BB.
Have boring things like a remortgage and potential house sale to bother with first

Long climbs like in europe or high %? Or both possibly! Up here it's mostly all steepish, but not massively long climbs, which is a shame, wouldn't mind some multiple km long uphill slogs for the fitness challenge like you get in the alps/pyrenees etc.

Can't have one without the other though! I like the mental challenge. Probably due to running. I think it's my favourite thing about endurance sports- lock in and get slogging away until it's done.

Long climbs like in europe or high %? Or both possibly! Both! There’s 3 ~1000m mountains with ski resorts right in the city, typical 4-5% for 15km stuff. Then around town there’s any number of short steep roads, 20% spikes are easy to find. One peaked at 30% yesterday, that was rough

The aptly named 19 Street Coronary segment. Wasn’t sure I’d make it, turned a corner and saw a wall straight up. Had to grind up in 39-25 which was as far as I could clunk down before going full gas

That steep is wheelie time!
I moan about climbing but I kinda enjoy it under my own steam, with other fit bois though I’m doing 350 watts while they’re at 200 something so I’m always mid pack at best. I compete better at flat power and can disengage brain more completely going downhill so swings unt roundabouts, etc

Yeah, that’s ok if you like the bike 👍 Giant makes solid bikes, if lacking in a bit of glamour. But always well made and thought out, and, as long as the condition is good I’d pay that.

A Giant SCR3 was my first road bike, sold it to someone at work. It's still going strong after 20 years.
They're not cool, but they know what they're doing and make decent bikes.

The legend that is Mike Burrows set the template for modern frame design when he did the TCR for Giant

He really did, I remember Armstrong saying something dumb like “I’ll never ride a bike where the top tube doesn’t slope forwards”, in a dumb way, prolly while high

Decided not to get the TCR. Was a 9 speed 2020 and in very good condition. However thought it im going to spend 800 I may as well save a bit more and get something more recent.
Plus I can't keep my eyes off the orbea orca's
Bit of a headache all this (first world problem if there ever was one)

That’s probably a good take. Need to raise the heart rate a bit when you look at a bike
