Finally doing something meaningful about my fitness, starting with losing some weight. Was touching 75kg about 2-3 weeks ago, was bang on 73 this morning and feeling a lot better for it

I just bought myself a new hardtail MTB last month. Been enjoying taking my lad up to the local trails and he is showing me all about it. Went out Sunday, got the think wet and muddy for the first time and now today they rear brake is completely gubbed. I can pedal against the brake and even a slight gradient rolls it with the lever full on.
It fucks me off as I have had bad luck before with brakes and I was reluctant to get a new bike and have to be the mechanic in the house. Now I’m taking pads out and cleaning callipers etc.
Ho hum. Got it booked in for Saturday 😐

Might need the lines bled a bit Hi, I missed this this morning cheers. Reckon it is a bleed that’s needed. I am happy to fiddle about taking the pads out etc but know that I do t have the skills or knowledge to bleed the brakes myself. Also, really worried I’ve fucked them up using a cleaner on the frame. I put the brake disc covers on, and sprayed 2 wee skooshes of water displaced on the crank, facing forward. Paranoid I’ve messed it up though.

Any sort of solvent cleaning spray is best squirted onto a cloth and wiped on, but you’ll probably be ok with what you did. You’ll get howling noises if the pads are contaminated. Sounds to me like it’s probably just a top up of mineral oil in the lines needed, should be a quick job at the LBS

Hoping so!
I cleaned the pads etc with a disc cleaner and there is no honk but still no power. Most annoyed that i'm missing time out with the lad but hopefully Saturday morning will see it fixed.
I hate not knowing how to do everything on my stuff.

And although it's the bike store I bought it from, it's not particularly local - it's in the city and it's in a Low Emission Zone and my car isn't allowed in so I need to park right at the edge of the zone and take the bike in!

Hey bike kids, the chain snapped on my folding bike the other day - can I buy any old chain or does it need to be a certain spec / size? And if it does, how do I go about figuring out what I need?

I’d expect it’s a regular 3/32” chain, but check the manufacturers website for the spec

Bike dropped in this morning. They got back this avo saying it was contaminated pads so they sanded them down and torched the rotor.
It had got a lot better just sitting in the cellar since Monday after I attempted a clean. But I wanted it checked over anyway.

Had a run out on my gravel bike earlier, mostly roads, but out for 37km and it was so nice to have some decent weather and, most importantly, the time to get out for the first time in too long. It was heavenly.
Quads not entirely happy on the last hill, but that was my own fault for a having a 10km run yesterday.
More nice weather at the weekend please weather gods.

Had my last UK ride yesterday, nice easy spin with my regular riding buddy. Spent a good hour trying to figure out the best way to box the bike up last night, hope it survives the trip ok

Wet, hopefully not shit, Vancouver has a few genuine mountains on the doorstep plus a velodrome and some of the best mtb available. Tbf the roads around North London coukd be pretty special, there won’t be many rolling lanes between quaint villages over there

Ace, yeah the riding will be fab over there and genuinely different I’d think 👌

Just covered 200 gravelly, hilly miles across Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire over a very pleasant long weekend. Riding bikes is fun, particularly when there's a sunny beer garden waiting at tge end!

Really tempted to upgrade my bike to electronic gears because why not.
How straight forward would be doing a full groupset for a beginner? Most technical thing I've done so far is remove a cassette or set up tubeless lol.
Am I right in assuming that I could use the same bottom bracket I already have in place? Would be going from R8020 to R8100
Edit: - I think just going SRAM may be easier

Er, yes- that’s quite technical. SRAM a fraction easier iirc because the mechs talk wirelessly so you’re not having to run cables through the frame at least. Your BB width would stay the same- if you’re having tot swap cranks for some reason then the axle thickness may be different- FSA, etc’s 30mm vs Shimano’s 26mm. Should be able to keep the same crank though.
Shirley, selling the bike and putting that and the grandish that the group set would cost together to buy something with it all fitted might be better?
