Had my bike serviced while was away on holiday for a few days.
Finally took it out for a test run earlier and it's running like a dream. Nice.
Nearly got taken out by a driver not seeing i was on a roundabout right in front of them when i was about a km from home mind, but everything else was a fine day.

Nightmare, what's up? Just feeling a bit washed out/overtraining?

Not sure really. Sinusitis or a couple of different bugs back to back since coming out of lockdown. Probably made an error in starting running at the wrong time too

Yeesh. Sinusitis has fucked me right up a couple of times. Was sorely tempted to go all medieval trepanning and get a drill to release the demons at one point. That stemmed from our boy starting at nursery and giving me the worst head cold I have ever had.
For a couple of years after that, *every* cold I got went right for my sinuses. Above the head I can kind of live with, but if it gets into the rea below the eye socket and you get the optic nerve/tooth pain it's maddening.

Oh here it is.
Anyway, new Dura Ace and Ultegra accounced today, both 12 speed & di2 only, so silly money (300+ for the dura-ace cassette!). Rim brake options are still there though, but 105 is the best mechanical Shimano you can get now, feels a bit odd.

Do you ever have days where you go out and you're just fucked from the get go and never stop feeling fucked for the whole ride? What is it the weather or something? I'm halfway round a 30 miler I do all the time and every mile has been an absolute cunt.

Yeah, happens. Can be a sign of overtraining/not getting enough rest, or you’re about to come down with some sort of virus. Often it’s just One Of Those Days, see how you feel tomorrow

My boy has pretty bad cold and he sneezed directly into my open mouth yesterday so it may well be that.

Yep, totally. And sometimes I feel good and am slower, sometimes the legs feel sore from the start and I’m setting best times 🤷♂️ Consistency is the thing, it may feel different but just keep plugging away and, overall, you’ll be getting faster. Saying that, there’s an often repeated phrase in cycling- it never gets easier, you just go faster…

It’s weird that isn’t it, legs feel totally shagged but you’re flying. Best of all when you tell your mate a few times you’ll be going easy as you’re fucked, then you end up sitting on the front and he can’t get past

Fucking gears. The lowest gear was gear was jumping out so I fucked about with the adjustment things following a guide. Now the lowest gear is fine but the highest gear is making a rubbing noise. The derailer looks perfectly in line so what else do I adjust?

What did you do, tighten the cable stops or fiddle with screws on the derailer?

Fiddled with the screws first but the top gear still wouldn't go in. So I loosened the tension thing which sorted it. Loosened it quite a bit.

The steps between lever throws are set in stone at the lever, they’re the precisely correct spacing to move the chain from one cog to the next. The cable tension does one thing only, which is to set where the derailer is - if you’ve got trouble shifting up to a bigger cog, it’s too loose, if it’s not dropping to a smaller cog it’s too tight. The limit screws have no bearing on any of that, they’re just end stops for the extreme ends of the derailer, they stop the chain falling off the end basically.
Usually, if there’s no issue in the middle of a cassette then the limit screws aren’t set properly. Cable tension problems are apparent all over the cassette. You don’t want to make more than 1/4 turn adjustments really, then see where you are. You don’t want the have the limit screws too far out, especially inwards as it could lead to the derailer getting caught in the spokes

What about the 3rd mystery screw which moves the derailer thing higher or lower? Do you need to adjust that after making other adjustments?

Not really, depends on the size of your cassette mostly. Having the upper jockey wheel lifted closer to the cassette usually gives snappier shifting but it’s not mission critical

I'll have another play with the lower adjustment screw thing tomorrow. It looked pretty center to me though.

Derailleurs are a mystery to me. I try and tweak them, but if I can't get it, it's time for a visit to the the bike shop!
Did your horrible ride get any better Decks? Usually once you get going I find it gets better eventually, sometimes after the halfway point. Helps if the weather is nice too!
Sometimes, you're just not feeling it though & nothing is going to help.

I spent hours fucking about with my gears in the summer, couldn't get it right. Turns out they were twisted to fuck, the nice mechanic chap sorted it right out.

Turn the bike upside down and eye the jockey wheel relative to the cogs as you make adjustments- the biggest sprocket on the cassette needs to have the jockey wheel sit precisely cantered when you’ve set the derailleur in that gear. The smallest however needs to have the jockey wheel sit half a mill to one millimetre away from centre and toward the frame.

This explains that babble better, once this alignment is set then it’s a matter of using the barrel adjuster to get it moving up and down as Els described. Sometimes need a quick spin between small adjustments to be sure because the gears behave a tiny bit more hesitant when under tension from actual pedalling.

Yeah cheers. The gears are all working, it's just the rubbing in the highest gear now. I'll have another mess on with it tomorrow.

After more tweaking I've managed to get it so nothing is rubbing but I'm still be having problems with first gear jumping in and out. What should I be looking to adjust without fucking everything up?
