I haven't read the books but I understand he was supposed to be a big guy which made the Cruise movie castings a bit odd.
Well they found a lump, Reacher is swole and the fight choreography is solid. He is a bit of a charisma vacuum but maybe that's the way the character is written.
Suspension of disbelief is required in order for the plot to rocket along but it's entertaining and I chewed through four episodes in one sitting.

Yeh. Looks decent. Big fan of the books. Looks like they've actually cast someone believable in the title role rather than a wimpy dwarf. AKA Tom Cruise. I had the same thought when I saw the adverts. Haven't checked it out yet but it's on my burgeoning watchlist.

I just watched the first episode and they have absolutely NAILED the constant mentioning of how big, butch and manly he is.
He’s in every scene and the only one where they didn’t mention how swole he is was when he gouged a guys eyes out.
Great news for fans of the book and it’s heavy homoeroticism.

"His tanned body was so muscular and tanned after working outside on pools doing manly man manual labour that summer. His torso looked like a condom crammed full of walnuts."
They're such easy books to read, but some of the shit he dribbles out is laughable. I'm tempted to go back and check how accurate my made up quote above actually is.

I haven’t read any of the books, but after watching some of this, does this Reacher guy have any character / personality that stretches beyond being a brooding hunk of a man that is perfect at everything? I feel this could get a bit tired otherwise.

Also, Amazon need to sort their picture quality out. This is second Prime series in a row I’ve watched with weird grainy colours. Budget.

I think the books are fine in a "you know what you're getting" kind of way. Imo that makes them pretty ideal for a streaming adaptation, in those cases that you want something that's just reliably entertaining.

They are very one note but sometimes that's what you want. I've read a few and enjoyed them, but not enough to read every one.

What's with the adverts on half the stuff now? Isn't that just the imdb TV stuff? Does that still have ads even if you're a prime member? It's good for me because I'm not currently a Prime member, but I can still watch imdbTV shows and movies, and they don't *seem* to have too many ads. I didn't find that many shows I really liked on Prime though. Tumbleleaf is good if you have kids. The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is a lot better than you'd expect, though it took 2-3 episodes for me to get it. Into the Badlands has some ace fight choreography, but somehow isn't as good as it probably should be. It's fun enough though. Babylon 5 is free on imdbTV.

As I progress through Reacher I find his deductive skills more and more preposterous. As well as everyones weird acquiescence to his demands and questions. He's a weird muscular stranger not any kind of law enforcement you don't have to obey his angry commands.
Aha! A shell casing with red dust, the kind of dust you only find in Mexico in November. The festival of the dead is held in November. A festival that's recognised by UNESCO. An organisation that seeks to build peace through international cooperation. Another word for cooperation is collaboration. John Lennon and Paul McCartney are famous for their collaboration. Their band? The beetles. Beetle in Spanish is escarabajo. Escarabajo is the name of a Mexican cartel. I think we're on to something big here.

Haha, it’s ridiculous isn’t it. It also removes any sense of mystery, as the moment something happens you know he’ll rock up and have it fully resolved within 3 minutes.

I'm enjoying Reacher and so far it's proving very binge watchable. I find myself agreeing with some of the reviews that have pointed out that the flaw at the heart of this as a TV series is Reacher himself: he always deduces the solution right away, he's always right, he never loses, he's never scared. The supporting characters have to carry a lot more weight than in the books to provide some dramatic tension. Rather like the books it's very well crafted escapism though.

Well I've watched the whole thing and loved it, not read the books so that's not a factor.
As for Reacher being right instantly, well there's something he's gets completely wrong which is a huge plot point but I'll not say for spoiler reasons.

Books are alright; they’re of a level whereby you can breeze through the story and it’s very easy going. As you get a few books in the Reacher Is Right rule disappears and he gets things wrong too. You can only do the stranger walking into a town so many times before you have to change it about a bit.
Think Clive Cussler’s Dirk Pitt novels. Fun to read, a bit daft, but entertaining and then instantly forgotten.

Reacher was shot in the chest in Tripwire but survived thanks to the increased muscle mass he’d gained from road building. I’m here for that type of content.

I really enjoyed it, it kept the investigation and surprises going fairly well for most part. I do agree that the deductive reasoning got a bit blasé towards the end, and I though last episode or so was probably the weakest. I look forward to the next 19 series

I'm not a Jack Reacher fan at all, which is why I probably enjoyed the Cruise films (well, the first one, the second is very mediocre). I thought this was okay for the first few episodes but then it became mediocre very very quickly. The meathead guy they've got as Reacher is incredibly one note, but I know nothing about the books, he could be spot on. The baddies were very dull and eventually had none of the threat the overly graphic crime scenes initially promised. Say what you want about the Cruise films, but Werner Herzog was genuinely terrifying in the first one. in this it was some kids, a few faceless Venezuelans and Foghorn Leghorn

I think it was two episodes too long. There were people being killed off simple to fill episodes.

It was so much better than the Cruise films and while the baddies were bit one note the rest of it and the action was really enjoyable.
Even by the last episode everyone is still talking about how jacked he is lol.

The first Cruise film I found highly enjoyable, helped in no small part by having Herzog as the baddie
