Prime also has a lot of movies with no subtitles at all, which is inexcusable in this day and age. Japan Prime is even worse for this. I had a cunning plan to practice my language skills by watching Japanese content with Japanese subtitles but hardly anything has them. Impressively, I Googled for Japanese content on Amazon Prime with subtitles and the next time I went on Prime it had added a category rail 'content with Japanese subtitles' but still most of it didn't have any subtitles それは謎ですよね。

Prime's eagerness to show video quickly rather than at a decent bitrate is fucking annoying, I end up pausing some videos just to allow it to get a buffer at times, I'd rather have a buffering spinner than 480p (at best) video for 20 seconds or so. It's certainly not my connection doing it either. I watched a bunch of 80s and 90s movies on Prime, some stuff even older but have found that some of the "prints" they're working from look like they're dubbed from pirate VHS tapes. eg "Captain Kronos, Vampire Hunter" is unwatchable, so is "Quest For Fire". Some of the stuff is fine but...

I daresay I'll just carry on watching with Ads I don't watch that much anyway but I do like the convenience and ease of use of Amazon and their returns process. Hands down better than any other online retailer ever by a mile. ...I've had Prime since it came out in the UK, 2007 according to Google but I cancelled. I actually quite enjoyed Prime Video for the obscure stuff you'll never find on Netflix. Dodgy old English softcore comedies etc., Sci Fi and Horror B movies. But enough is enough. Since I quit I still haven't had to fork out a fiver for delivery because I haven't really needed anything in a hurry. I stick stuff I want on a Wishlist then when I have £25 of it I order it, or sometimes I take stuff off the list because the notion has passed, whereas I probably would have just ordered it on impulse before. Hasn't affected my returns at all either, still free via Evri at a Parcelshop location.

Just finished watching The Power. It was good, hope they renew it. Might have to pop over to z-lib as well.

I'm fast going off all the sub services. Disney is toss for content really, netflix is getting progressively more expensive, Paramount's TV app is dogshit (came free with sky cinema but I've kicked that to the kerb) and now Amazon (as of today on my app) are asking for 2.99 a month to keep everything ad free.
They're all cunts.

Take the £10 to £30 a month you were spending on streaming services and use it to fill out a Bluray/UHD collection of your favourite films and shows that you'll actually watch and will own forever.
For the odds and sods worth watching on the streaming services then sub to them for 8 weeks of the year rather than 52 weeks or as minimum make them half price by doing one month on/one month off.

I share my streaming services but I might just move to whacking stuff on a hard drive, like the old days. Just getting silly now.

This doesn’t really work though unless you hardly watch anything as the cost is so much more + the impracticality and inconvenience on top, plus a lot of stuff is never on physical media. The reality for me is I don’t care about the physical versions any more. The chance of me watching it again in 5-10 years is low enough that it’s not a problem I think about + anything good will still be streamable. So far with the new ad supported Amazon I’ve seen 1 30 second advert.

Yeah I've had a minute of ads before and 1 40 second during.
But, this is how it starts

I've only watched one thing (Bottoms) since they brought in the ads and I didn't get any. The main effect it's had so far is to make me think about how little I actually use Prime for anything now.

No one should look into Real Debrid, because although it's easy to set up it could potentially be misused.

The constant reduction in value for money is really getting depressing.
Frankly modern codecs and encoding hardware should be lowering infrastructure costs for the steaming providers. It's not like most are demanding 8K 12bit streams. We've already reached the point of diminishing returns in terms of resolution and bit depth so these costs should be coming down or at the very less staying consistent/tracking inflation.

If people pay this, I'm sure it'll be 4.99 before you know it.
Wonder what's next, a 4k tier, colour?

This is absolutely where we see streaming start to collapse. I'm quite happy without Netflix and can always find background noise if I want it.

Streaming isn't going to collapse at all.

This is absolutely where we see streaming start to collapse. Why? Most people won't be cancelling their subs and the content that people generally want isn't going anywhere.

Well none seem to be actually doing "well". Amazon is just a bolt on to the delivery business and Disney look to be fannying around because they're making stuff for silly money that isn't pulling in the numbers.
At some point, one of them will drastically reduce output or be the first to merge.

There was an article recently that the ad-supported versions seem to be pretty popular. Growing more than the non-ad ones iirc.

the ads I could live with, but this has annoyed me enough to want to bin Amazon Prime when my annual sub next comes round.

Crash mentioned it above and I can actually see 4k being the next thing hidden behind another pay wall.

Netflix hide 4K already. They all just want to get to £20pcm for their service. At which point it's back to cable/ Sky.
Better start making good use of iplayer, then.
